Finally reopened after Covid hit. They have renovated and looks more like Chinese version of Portillos. The bathroom is super clean now, let's see how long that lasts lol. The portions are smaller, price is same but I don't blame them, they need to survive Covid.... like everyone else. It's still the best restaurant in Chinatown in my own opinion (well, my girlfriend and a few other friends also agreed on that as well). Now, here are some part that changed. Their menu has gotten smaller, there is a a lot less to choose from. Not that those things are popular enough for me to care, but I did noticed they have cut down on how many items they offer, probably to reduce cost on items nobody orders. And here is the part that makes me sad. The drink menu also shrunk!!! They used to offer about 3 times more drinks. I like the new decorations and the place is bright and clean. The bowl of noodle I had which called Mong Kok was great. The soup was clear umami and the noodle was elastic. It came with curry fish balls (they really cooked the curry flavor into the fish balls), a chicken wing (it was cooked with soy sauce and a lot of sugar, I loved the taste), beef brisket (so so so so soft), satay pork skin (first time had pork skin in satay flavor, very good), egg, radish, and lettuce. $14+tax for all of those was not cheap but not expensive either. They even advertised that they are Hong Kong cuisine but honestly there are better restaurants in Chinatown to go to get Hong Kong cuisine. I do think they have knock offs of stuff available at other restaurants like the sweet sake sauce that Chi Cafe does. I go my timeless favorite - mandarin pork in thousand island sauce. Something about it here was just off. Also, the dish was kinda small. I'm totally used to bigger pieces of meat. We got the bbq pork baos. They were TERRIBLE. For some reason, they decided to put ginger in there? Like big pieces of ginger - the kind you get with sushi. I wouldn't be surprised if they repackaged that and put it in the bao. What sucks is that we couldn't avoid this! They didn't have the ingredients in the dish listed. I assumed it would be bbq pork meat and herbs. It was worse. It was a very bad taste. I have loved Ken Kee's since highschool but would frequent the Chinatown hot spot while I was in college at UIC. They've undergone a big renovation because the once drab run of the mill Chinatown restaurant now has swanky interior inside! They raised the prices a little bit and made portions smaller to match. That bit was quite disappointing to me and for that huge deal they lose a star. On my most recent visit, I got the sweet & sour chicken. I have a hard time ordering anything else here because it's just so unique and fantastic here. I need to order it to go next time and actually try something new. The sweet & sour chicken has held up to the test of time and is still every bit as amazing as it was those millions of times I got it in college. Their sauce isn't overly unique but it does have small teak I can't put my finger on that differentiates it from the standard Chinatown sweet & sour sauce. The chicken is what makes this dish. It's not the huge, dry pieces you'll often find which makes me wonder if these are the crap parts of the chicken...especially since on my last visit there was a big piece of cartilage that ended up in my mouth...but overall, YUM! Oh man. I wonder if the head chef was off or was changed since I was last here? The congee we ordered was super bland, the fried vermicelli noodles were also under-salted, and the only dish with any appreciable flavor was the stir-fried morning glory with shrimp paste. I had always preferred Ken Kee's congee over the Chi Cafe one, but this experience definitely made me rethink that. Hopefully this experience is just a one-off, but I am definitely hesitant to return given all the other restaurant selections in the area. We ordered an appetizer and meals for everyone in our party of 4. 2 of the meals came out right away, before the appetizers, and one of the noodle bowls was totally wrong. The waiter argued about it the grudgingly brought some meat which did not resemble what was ordered at all. No apology. The 3rd meal came, also before the appetizers (pot stickers, nothing exotic). It was supposed to have scallops. Instead there was rubbery calamari. Finally the appetizers came and they looked as though they had been frozen and reheated. They were tough. This place makes the best 干炒牛河 (Unique Fried Rice Noodle with Sliced Beef and XO Sauce) I have had in a LONG time. This might be the best 干炒牛河 I have ever had. Holy moly! The beef was cooked to perfection, very tender and full of flavor, seared to be almost a little crispy. The noodles were extremely tasty. The flavor and saltiness were perfectly balanced. I have never had XO sauce, but it definitely blends in well with this dish. Beware that it is a slight bit spicy (there are some peppers). There were a bit too many vegetables for my personal preference, but other than that that was my perfect meal. It was so, so delicious. It is one of those rare dishes that actually makes me say "Wow! The noodle portion was like for one person The chef did not know how to chop the lobster which really made the dish bad because all the broken shells were mixed in with the noodle. I'm so glad we did because it was easily the best meal I've had in Chinatown in a while. It was good for a rainy day. I can tell their noodles were hand - made! However, I wasn't blown away by it. It might depend what you get there meaning I think some dishes there are more traditional and others are more Americanized! The restaurant's atmosphere is really cool. They have neon lights and murals and posters on the wall that make you feel like you are in the middle of a big city. The restaurant also seemed to be very clean. However, the positives ended here for me. While our server was quick to take our order, he did not check on us once after our food came out. Another server standing in the dining room was putting in her eye drops on the dining room floor and did not appear to wash her hands afterwards, which seems pretty unhygienic. My friend's food came out within minutes, and mine did not come out for another 10-15 minutes afterward, so she was almost done with her food by the time I got mine. I ordered the crispy chicken chow mein and it was extremely disappointing. I only ate a few bites. The chicken was cubed and not at all crispy. The whole meal was just very bland; no flavor whatsoever. Outside of the bok choy, there was maybe one carrot in the entire meal and no other vegetables. The sauce was watery and thin and half of the noodles were burnt or crispy/overcooked. It was not at all what I expected. This is a new restaurant with a new owner, a new chef, recipes changed, and using the old name. We've been to this place for many years and our old favorites were all different. Some dishes seemed to have the same recipes but cooked by amateurs: fried rice with lumps, cooked with medium heat instead of high; beef tripes did not marinate long enough; steamed chicken used older, larger bird with more chewy texture. The only good part was the restaurant now has open windows on a nice day. We felt safer in the pandemic. Many of the restaurants in Chicago Chinatown have changed ownership or shutdown permanently.
