I hired a Luton van so that I could move from Canterbury up to London as I had quite a lot to move and only wanted to it in one trip (the first 100 miles is free then it costs per mile). The hire cost seemed reasonable to me - it was £75 for a day, which is all i needed. Then there was £200 insurance... Which felt a bit steep but I paid it on the understanding that it would be returned back to e asap (who can afford £200 just when they are moving). The move went great and the van seemed in pretty good knick for a hire. The problems only arose once we had returned the van. The deposit that was supposed to be returned asap was anything but prompt. When I hadn't received the deposit after a week I gave them a ring and was told "it's definitely been repaid and will be with you in the next couple of days". Another week passed and I called again. This time I was told they would check with their accountants and see whats happened. Then nothing... I heard nothing from them until a month later when they called me to tell me that they had just realised the repayment was never made. I'll give them their dues - they did call and let me know but it was now a month and a half after my original rental and i still hadn't been paid. I was told they were processing it now and it would take 5 extra days for the money to go into my account. That's fine but it was December the 21st before I received the money after taking out the rental on November the 16th. Very disappointed. Had used Kendall Van Hire Leatherhead in the past to support more local firms but on this occasion the disruption caused by a failure in their return system and the attitude of the person on site when I finally was able to get into the depot to return the van means I will never use them again. The van was good and the price fair...perhaps as long as you don;t do a high milage. However I needed my car to get to an appointment the next day but they said the key on the key ring would let me in and I could drop the van off anytime. I turned up at 8.50pm and the depot was locked but the key did not open the lock. I tried for half an hour. I have rheumatoid arthritis and started getting severe cramps in my hands as I had tried so long wiggling the key. A very kind gentleman parking his car near the entrance asked me if I was having problems. He said he used Kendall all the time and he tried the key too but after a few minutes couldn't open it. I kept trying and waited for perhaps another customer to arrive but just before 10pm I gave up and drove all the way home. I then had to get up at 6am the next day to get the van back. When I arrived the gates were open and I explained to a member of staff what had happened. He was not apologetic at all and just said you have to wiggle the key a bit. I explained I had tried for over an hour and another person had tried as well and how disruptive it had been for me but he said I would have to take it up with the Manager as he was only the van cleaner. I did not think this was necessarily entirely true anyway and he was representing Kendall at that time. He took the key and wiggled it several times and the lock opened. He couldn't really have cared less about the trouble I had had. I have had keys myself that haven't worked well but you get used to it after a while and develop a feel for the lock but other people who are not used to it find it impossible. My approach in these circumstances would have been to take the customers details and get the Manager to contact the customer. This has cost me a lot of time and probably some money. (Much more than the cost of the hire in fact due to missed appointments.) If the attitude of the member of staff had been more focused on my issues then I would have left less angry about this but it seems clear customer services are no longer a priority with Kendall read more
