My wife and I have been doing CrossFit since 2012 and found KSCF when we moved here in 2018. We have been members since and to be quite honest it has become a home away from home, even after moving from Kendall Square to Davis Square where we have closer options available. Kendall Square CrossFit is a great location, a supportive and energetic community, and has great coaches that prioritize safety and range of motion/movement to heavy weights and maxxing out. Everyone is engaged, friendly, and supportive with no big egos or difficult personalities present in the classes no matter the level or how long you have been a member (we get a lot of drop-ins as well). Everyone is there to get better and achieve their goals and there is not a bunch of nonsense and power struggles that I have seen and experienced in other gyms. The equipment is well cared for and maintained and while not everything is present there for a dedicated games-style athlete, there is plenty of equipment to get your typical CrossFit-style workout in (except the assault/echo bike, but those things can stay in the trash where they belong :P). This is all managed despite a smaller space than some other gyms, but the coaches manage it so there is no danger of injury or overcrowding due to space issues. It's essentially two racquetball courts with a wall knocked out to give you an idea of the size of the space. It gives it a cool feeling with the vaulted ceilings but can carry a pretty heavy echo when instruction is going on... which also happens when the music is played which makes it really loud (which I like). Members also get access to the CAC amenities such as the locker rooms, showers, saunas, and other equipment. You seem to get more than you do for the same relative cost at other CrossFit gyms in the area where many don't have showers, saunas, or even lockers. We have been very pleased with our 7ish years at KSCF and despite having changing situations and evaluating options to go elsewhere, we never left or think about leaving. It is truly a pillar in our daily lives and the membership has led to many friendships in (and more importantly outside) the gym. I can't recommend KSCF enough to anyone in the area looking for a way to better themselves and not worry about how they are viewed while beginning or continuing their fitness journey, even if you are new to CrossFit or just want to see what it is all about! read more

I've been to my share of CrossFit gyms around Cambridge, but nothing quite prepared me for Kendall Square CrossFit. Located in the heart of Cambridge's innovation district, this facility seems to have missed the memo on both innovation and basic maintenance. Walking into the gym feels like stepping into a time capsule -- one that's been gathering dust for months. Every piece of equipment wears a visible layer of grime, from the dumbbells to the rowing machines. When I asked staff about the cleanliness standards, I was told, matter-of-factly, "We clean, but dust flies around." It's the kind of response that makes you wonder if management has given up on the concept of deep cleaning entirely. The exercise floor mat tells its own story of neglect. Fraying edges and splintering surfaces turned my hands into pincushions during floor exercises -- a recurring issue that happened in nearly every class I attended. For a sport that demands athletes grab, grip and ground themselves constantly, having equipment that actively wounds participants seems counterproductive. Then there are the towels, which possess all the softness of medium-grit sandpaper. Using them feels less like drying off and more like an aggressive exfoliation treatment. I developed rashes that took days to heal -- hardly the post-workout glow I was seeking. The ventilation system appears to be more theoretical than functional. The air hangs heavy with the accumulated sweat of countless workouts, creating an atmosphere that newcomers will find overwhelming and regulars have simply learned to endure. It's the kind of environment where you find yourself taking deep breaths before entering, knowing fresh air will be in short supply. Space is at such a premium that peak-hour classes become exercises in human Tetris. Athletes regularly collide during movements, and navigating around classmates becomes part of the workout itself. Adding to the puzzling equipment situation: unlike every other CrossFit gym I've visited, this one doesn't provide jump ropes -- forcing members to bring their own or go without. The coaching staff presents the starkest contrasts I've encountered in fitness. Most instructors seem to view their teaching duties as an unfortunate interruption to their day. Jimmy Kuykendall projects such visible disinterest that his lack of enthusiasm becomes contagious in the worst possible way. Meaghan Shea displays a sense of deep apathy that permeates her instruction, making participants feel more like an inconvenience than paying customers. Stavroula Papdopoulos brings energy but delivers instruction that's often incomprehensible, leaving participants to guess at proper form and technique. But then there's Nery Amaya, who stands out like a beacon in this sea of mediocrity. Amaya demonstrates genuine expertise, offers clear instruction, and maintains the kind of motivational energy that makes the difference between a good workout and a great one. His presence raises an obvious question: how does such a skilled coach remain in an environment that seems designed to crush professional spirits? Having sampled other local options like Invictus and CrossFit Somerville, I can confirm that these standards aren't universal to the sport. Those facilities demonstrate that it's entirely possible to maintain clean equipment, breathable air, and engaged coaching staff. Kendall Square CrossFit feels like a missed opportunity in a neighborhood known for innovation and excellence. The gym charges competitive rates for what amounts to a substandard experience, saved from complete failure only by one instructor's determination to maintain professional standards. For potential members weighing their options, I'd suggest visiting during peak hours to experience the space constraints firsthand, and perhaps bringing your own towel -- and jump rope. For anyone with other options in the Cambridge area, I would recommend staying as far away from this facility as possible. Save your money, your health, and your time -- you'll thank yourself later. read more

I attended Kendall Square CrossFit for about a year and couldn't recommend it more highly. From day one, the community was incredibly welcoming -- friendly members, supportive coaches, and a no-ego environment that made it easy to show up and work hard. The workouts consistently pushed me beyond what I'd do on my own, and the range of experience in each class meant there was always someone nearby to chase or pace with. The coaches strike a great balance between being laid-back and ensuring good form and safety, which helped me build strength and confidence without injury. I recently moved out of Boston and will genuinely miss this place. If you're looking for a great CrossFit gym in the Cambridge area -- whether you're brand new or experienced -- KSCF is the spot. read more

I came to check them out today and although the actual box was small, you get to have access to the entire facility, which Includes a steam and sauna.. After I asked Coach Mariette Martinez a question this morning she yelled at me in front of a room full of people about 25 times in about 30 seconds that "she doesn't care". She wouldn't look at or talk to me. In 20 years of going to gyms this is the most unprofessional thing I have experienced to which she said there is a first for everything, laughed, and walked away. The odds are you will have a better experience than me but I will unfortunately forever remember this one. read more

After Brick CrossFit closed in Downtown, Kendall Square CrossFit was my next destination. I heard they had a great program; a sense of community, WOD selections, and coaches. Come to find out, that was absolutely true. I attended twice a week and each day I was met with a fun group of individuals, kind/professional coaches, and leaving with a sense of accomplishment. My biggest fear about potentially going to Kendall Square Crossfit at first was basically the size of the facility -- it being too small. However, maybe it was the size that helped form greater connections with fellow workout mates. Either way the size of the facility did not matter because everything else was amazing! If you seek connection, community, and a sense of accomplishment this is a really great place to find that. Highly recommended, check out some time. read more

Dropped in to check out this box and the Friday night lights 18.1 open actions​ while in town for the C.R.A.SH.-B Championships. First off it is located inside another facility which is very cool as it gives its members access​ to very nice changing rooms and showers and other amenities​. When we went inside the box space we were greeted warmly by Jared the head coach and co/owner. He was really great and you could tell he was in tune with he business. The members were friendly and warm to strangers which was great. while the space was small ​but seemed to be inline with the area as all businesses in Boston seem very limited on space, they had maximized its usage​​ verywell and it felt like you had exactly what you needed for a great workout! read more

Good gym with friendly staff. It's located in the CAC which gives your access to the locker rooms and showers. I was staying in Cambridge for work and dropped in to the 7:15am class. I really enjoyed the workout and the convenience of the gym. read more

I really wanted to love this place - but the pros were outnumbered by the cons, which included snarky comments mixed in with a bait and switch. Maybe I encountered them on two off days. I won't be going back a third time to find out. Pros: Close to work Great schedule Great price point Super friendly directors Cons: During my first demo/on-ramp class on 5/6, I was told that I squatted wrong. Which cool, fine, tell me what i'm doing wrong. Instead the girl, instead of repositioning me, made me do some on my own, looking HORRIFIED. There were only 2 of us in the on-ramp class... which was a great opportunity for them to correct what I was doing. Instead, she just watched and shook her head a lot. I have NEVER done CrossFit before. Ever. The only experience I had with weights was doing some deadlifts and squats at a boxing gym in Southie. The thought of doing an over the head lift was daunting. I don't remember even what lift they were trying to teach me, but apparently, I wasn't doing it right. The pro here was that Jared, the actual coach for the class I signed up for, made me feel ok with feeling weird and took the time to tell me what I needed to do. At the end of my first demo/on ramp class, the girl trainer took us out to the main area to stretch out. She told me that I "wasn't ready for crossfit", because of some imbalances I had in my legs and hips. She told me I couldn't come back to crossfit until I had a mobility assessment, and worked on these issues. Here's the thing about this - CrossFit is meant to be scalable and for people of all shapes, sizes and mobility. I was recommended to start CrossFit as strength training to my running regimen. I'm always willing to listen to how I can improve, but telling me that I can't do something because I'm not strong enough to start? That seems weird when one of the values of CrossFit is for everyone to join in, and make it a workout for themselves. Anyways. On 5/13 I go in for my "mobility assessment". The trainer talked to me about my goals, (completing my first marathon), and did a body fat measurement with a weird hand held thing that said my body fat was 32%. Weird, since when I got it done with calipers in January during my physical assessment at my doctor, he clocked me in at 22%. As he's going through my goals, he makes note that my goal body fat should be at 20% (down from his reported 35%) and my weight should be down 25lbs. At this point he told me "Imagine you are running around with a 25 lbs weight around your waist. That's basically what's happening... and so without that, you will improve your running." (I'll note I wear a size 4/6, and have no body issues or issues with my weight. I'm not quite sure where 25lbs will come off from?) Asking someone to lose 12% body fat, who is not overweight, is irresponsible. When we finally got to the mobility part, he had me do maybe 15 squats. This was really the only useful information I got out of him. He said when I squat that one of my foot rolls out, which comes from a weak ankle, which in turn shifts my back to arch a little more than it should. He put my ankles on a little weight (so it mimicked a high heel) and I squatted almost perfectly. Sweet! I have weak ankles. Now that I know where my weakness comes from, I can scale my CrossFit WOD to help me strengthen them, right? NOPE What I got was a bait and switch, that I needed to sign up for 6 - 10 weeks of personal training to work on my ankles and tight hamstrings before I could even THINK of joining in on a CrossFit WOD. All I need is a membership and personal training ranges from $85-$65 per session... "The more sessions you buy, the cheaper they are, just for you to know. Which is weird, because I have friends of all shapes and sizes and mobility capabilities who go to different Crossfit boxes who have all be assisted in SCALING their workout but never being told they COUDLN'T do it. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. I'll be finding a box that won't try to bait and switch me by crushing my self esteem just to make a buck. read more

I am here in Mass for 6 weeks attending school and needed a place to do CrossFit. I signed up for classes here and find that this place has its own little community and some special people enjoying the workouts. The coaches are all good people and keep things fun for everyone. I really like the vibes this place gives to anyone who walks in off the street and wants to jump in a workout. This box and community will grow and will turn into what ever the coaches desire. I have been a member at KSCF since they opened in December 2013. When I started I was only able to do one pull-up and I am now able to do 10 in a row in May! I have never felt better about myself and my strength, and I've also gained confidence in my ability to try new things and conquer my fears. I attribute these positive changes to the coaches at KSCF and the other crossfit members. In particular I really enjoy Katie T's classes because she is an excellent teacher and incredible crossfit athlete herself. The atmosphere amongst members is friendly and supportive and I couldn't be happier with my decision to commit to a membership at this box. There is a bonus at KSCF at well - getting a gym membership to CAC included which has allowed me to take spin classes and body combat classes as well as use their weight room. The locker rooms at CAC have also been renovated recently and have nice showers, sauna, steam room etc... Overall KSCF is an awesome box! read more

This gym is awesome!!! I am part of cross fit at this gym. Once you are a member you get to partake in any of the classes except cross fit cost more but I think it is really worth it. I have been doing cross fit starting in January and have already noticed differences in my strength. Almost all the coaches are great and good at teaching you the correct form as well as pushing you to your limit. The gym has a lot of other facilities and classes. I would recommend this gym everyone is friendly and welcoming. read more

I've been doing crossfit at KSCF for 2 months now and I absolutely love it. It's not the closest (or cheapest) box to me, but I've tried others and KSCF has been the best. The membership includes a membership at Cambridge Athletic Club which is such a huge bonus because a lot of the other places I've checked out are much more garage like and don't offer much else except crossfit. The trainers have been great and I've never felt like I couldn't ask them for help on form or weight suggestions. Everyone there is super friendly (members and trainers alike). I have left every class feeling stronger and ready for the next one. If I had the time, I'd be there 5 days a week. read more

I have been CrossFitting since 2009 and been to 40+ CF gyms. This is a new, budding gym which shows a lot of promise. Jared, the owner, is a knowledgeable guy who follows the Kelly Starrett mobility method; if you're unaware what that means, simply put: you WILL be more durable. They seem to be expanding nicely and have all the requisite equipment. Some people just aren't cut out for the intensity of CrossFit (as evidenced by a few reviews). CrossFit is not Jazzercise or P90X. It might be tough, but if you're serious about your fitness and committed to making it to class then you will see results. read more

I love this place, and I'm allergic to most types of exercise! My exercise allergy is one of the reasons I needed to work on my figure and don't head to the gym as often as I could. Even for my fly by night attendance, the team has been extremely welcoming and don't pressure anyone into pushing so far past their limits that they risk injury. I also like that the coaches work hard to make this a respectful community with fun events outside the box without being cultish. This sense of community allows me to keep coming back when I can (I'm working on making this a more routine situation). I can now do power cleans, lost a few inches around my midsection, one pants size, and have a better sense of confidence to just go for it and face challenges. The space itself is a little small, but members have access to various amenities, everything that you need for a real workout (even some swole guys look like they'll pass out midway)and a climate controlled environment given that the gym is located within the Cambridge Athletic Club--so its a really good value. read more
