Kelly's makes a classic north shore style roast beef. I generally go with James River bbq sauce and mayo as toppings, medium rare, sliced thin, with au jus on the side, and it's satisfying every time. Everyone has their own favorite roast beef spot, and Kelly's sometimes gets some hate for being a chain, but it's a good option and they are still customer focused and accommodating at all of the locations I've visited. Their clam chowder is standard, in a good way. Their fried seafood is ok, though not on the level of places like Farnham's or Woodman's [or insert your personal favorite seafood shack here]. But, it's definitely serviceable. Their lobster roll is ok at best but you can get a surf and turf with a roast beef sandwich and a roll with a side, which can satisfy a couple of hankerings at once. My first time at restaurant & figured I'd try what they were known for- roast beef sandwich. I purchased the large sandwich with all the fixings, cheese, mayo, lettuce & tomato & BBQ sauce. The sandwich came out looking nice, the meat was pretty red though- after my first bite, the meat wasn't warm! Is that normal? I was expecting the meat to be warm or hot (like Arby's), a few more bites, the meat was chewy and stringy. I opened up the sandwich which was basically slapped together- scarce on the condiments, 1/2 way through the sandwich I had to spit out a chewy fat meat, then @ 3/4 way done- I tossed the rest. I won't be back. That 1 large roast beef was $13.32. That is probably $7 too much for this chewy meat sandwich. Where's my refund? Yikes! read more

Kelly's Roast Beef is a nicer fast food chain with good prices. The inside is very clean and the staff are quick and friendly. I honestly do not have much experience with roast beef and I prefer pastrami over it. I got the normal roast beef combo with mayo, BBQ sauce and cheese which helps add flavor to the sandwich. I do wish the cheese was melted but that's probably not how it's done. The fries are good and crispy. I took smaller bites with the roast beef to make it easier to chew. Got Kelly's for takeout and it wasn't bad - definitely not the most amazing meal nor was it terrible, just average. We ordered online and picked it up rather quickly which was good as we were in a rush and there was a somewhat long queue inside. They have the takeout orders set on the side and it was relatively fast to go in, pick it up, and leave. Things were nicely packaged so it was also easy to eat in the car a few minutes later - overall, clean experience. The sandwich was not bad, good amount of roast beef and flavor. The fries on the other hand were some of the blandest I've ever had - absolutely no salt or any sort of taste. I love potatoes and fries so it wasn't inedible, but it would've been nice to have a tiny bit of flavor. The coleslaw was also a bit disappointing - again, no taste and just super watery. After driving by this place on my way to and from Costco for years and years, finally decided to stop by and try it out, especially after a friend recommended it, and after having tried Mike's Roast Beef near the Encore casino a couple weeks ago (see my review for it). Well, this place is really a mixed bag. Parking is certainly a lot easier and more plentiful than Mike's and the interior dining area is far far nicer (read: you have actual booths and tables where you can comfortably hang and take your time to eat rather than Mike's two window-side narrow formica counters with stools and zero public restrooms). But the actual food? Meh, Mike's easily wins out. They do give you a generous amount of meat, more so than Mike's, but the bread and condiments/prep is mediocre. Milkshake was pretty good, I guess I would get that again. Onion rings have way too much batter, such that they are inedible as soon as they're no longer piping hot. Service was not bad (they give you a number and bring the food out to your table) although we had to clean our own table since apparently only a cleaning person does that rather than the behind-the-counter staff (who were plentiful and not exactly bustling). Person who took our order seemed to be a high school kid working a summer job, putting in just enough effort to collect his paycheck. General impression of the place is one of complacency, a.k.a. resting on their laurels: they know that due to their location, longstanding local rep, and nicer surroundings they will never lack for customers. Me, next time I have a craving for some fried food and roast beef or pastrami sandwiches, I'll head back to Mike's despite their lack of amenties and tricky parking situation. read more

Haven't been here in so long! Came by after work evening shift around 9:30pm Wednesday ordered from the drive thru I got the classic combo of clams, shrimp, scallops and it comes with fries and onion rings and to wash it down with large sprite! Clams where cooked right tastes fresh, shrimp was crisp outside and inside shrimp tasted good also not oily or over fries. Opinion rings perfect and the fries golden brown and crispy lightly salted. Walked in Sunday about 5:15. All employees behind the counter were talking loudly among themselves like they were somewhere else. A few gathered around a table closest to the end of their counter, talking and listening to music. The music was played on speaker, everyone could hear it. It seemed likely that there was no manager on site. There was no discipline that one would expect in a professional place. I had already ordered fish sandwiches. Had I not. I would've walked out. They placed them in a bag that had a small hole in the bottom. When I got home I noticed that one of the sandwich boxes was upside down. And there was no tartar sauce. This past weekend saw Boston with temps in the 70's in November! This is crazy and we had to go to the beach one more time for the year. We went to Revere beach and there is a Kellys location there. My wife had been craving a roast beef sandwich for a while so it was perfect. There were plenty of people ordering and dining on the outside tables this nice afternoon day. The staff was super patient and nice in taking our order, and also when I had to go back and ask for more sauce etc. The food was good. Roast beef sandwich - very good! They are known for this Clam chowder - I'm more used to the NE creamy kind, but the flavor is there and there were lots of clam bits BBQ beef burger - It was okay. I don't care for it but thankfully my kid liked it Clam and scallop combo - I think there is less clam than expected on this plate...but things are expensive these days, I guess. Taste wise, it was good...their tartar sauce is amazing though..ask for extra! They have a beverage machine inside the store...the kind that spits out any drink you can dream of. Been here many times over the years, though not as often lately. They have a few locations, this one is their original directly across from Revere Beach. Our party of five ordered: 2 Large Roast Beef Sandwiches with sauce: $10.95 ea. 1 Small Roast Beef Sandwich with sauce on the side: $9.75 1 Reuben: $11.95 1 Caesar Salad with Chicken: $10.95 1 Medium Fry: $5.50 The sandwiches came in plastic containers, the fries in a paper bag. The fries were sampled on the way home, and they were hot and crispy, but needed some salt. The sandwiches had to wait until we arrived. Unfortunately, as the sandwiches are hot, and are inside a plastic container, they got soggy in the 10 minutes it took to begin eating them. There was too much sauce on the large sandwiches (they were kind of drenched and sloppy). The roast beef was a little chewy, but the Reuben was very good. I'd rather see Kelly's using paper to wrap their sandwiches for environmental reasons, but I also think their sandwiches might arrive less soggy. Im utterly disappointed. First of all... the prices went up (not sure if this was b/c of new owners). I placed an order for a plain hotdog and a chocolate shake. I arrived in 15 min and it wasn't ready. There was nobody in the restaurant and everybody was just standing in the back. In somebody came in a placed and order for a hamburger and fries and got his order before me. After 12 min, I asked where my order was and they said if it still wasn't ready. So I questioned why was it taking so long for just a plain hotdog and a shake. After 16 minutes I finally got my food. This is why other patrons has started coming in and receiving their orders before mine. Not to mention, I placed an order recently and I could not do so without creating an account and which I was supposed to receive a five dollar coupon for doing so. But I went to go place the order and add the coupon. It raised the prices of my items so the coupon basically became invalid. I went inside and told them about the coupon and showed it to them and they told me they could not honor it even though they saw it and they don't know why the prices kept going up as I tried to check out. Since getting my drivers back in the late 60's it was such a treat to drive to Revere with girlfriends to enjoy a Kelly's Roast Beef Sandwich and Fries while sitting on the beach or bandstand, how romantic. Kelly's Roast Beef is famous for (at least in my mind) its roast beef sandwiches, clam chowder, and frappes. Something that I found out recently (maybe because it's a new addition) is that their lobster rolls are only about $20! That's half the price of the lobster rolls in Boston proper. I'm never able to convince tourists of the worth of driving outside the city, but if I could, I'd send them all here. I got dinner tonight for my family tonight and what a disappointment it turned out to be. Roast beef has changed and not for the better. The beef was so well done, sliced too thin and for the second time they neglected to add tomato. It lacked the flavor it once had . I have passed this place a million times and have heard about it, but hadn't been. I went last Saturday between going to the Encore casino for the first time and hitting up my favorite distillery, Short Path. I'm not a roast beef person, so I went with the shrimp plate with french fries. The plate came with tartar sauce or cocktail sauce for the shrimp (I opted for cocktail) and I also ordered a Coke. We got a plastic number and they brought the food to our table when it was ready. The food was ok. The fries were crisp, but completely unseasoned (I had to add salt and pepper for flavor). The shrimp were good and fried well, but I they had forgotten my cocktail sauce, so I had to go back to the counter to get it. Mid-way through my meal, I realized they hadn't brought my soda either, so I had to go to the counter again to ask for it. I would go back to Kelly's if someone really wanted to. The shrimp was good and the portion size was plenty for me. The fries should be given some oomph and they need to remember to give a person everything they ordered. When I asked for new ones I was given them immediately, which means they already had hot ones cooked and chose to gave me the ones that were not hot. The place needs music! While I was eating I could hear the cooks bantering back and forth, real turn off. Sure, the place has "roast beef" in the name but they're just as much a seafood joint as they are a beef joint. Fast food style, order at the counter and they'll bring it to you. This restaurant could have been an Arby's in a previous life with the booths and condiments layout. I chose the lobster roll for lunch today. A good serving of lobster in a very light mayonnaise with just a little bit of celery on a toasted hot dog bun. Quite traditional and quite good. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Girl behind the counter did anything she could do to not help me (including playing on her phone) until the guy in charge of the drive thru told her to take my order. Sandwich was meh. Beef was sliced far too thickly and was dry. Milkshake was very good though! Next time I'll take the extra time to get up to Pete's in Woburn if I want a good beef and good service. Kelly's is great for quick food, but not what I would necessarily call "fast food", since most of your food is made to order. Naturally, their Roast Beef is outstanding. I don't get them often, but they do have really good Hot Dogs as well. There are two items that they don't do well; the fried fish sandwich, and the Club Sandwich. The fried fish is okay, more or less mediocre. This is because they use "Atlantic White Fish" which really could be any kind of white fish, which means the quality and espeically the taste will vary from one visit to the next. For a five star Fish Sandwich, you absolutley must have one made of Haddock. So for that, I have to go elsewhere. Again, their Club Sandwich is desent, and better overall that the fried fish sandwich, but it definitely is not what any New Englander would decribe as being a Club Sandwich. A Club Sandwick has three slices of bread (not only two that Kelly's uses), and is ALWAYS toasted (at Kelly's you have to ask for it to be toasted). There are, of course, two layers of meat and generous poriton of them, particularly bacon, which is really what make a Club Sandwich a true Club Sandwich (with only two slices of bread, Kellly's naturally only has one layer of meat). Again, when I want one of these, I go elsewhere. The rest of their menu is excellant. My wife loved all their seafood and especially their shellfish items, especially the clam plate (I'm allergic to shellfish, so I can't eat them, theredfore I can't comment directly on them). Unquestionably, their Roast Beef is among the best in New England. The french fries I would give 6-7 stars out of 10. Not the best, but pretty decent. Not good enough for me to get them frequently though. I'm exceptionally picky when I come to French Fries. Their shakes are also very good, but not quite five star, but easily four stars.
