This was a happy find. It seemed that most people came in for Da Pua'a Meet the Poke Nachos. Kalua pig on one side and poke on the other, all on top of fried won ton skins. SO YUMMY! My friends and I came in around 6:30 for dinner and it was pretty busy. Luckily, there was an available table for us. There seems to be only one aunty running the front so if you wait for aunty to take your order, you might be waiting a while. However, there is a QR code on each table which you can use to order if aunty is too busy to come around to take orders. We ordered the pua'a to da poke nachos (nachos with kamakaze ahi and kalua pork), the smoked meat, and the pastele stew. There was so much food in the containers! The nachos were SO YUMMY! The fish was so fresh and the kalua pork was so smoky and the fried wonton chips were flaky and crispy. We devoured the nachos and as soon as it was gone, I wished it was back in front of me. There is chili pepper water along with shoyu on each of the tables. I didn't try it, but my friend said the chili pepper water with the smoked meat was the perfect bite with the rice. If you get a combo plate, you get to choose sides. We got choose a side for the smoked meat and chose the potato salad instead of the haupia. It was a mistake. My Local Girl with ribs also came with ribs, rice, Mac salad and Kalua pork. Menu said two pieces of pulehu ribs but came as cut up pieces of beef on bone about 1& 2 inch pieces mostly bone. Heavily seasoned with Hawaiian salt and sweet. In my mind it was going to be like bbq ribs/ 2 long pieces of bone. Kehau brought out utensils, pitcher of water, took the order, brought it out and was also the cashier- hard working wahine(lady.) It felt more like a neighborhood spot than a touristy restaurant, which I appreciated. We had the poke nachos, ribs, and laulau. The poke nachos were really good and probably my favorite thing we ordered. Fresh poke with crispy chips and a good mix of flavors. The ribs were tender and flavorful, and the laulau tasted homemade and comforting. Portions were solid too. Service was great the whole time. We stopped by around 12:30 p.m. on a Tuesday, and the place was definitely busy. When we arrived, we were told they were only offering takeout due to the lunch rush, but after a short wait, a table opened up and we were able to dine in. They seemed a bit short-staffed during our visit, with just one server and one chef managing the crowd, but they handled everything as smoothly as possible. We ordered the Pua'a to the Poke Nachos, and it was easily a 10/10. Nachos were really crunchy, and had a bit of sweetness. Mixed bag at this restaurant. My real rating would be 3.5 stars if we could give half stars. I had tried calling before we came in to be sure they were open but no answer. Took a chance any way. Server greets everyone who comes in. Too much work for only one server, hard to get taken care of. Looked at the online menu since the server didn't bring us a menu and we were waiting, but it doesn't list the squid luau combo so we had to wait for the server to take our order. She did take care of us before the walk ins that were ordering take out, and we appreciated that. However, turned out squid luau combo wasn't listed online because they were out. Boo. So hubby and I ordered the laulau combo consisting of a nice sized laulau that was tasty, with a nice ratio of pork to leaves, very large scoop of rice, some lomi salmon that was mostly onions that were quite strong and bitter and almost no salmon, pulehu chicken, which was tasty and had a nice char, and haupia, which was good. So food was fifty/fifty. Hubby ordered a coke, which was bottled Mexican (means real cane sugar) which was yummy. They serve Mexican food so I guess they have other Mexican sodas, but I didn't bother to check the menu. We had to ask for water three times because the server was so busy. We had a lot left over since the portions are big. Not sure if we will be back, though. While the server was nice and trying hard to take care of everyone, having to wait to order (another family even came up to ask is they could order after waiting for awhile) and then having to ask for water three times is a turn off for us. The portions were MASSIVE! We ordered the lau lau combo, shoyu chicken and smoked meat as a side order. I am pretty sure I got more than 8 oz of smoked meat. I think what is unique about this place is how they serve their shoyu chicken. It's three generously sized filets that are boneless and skinless and drenched in a thick sauce. As a sauce girl, I wholeheartedly approve. There is always never enough sauce for me and this was a pleasant surprise. The smoked meat was so tasty and I was super sad I couldn't take it with me on the plane. My husband devoured his laulau and mentioned how creamy the haupia was. Overall, a solid plate lunch place with great food and generous portions. All the food is served in takeout containers which is honestly pretty convenient since I always end up taking home food anyways. (We live far so by the time he got home with the food they were closed.) -Lastly, and this one hurts the most because I LOVE chicken long rice; soupy, "dry" style, I'm down.. but this was the WORST chicken long rice I've ever eaten. It had ZERO flavor... how do you even do that? Like the long rice was boiled in plain water and then added straight to the container. On the wall, there is a photo of the owner at the fish market which explains the freshness of the fish. Cashier Gloria was very rude. We came in like a little after ten, and she said, "we aren't open, maybe at 11." Came in five minutes before 11, people were seated and already eating. It's been a while since I've been to Kehau's kitchen. A lot of things on the menu have changed. It offers an array of both Hawaiian and Mexican food. The menu is pretty split and the prices correlate with what you're paying for. We chose to get the lau lau plate with the pulehu chicken and a side order of squid Luau. The lau lau was a bit small but the meat was moist, not a lot of Luau leaf (bummer because that's my favorite part ). The chicken was a little bit undercooked towards the middle and a little too charred for my liking. Lomi salmon did not have salmon inside and it was too small a portion to compliment the whole plate. As for the squid luau, it was really a bright green and very liquidy. I was skeptical when I first walked in. It's a tight space, hole in the wall next to one of the more famous restaurants KimChee 7.
