One of my friends has been going here since she was about 9 and always goes here to get her hair styled for a party or special ocassion and her hair always looks amazing. The prices range depending on who is cutting your barnet. For a stylist it's £30, senior stylist £40 and by the creative director it's £50. They also do hair conditioning and replenishing treatments that start from a whopping £100. A very modern salon, very organised and not a hair out of place. Literally.

Either you need to remortgage your house for meh results, your hair gets butchered, or the stylist bullies you into dyeing your already black hair black. Fortunately, I'm not one of those girls who cries when it comes to their hair, and my hair grows like. a. weed. After the bullying incident at another Merchant City salon, I thought I'd wait until I was back in NYC to get my hair done. Except my hair became annoyingly long, and that's where Chloe at Alan Edwards came to the rescue. Cute and quirky, she was exactly the opposite of the stylist during my last salon experience (*cough* Chesne). She actually listened to what I wanted, did not roll her eyes when I showed her a picture of the shape (a long bob), nor did she try and bully me into dying my hair or try to sell me products that I didn't need (though I did end up buying the Kérastase volume spray because it smells DIVINE!). My haircut was actually part of an itison deal, but after my experience and subsequent visits (I have since gone much shorter with trust), I would not hesitate to pay full price for the quality of service received. As a Toni and Guy Academy, you might think this place won't give 5-star service, but it really does (I was a regular here for 3 years until my hairdresser, who had started out as a junior, moved up through the ranks to a senior stylist). My recent £38 crappy haircut in London (a self-esteem crippling pixie/shag/mullet hybrid) has been growing out for a couple months now, and I figured that while I was in Glasgow I might as well splash out on a crappy haircut, as it certainly would be less costly than its counterparts in England's capital have been. And I stepped into Essensuals. Sure, there are Essensuals in London, but I was feeling good about this little salon on St Vincent, around the corner from Glasgow Central Station - I mean, how could I go wrong by picking the closest salon to the station where my Glasgow-bound train from London dropped me off . . . ? I admit, this was a hasty choice, and I was fully prepared for the worst. But what I got was the best. I sat down, and my stylist and I pulled the pins that were previously hiding my haircut shame out of my hair, and she started running her hands through my hair (I swear with a baffled look on her face, unless I was imagining it). "What would you like done today?" "I got this awful haircut a while back, and I hate it." "What do you hate about it?" "Mostly the fact that it looks like a mullet." And so after some more discussion, we came to the conclusion that we'd bob it. I was fine with this, although still not expecting much. But the stylist took her time as she snipped through my hair, many times over. She commented on the sheer thickness of my hair, yet she never took out a pair of thinning sheers (this is my litmus test of good stylists). The end result was fabulous. She asked if I wanted anything changed at the end, and I made a non-committal statement about my fringe looking a bit too perfect; she chopped into it to make it a bit more funky and undone. Ultimately, I'm no longer embarrassed of my hair, and, for a Londoner at least, £40 for the amount of time I got in the cutting chair was a bargain. Unfortunately since I can't afford the £120 train tickets every month or so, the hunt for a salon in London continues.

As well as being a hair salon, the Trade Secret in the Buchanan Galleries is a great place to pick…read moreup hair products. They have an amazing selection of brands such as Fudge, Tigi and Bed Head. I found about ten products that I HAD TO HAVE, and I was only in there for a couple of minutes. Sadly, I had to resist the urge to buy ten different curl serums, as this place is anything but cheap. Hair products start around £10 each, and as lovely as they are, I couldn't quite bring myself to part with the money. Behind the shop part of Trade Secret is the hair salon. There were a couple of customers in there as I was having a wander, and they all seemed to be getting on wonderfully with the hair stylists and having a great time. I really felt that this place had a good atmosphere. So yes, a little bit pricey, but if you've got the money then I suggest that you give this place a go.

While, my favourite hairdressers of all time remains Hair Design (a bit more of a walk away), I reckon Cortex will please the masses. It is a small, local hair dressers which is friendly and often fairly quiet so you don't always need to have made an appointment earlier (this suits me, due to my highly indecisive nature). The girls in here are really nice and if you want some advice on what they'd recommend they'll happily provide a few suggestions. I've always had a decent cut out of here and the prices are very reasonable. Though, I've never had my hair dyed in here, so I'm not sure what that aspect of the business is like. They also offer spray tans for only £10 a pop. Something I've yet to try in here but I've heard some very good reviews of it. So, may well take up this great deal once the summer starts to show itself.

Probably the worst service i've ever received... I went to Coia hairdressing to book in with my…read moreusual stylists - and the only person I would trust to take my blonde hair to a rich copper - on arrival I explained who I was there to see and since she was with a client at the time, the two employees on the front desk suggested that, while I wait, I had a look through the different colours of copper they had available. We had a chat and before I could speak to my stylist I was booked in for the following Tuesday. I was surprised on arrival that the hairdresser I asked for was no where to be seen and I had in fact been booked in with a 21 year old student - who i've since learned, had only just received his colouring certificates - I explained I wanted loads of tones and shades of warm coppery colours. So, naturally I was expecting highlights and lowlights of varying colours (I was quoted £120 for this at the time of book in). Instead I received an all over colour slapped in from the root of my hair to the ends - I assume this was done to save them time, which pretty much sums up the quality of this hairdressers - the end result was a bright crass red at the top and carrot orange at the bottom. It was awful... and incredibly flat due to one colour being used all over (think box dye sort of look). To top it off, despite me saying several times that i wanted hardly anything off the end, say literally a cm or so. My hair was cut by about an inch and a half, taking my long hair to medium length. Finally I was charged £135 - so £15 over what I was quoted for highlights and lowlights (which shocked me as highlights would take a lot more time and talent than slapping one colour all over my hair and i know now I was over charged for this treatment). I was so embarrassed, I ran home with my hood up. Following this I reached out to the owner Angela... the response I got was hostile and she even went as far to accuse me of lying and suggested that I was actually in there for a 'colour correction', as opposed to a colour change (bear in mind, my hair was blonde and going copper...). A lot of the messages i received didn't make sense and were just strange in general. She has since refused to respond to my emails. The amount of damage to my hair and the money this visit has caused me is enough to put you off going to the hairdressers in general. I'd suggest going a couple minutes up the road to Thomas Ionta or Ellen Conlin, both provide superior treatments at less of an expense. I know from talking about this experience that I'm not the only one thats had a terrible time here - so hopefully I save someone the drama!!

Never tried the permanent straightening procedure which lasts about 3 hours and is £130. Apparently it's using a Korean type straightening method and products. May try it one day but will do more research on it just incase it dries my hair out. But since I have never had it done before I cannot comment on the results but have seen people who had it done before and they seem to be happy with the results. No disaster stories. This salon has been here for many years and caters mainly for Chinese/Asian clients but locals come here too regularly. A girl called Venice done my hair today and had very good service with hair wash and head massage, blow dry and straightened with irons and serum put through my hair. She went beyond basic customer service and I walked out pleased with results. I would recommend booking in advance before u turn up via phone call. They r open 7 days a week from approximately 10am to 6pm. There is a beauty salon service at the back of the shop run by an older Chinese lady doing massage,facials and slimming enhancement procedures. I haven't tried her.
