Went to hike with friends after school. We got scavenger hunt maps which was neat for the kids to search for to cross off. We were able to see several birds and learn about them. Birds journeys that led them to be at the sanctuary. Usually you get to feed them but not today since they had a flu going around. Nice paved paths to walk on for strollers and wagons. Bathroom area to use if you need to go. Swans are so much bigger in up close viewing. read more

This is a wonderful place to see so many birds. It is usually not as crowded as some of the larger zoos in the area. Which adds to the enjoyment in my opinion. The whole sanctuary is a great place for singles, couples, families and anyone who enjoys wildlife. Young kids get a thrill out of seeing the birds. And in non COVID times can feed them too. Adding to children's enjoyment. There are some birds in captivity (usually rehabbed animals) which are common in Michigan. Then the lake and ponds are great places to see waterfowl in their natural habitat. This is a treasure in Kalamazoo county. And a place not to be missed. read more

If you happen to be reading this review today, Earth Day, you're in luck because the Kellogg bird sanctuary is free to enter on Earth Day. This place had been on my birding bucket list for quite some time when my husband and I finally got a chance to go recently. I'd seen many of my birder friends post photos of some rarely spotted gems from here, so I think my expectations were a little higher than my experience, but overall this is a super spot. You can hike around the lake, it's about a mile, or you can stick to the pads closer to the entry points and still see the majority of the bird since most stick close to the entrance since that's where the free food comes from. We did spot a sandhill crane on our hike around the late but other than that didn't see anything on that hike that we didn't see up front, but we are hikers so we enjoyed the walk. When I say 'we' spotted a sandhill crane, I should specify that my husband spotted the sandhill crane and I saw a rock. He was pointing out to me and I'm like: Is it in front of or past the big rock? And he's like: 'Beth ... it is the rock.' Seriously, lying down, they look like a big rock. Well spotted, Andrew! We wished the rescued Birds had a little more space in their enclosures ... It feels like there's enough land here that they could make larger homes so the birds that can fly little bit could do some flying. There are a wide variety of swans and ducks in the large lake and smaller pond area. Most people won't otherwise have an opportunity how to spot a black swan in the wild unless they take a very long vacation. It's an exciting time of year to visit as some of the birds are already laying eggs come on and it's fun to watch them fuss over them. read more

Great for taking the kids out for a fun afternoon, or just for taking a scenic walk. Wasn't able to do the longer hike the last visit due to the weather, but previous have done it and it's a nice walk with great scenery. My niece and nephew love it here, be sure to get a bucket of corn from the desk at the front before going out if you have kids with you. It was cheap and they give you a lot. read more

Great place to take a nature walk with friends or family. The walking paths are nicely groomed / cleaned. It great that a bucket of corn is available (for $1) to treat the birds. The Kellogg Bird Sanctuary in Augusta, Michigan is a great excursion for nature lovers. The Sanctuary, which also serves as a biological station, is located at: 12685 East C Avenue in Augusta, Michigan, just a 20 to 25 minute drive from Battle Creek. It is a wonderful place to bring your binoculars and camera! There are several waterfowl that make their home at the 'Winter Green' Lake, which adjoins the grounds of the Sanctuary. Throughout the year the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary hosts bird walks they call 'Birds & Beans' where you can walk with a guide around the Sanctuary, and enjoy a cup of organic coffee at the conclusion made from beans grown right there! There is also field ornithology courses held right at the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, so students and bird lovers can learn from experts about the lives of our feathered friends. The Kellogg Bird Sanctuary also has a special exhibit of eagles, hawks and owls that were found wounded or injured in the wild, and they now make the Sanctuary their home. Throughout the seasons there are special classes held for children and adults on these birds of prey. Such classes include 'Owls: Flying Hunters of the Night' and 'Soaring Birds'. The grounds of the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary are easy to stroll around, and there are viewing platforms complete with telescopes, and bridges. There is a small lagoon that adjoins Wintergreen Lake, and it has a rail surrounding it where visitors can read about the various trees and plants grown there. Some of other varieties of birds you will see when visiting the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary include Pheasants, grouse, quail, herons, songbirds, swans, ducks, geese and even a peacock. My digital camera is nothing to brag about, and it is an older model, but the layout of the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary made it easy to get decent close up shots of many of the birds despite this. Professional photographers visit the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary often, through the various seasons, as a means of getting some great photographs of the birds. Visitors will enjoy the gift shop that is at the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary as well. It carries a wide collection of books on nature, birds, birdhouse building, as well as the usual stuffed animals and other collectibles. One can also buy by the pound coffee grown at the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, as well as maple syrup produced at the nearby Kellogg Forest. Both are cared for and maintained by Michigan State University, and were original gifts to Michigan by cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg. Admission to the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary varies from $3 for children to $4 and $5 for adults, depending on the event. Annual memberships are also available. The funds from admission to the Sanctuary, and donations given there, go towards helping the preserve the grounds and exhibit for everyone. This place is kind of out of the way and you never hear much about it. But IMHO I think its really better than Binder park. Every time we go to Binder it is packed, super noisy, and generally full of weirdos. Here it is quiet, relaxing, fun, and a great deal! The sanctuary is amazing I plan to donate here soon! We always have a great time here and my daughter LOVES it. We see something new almost every time we go. We got to feed a muskrat family in the black swan area last year (made for a few good pictures). You see raccoons drawn out a lot and filling up on the corn (the allure is to much and they come out during the day to stuff up on the free meals) for the geese and ducks. We stopped by earlier today and saw a Red Fox being bad trying to get Goose eggs. A few years back Im pretty sure we got a glimpse of a Coyote as well. They have a great gift shop where you can get special bird boxes, stuffed animals, and a bunch of other things. They also sell pails of corn so you can go feed the birds, ducks, chipmunks, swans, geese, or whatever looks like it wants some corn. I think this is literally the most swans I have ever seen anywhere! During the summer they have almost every type of swan imaginable. I feel lame but I always love to go see the Black Swans.. they are really cool and unique. My daughter thinks it all is really awesome. They have ducks, geese, bob whites, quail, pheasants, swans, various owls, hawks, bald eagle, and a bunch of other things. Peacocks and other random things wander around during the summer months I believe they have classes and tours during the summer months. Be careful were you step by the water! To bad you cant fish here! The fish are huge.. you throw a pebble in and they all fight for it. Lol I guess that would almost be cheating though. read more

Kellogg Bird Sanctuary has been an all time favorite for as long as I can remember. I love that I am able to now take my child here and make memories with him! I love the addition of the little library outside, I've had fun leaving usually nature books there for anyone and everyone. The trail around the lake is excellent as well. This place is great for young and old alike. read more
