To share, we ordered the chicken curry nasi lemak, sayap ayam pedas, and kaya toast. All three dishes were phenomenal, each with its own distinct flavor. Came here because our friend visiting knew about all of the trendy places. We were able to get some relatively easy street parking on a Friday night and we had a reservation (though they weren't that busy/not sure if it was really needed). This seems like a fusion place based on staff and vibes. While we ordered a lot of different dishes, I was a little disappointed overall. I had a nice non-alcoholic mixed drink and that was the most refreshing part of the meal. We had a roti jala with chicken curry, nasi goreng (a fried rice with fried egg dish) with prawns, a nasi lemak with rendang beef and coconut rice dish and a laksa remak dish with tofu and prawns. Tip was already included. I did enjoy the flavor of the chicken curry and the beef goreng, but overall the food was just OK. My friends wanted to go out to dinner and one of them wanted to go here. I've never heard of this place and I'm not too familiar with Malaysian food. I've only had it once before and I really enjoyed it, so I was looking forward to this place. Getting there: The drive wasn't too bad coming from Tacoma on a Friday afternoon. It's located by a few notable restaurants. Pretty popular area for food in Capitol Hill. But of course with these places in Capitol Hill, parking is horrible. Street parking does exist but it's extremely limited. There is a pair parking lot behind the building, it's about $30. One of my friends is pregnant and I'm not gonna make her walk too far. Ambiance: Upon arrival, you would've never guessed this place was there. It didn't seem like a restaurant and I would easily miss it. Once inside it seems a bit dark inside at first, but your eyes will adjust. They use mostly natural lighting and some overhead lights. There was seating for about 40-50 people. The tables weren't that big and they added a bit if intimacy. Good vibes for a simple date. Service: It wasn't too busy when my group arrived, but we were seated immediately. They do accept reservations. Our server was very friendly and she was quick. She gave us menus, took our orders, and brought us our food in a very timely manner. And as soon as we were finished, she was ready to take all the dishes away. She was really on top of it. Food: We all decided to eat our food family-style. One of us was participating in lent, so we most of us decided to keep it either vegetarian or seafood. My first thoughts were that the food all looked absolutely amazing! We had a beautiful spread and a great variety of dishes. We had nasi lemak, nasi goreng kampung, mushroom pan mee, chicken satay, and roti jala. We started with the roti jala with chickpea curry and chicken satay. The roti was a bit underwhelming but the curry was good. I never had Malaysian roti before, but it was light in flavor and a bit too soft for me. The curry went well with it. The chicken satay was also alright. I didn't the sauce didn't really stand out too much either. The mushroom pan mee is where things started to change. For having no meat, this dish was surprisingly good. The anchovies, fried shallots, and sambal added all sorts of flavor. The greens added some freshness and the poached egg added some creaminess. There was a lot going on but it went well together. Although I would've liked a little bit more sambal, but my friends already thought it was spicy. Maybe I just missed it in my bites. Next comes the nasi lemak, Malaysia's national dish. I really enjoyed this dish. We chose to have it with chickpea curry again, but this one was slightly different from earlier for some reason. It was a little thicker and deeper in flavor. It was really good with the coconut rice, anchovies, and roasted peanuts. I don't even like peanuts, but these were amazing. It was crispy, but not crunchy. It added a really nice texture that completed the dish. The star of the show was the nasi goreng kampung with prawns. This was like the final boss combining flavors from their nasi lemak and their pan mee. All the best parts of each dish, but they added Thai chili and we added prawns to it. I think what I enjoyed most was the spice. It added the depth and complexity to the dish I was missing from the others. I also couldn't get enough of the sambal and I had to add it with every bite. This dish was absolutely delicious and everything I wanted out of my whole experience. I'd definitely get this dish again and again. Final thoughts: Overall, I had a great experience. This place has really open the doors for me in terms of Malaysian food and I'd love to come back. The laksa is really good, and a great option for vegetarians. I personally like the nasi lemak, but just be careful not to add all of the chilis they provide you, as that can really overwhelm the flavor of the dish. The nasi biryani is good -- the beef rendang is wonderfully flavorful but not the most tender rendang I've had. Portions are satisfying, thankfully, since all the entrees are about $20 and up. We did get to try a couple appetizers, including the nuts and the shrimp chips. The shrimp chips came with a tasty dip and were kind of like eating chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant. I would pass on the peanuts next time just because I didn't like the fishy taste of them. My friends loved the sugar plumerita and ordered seconds. The roti was great, I definitely enjoyed the curry - highly recommend you get that. I had the nasi lemak and I can say that it was good as the combination of flavors were present. This is one of my family's (5 people) favorite restaurants! We have gone here multiple times now and love everything we get. We typically get 2 sides and 3 mains, and it has been the perfect amount of food for all of us. Some of our favorites are the Nasi Lemka with chicken, Malaysia's national dish, which is full of flavor and has a unique flavor profile. Another favorite is always the Laksa Lemak, which is a delicious, rich noodle soup that has a thick, almost peanut like broth and is also full of flavor. We've been here previously with another couple, this afternoon as guests of the good doctor Nyan and his lovely wife, Thanda. I'm told this is actually a representative locale for Burmese fare. It was unfortunate that they only have one server on a Sunday afternoon, but he did very well, managing to be attentive and polite. More than I probably would have. Still, it's very romantic and cozy with dim lighting and modest noise. The place is filled with paper lanterns and lovely colours I immediately noticed the portions being smaller than a few months ago. Something that was echoed by both drs and Mrs. E. The food has been delicious both times. I previously ate the Chili Pan Mee, which was superb, this time out it was the Mushroom Pan Mee which was even better. Many of their creations are either very sweet or hot with heavy curry. Always ask your server if you're not certain what to order. They don't want to return something, uneaten, back to the kitchen just as badly as you don't want to send it back! Most importantly, make a reservation. Especially for dinner or other peak times. We didn't really know what to expect, but the menu is quite simple - drinks on one side, food on the other. Between the two of us, we ordered kaya toast (meh, it wasn't toasted and the poached egg was overcooked yet cold?), Laksa Lemak, and Rusuk Kedai (peanut allergy is a bit limiting here). Honestly, neither of the dishes were memorable. It was definitely less good than it was under previous ownership. Parking is a bit of a mess in cap hill - we parked in the Ramie building since street parking is more expensive. Bathrooms are two single-stall all-gender bathrooms. I came here a few weeks ago for dinner on a weekend evening, and it was a great experience! The food was all so good, and my favorites were the laksa and wings because they both had a great amount of flavor, and the wings were nice and juicy. If you want to use the QR code on the table to pay the bill, there is a 2% platform charge. Here is my bizarre experience with them: When I realized that using the QR code on the table to pay came with a 2% extra charge, I decided to settle my bill with the hostess/waitress (I'm very glad that's an option). When she went over my bill with me, she verified our order one by one verbally. However, without skipping a beat, she clicked next on the handheld terminal and the screen jumped to the grand total. I didn't get to see how my bill became $67 from a beer of $6, a $20 dish, and another $20 dish with $1 extra for prawns. I asked to see the breakdown of my bill as I tapped my phone for payment. The hostess/waitress became very defensive all of a sudden. She said, "You need to sign now, I can't show you the breakdown before you sign." I didn't expect her to react this way since I was only asking to see the breakdown of the bill and I had already tapped so I froze and did not sign my name on the screen right away. She then said to me, "It's okay if you don't sign, you've already paid. You pay when you tap." I told her, " I don't want to make a fuss about the bill, I just want to see the breakdown." She then raised her voice and said, "There is a 18% service charge, we post a sign on the door, and we print it on the menu!" Honestly, I felt really bad for the waitress. Her demeanor felt like trauma response to me. She was very defensive and frazzled when the bill was questioned. I bet she had to answer many patrons about the bill all the time. Her defensiveness soured the whole experience. They didn't present a printed version of the bill, they held the terminal and only showed it to you briefly, they only verbally confirmed the order with you and not wanting you to see the sub total, the added 18%, and the tax. Also, their payment system asks you for additional tip (when the sign on the door says "Tips are not accepted") It was a bad ending to an otherwise decent dining experience. read more

Fast and friendly, Kedai Makan offers the kind of cuisine that I haven't really had since I lived in the southern hemisphere. From lacy rotis to beef rendangs, to the magnificent presence of sambal in many dishes, this is about as authentic a Malayan meal as I have had in over a decade. The place is of reasonable proportions, and despite the size of the space, it manages to create a fair degree of intimacy for diners. The menu is blessedly varied, if not enormous. Both classic southeastern Asian dishes and slight variations thereof are present, but the food offerings are limited to a single page. They also offer a number of alcoholic and non-alcoholic potables, including several signature cocktails (I recommend the lime leaf gin and tonic). The staff are very friendly and efficient. Ordering is quick and, at least for us, dishes arrive with equal celerity. Better still, the food itself is indeed good. The rice and noodle dishes are all first rate; the pork spare ribs I could make a meal by itself. Many of the dishes are also of fairly large. It is not uncommon I think to leave with doggy bags. KM also offers what is starting to become a trend in restauranting: the service charge included in the price of the dishes and refusing tips. Admittedly this is a bit of mental jiu-jitsu, but there is something to be said for not having to agonize about what to leave at the end of a meal. And despite that inclusion, prices at Kedai Makan are pretty reasonable. This alone makes it an attractive option in the Capitol Hill area. Highly recommended. read more

The nasi goreng was so delicious and drizzling the sweet chili sauce over gives it a greater depth of flavor! Very flavorful and i'd order this again if i came back. The chili pan mee was also pretty good. There's a lot of stuff going on in the bowl but that gives it so much texture and flavor, especially with the pork and anchovies. I also tried the laksa which might be a little too sweet for me because of the coconut. The chicken wings were also pretty good -- crispy and tender. Love the peanuts and sesame that came with it for the extra crunch! The interior is nicely decorated and service was quick! Our food came out all together which is nice for a party of 5. Never had Malaysian food before but it was very very good. If you like both Vietnamese and Indian cuisine I think you would like this as well. We ordered Nasi Lemak which was the national dish. The chickpea curry that comes with it was delicious and everyone's favorite. It was made with a tea infused tofu that was subtle but really nice and some coconut rice. We also got the chili pan mi which was also good. Noodles on the bottom, mix together the soft boiled egg, veg, pork, and sambal. We also got an appetizer kerabu timun nanas which was a pineapple and cucumber salad in a flavorful savory sauce. Recommend all of the above! Food came out extremely fast, like the appetizer came out within minutes. Service was so/so. They didn't bring out more water even after it had been empty for a long time. Drinks we paid for were not worth it. Limes for the dishes were super dried out but they were able to bring us more when we asked! Overall food 4.5/5. Came by with a friend for a weekend dinner and was VERY full by the end of our meal. We made a reservation in advance and glad we did because this spot seems to fill up; the interior was, however, larger than I thought it was from the outside. We were seated right on time and service was friendly without being too pushy. I do appreciate the menu for being very vegetarian and vegan friendly and when we ordered, our server did ask if I had a seafood or shrimp allergy or if I had dietary preferences for why I was ordering something with a vegetarian preference. My friend and I shared the roti jala with chickpea curry; def savory and good, but larger than we'd anticipated after a day of food and desserts. The mains are not small by any means either and could honestly be shared rather easily. I grabbed the laksa, vegetarian, and it was a heaping bowl with tons of toppings and flavor. Tasty, but would love to try a rice dish next time. They were out of the beef rendang so my friend had the nasi lemak with chicken instead. She enjoyed it but did note that some of the sides were somewhat bitter? We didn't try the drinks but the cocktail menu and the N/A menu both looked interesting!
