"Then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in" are the words the wolf spoke in the classic fairy tale of "The Three Little Pigs." You'll recall that the pigs constructed their houses of straw, sticks or bricks. In late March 2024, a devastating ice and wind storm hit the Albany, N.Y. area, and you would think our home was made of sticks, by viewing the 18 substantial trees and limbs that littered our lawn at our East Greenbush home. I called Kayra's Landscaping & Tree Service in Albany (518) 256-7547), and reached the owner, Anthony Ward. He said he could stop by the next day and provide an estimate. He arrived promptly, as promised, and we walked our property together, observing the 18 trees and limbs, which I had marked with high-visibility tape, and numbered. This made it easy for him to provide an accurate estimate and insured we were in total agreement about the scope of work. We agreed upon a fair price, and Anthony said he and his two-person crew could begin immediately, which was a pleasant surprise. Anthony communicated clearly as to how he would conduct his work to avoid damaging our lawn. I suggested that he could bring his light-weight truck and chipper to our backyard, which greatly increased the efficiency of his team. Anthony and his crew removed the trees and chipped debris without damaging our property or other trees. And, they even raked stray branches, leaving our lawn in a better condition than when they first arrived! They were totally professional, and completed all their work in one day. I left a voice mail for Kayra's Tree Service. Anthony contacted me to do an estimate. He did the estimate and then called to let me know the cost was $2600. I told him I was waiting for some other estimates. On 10/4 he texted me and asked me when he could take down my tree. I said I had one more I was waiting for. Then I said if you can do it for $2400 I won't even wait. He came back with $2500. I said okay give me a date and time. He said he would get back to me in a few days. I didn't hear from him at all. I reached out to him on 10/7 he texted back on 10/9 and asked if he could take a few panels out of my fence to get his equipment closer to the tree. I said absolutely you can! He said ok give me a day or so and I will contact you with time and date. 10/12 I texted and asked the status. 10/15 He said he was picking up the crane tomorrow and he was thinking 10/19 or 10/20, I will contact you tomorrow for sure with date. I did not hear from him, I texted him on the 10/17 and he now said 10/20 or 10/23 . He asked my full name and email address so he could send me the certificate of insurance. Finally we are getting somewhere. I gave him the information. He said he would definitely call me on Friday to let me know which day. I asked him to call early in the day, so my neighbor could let his employer know if he would not be in work. He agreed he would. He had already taken one day off because of this fiasco. He is kindly paying 1/2 of the cost of the tree because it hangs over his lawn and leaves whirlybirds and leaves on his lawn. He never called/texted the entire weekend. I texted him to let him know to forget it, but since I got his name from the BBB I would be making them aware of this. All of the sudden I get a text that he had a family emergency, that is why I did not hear from him. He said I want to take down your tree, give me another chance. By this time I knew he wasn't going to take it down. He asked if he could come out and look at the job again. I agreed but told him he was not going to change the estimate. He sent me another text later in the day on 10/23 and said something would have to be left behind? I asked what he meant by that. He said he was going to have to leave wood behind. He claimed he would pick it up at a later date. I told him after all this that I did not trust him to come back for the wood. He responded that it was a 3 day job. I said and at the end of the 3 day job the wood would need to be gone. I told him I would be using someone else and that he had a lot to learn about running a business among other things! I wasted the entire month of October on this business. As I read it back I feel so stupid that I let it go on for so long. I am a senior, but I had my neighbor involved, I hoped that would help. Luckily I did not give him any money. I hate to think of how long this would have gone on and what would have been next. I have text messages from the business that prove the day by day interactions. Do yourself a favor and stay away from Kayra's Tree Service. They are nothing but a joke, they will not ever get the job done. I always give people the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully I learned my lesson this time. I hate that it is mandatory to give a star rating. I would honestly give a 1/2 a star for coming out to do the initial estimate. read more
