Sharing a space with an architectural firm, what you see when you first walk in, is what you get. There's not aisles and aisles of books, but that's what makes it easy to spend some time looking. The children and young adult section is a decent size, surprisingly, so it will give the kids something to do while you spend time looking. Mostly current authors, and a fair mix of biographical, non-fiction and informational, So & So does its job -- offering something different when time and boredom with the common stuff can make book shopping a chore. None of that is an issue here.

But I really love using their website...in my experience, ALL of the books in store are on the website. My sister and I differ greatly in that respect...she loves the in person sales and just likes to browse and find hidden treasure. I go by reviews and recommendations so searching and buying online is so much easier for me. You can only pick up your purchases at certain times and days of the week, so definitely check their website for details. All of the volunteers (?) I've interacted with have been absolutely lovely. They're so kind and knowledgeable. And if they don't know, they will find out. Last time I I got home after picking up an order, I realized that one of the books they've given me was wrong. I emailed them and they replied told to just keep the book and refunded me my money. I went today to pick up another order and the book that they were supposed to give me last time was there! No charge! That is some excellent customer service. I've been pleasantly surprised at some of books I've found. Most if not all have been in excellent condition. I'm so thrilled to support them especially since they support our library!!!

And thus downtown Hillsborough is indeed complete thanks to Purple Crow Books. It is a small, cozy bookshop that carries all your favorite big name authors, bestsellers, and featured book club works as well. But what clearly sets this establishment apart is the VAST selection of works by Hillsborough authors! Who knew so many published authors hail from this small North Carolina town? This guy surely did not, but I was very impressed and charmed by this fact. There is also a separate section devoted to North Carolina authors (hello, Nicholas Sparks!). You gotta love the strong local representation! Off the side of the main room, there are two smaller sections, one of which showcases numerous gently used books for 50% off and the second of which is devoted to children's books and games. Plus there are some crafty greeting cards for sale as well. All in all, definitely worth checking out as you stroll through Hillsborough. Shelves are kept clean and it's easy to look through everything without any messes or clutter. Everything from Pops to stuffies to games and more. I liked the unique metal puzzles they had as well.
