Went here for dinner with a table of 6. We had reservations. We stood in the small entrance way where we had to shuffle around for customers entering and exiting for 35 mins before "our table was ready." Complimentary bread and cucumbers were brought to the table, but portion size was for a table of maybe 4. When we asked for more so the entire table could have some our waitress told us we would need to pay for it, and we did because we were starving and just waited 35 mins to sit. Why offer anything if it can't feed the entire table? I then ordered the 10oz filet medium well temperature. When the steak came it was completely blackened and over cooked even for a well done temperature. I informed the waitress the steak was not cooked at the correct temperature and even showed her the inside and said it's not pink in the middle as medium well should be. She said ok and that they would make me another. When the 2nd steak came out my table was nearly done eating. The waitress said the chef said to cut the steak in the middle to verify the temp was correct. This steak was again completely blackened and so well done I could hardly cut into it with a steak knife. At this point I did not want this steak nor any other so I sent it back and told her I do not want another. Then a woman who I am guessing was a manager as she did not introduce herself came over to say "just so you know, we don't cook our medium well steaks pink in the middle." I told her that is fine, but this should be stated to customers because a medium well steak that is not pink in the middle at a restaurant that boasts steaks and chops as a specialty is something I have never encountered before. No one offered a steak at a medium temperature or a replacement meal nothing was offered. The approach from the manager was just to inform me I should have known better. Very disappointing experience all around Between the long wait with a reservation, high prices and extremely overcooked meals. The other orders we had were the chicken piccata that was extremely dry and over cooked, shrimp linguine with tough over cooked shrimp, and chicken parm that was also over cooked to toughness. Our bill was $500 dollars and no one had a plate they enjoyed due to over cooking. Hopefully they are able to rectify this for future customers. read more

This was my second not to great meal at Kens. Went for Valentines Day and had the short ribs which were chewy, tough and not seasoned well. So much of the membrane was left on the meat I couldn't swallow. The pasta dish my wife had with the Alfredo sauce was lacking sauce and taste. Very disappointing since we eat here very frequently. On my other visit I had the meatloaf which was also bland, with nothing special to add to this classic dish. I will give it one my try however before crossing it off my list of resturants. read more

This was my first time at Ken's. Alł of the wait staff were wearing masks. The relish "tray" was not what I was expecting. My dinner partner and I did not eat the slaw; the pickled peppers were delicious; and the pizza bread was good. My Caesar salad's dressing was not good but edible. There are daily specials and Monday was spare ribs so that's what I ordered. I bit fatty for my taste but it was tender and well seasoned. My partner had the filet and it was cooked perfectly. We were full but since we were celebrating my birthday we had dessert. At first, my partner said no to dessert but when she saw how wonderful my apple cake dessert looked, she ordered the carrot/cheese cake. They were both delicious. My husband and I's first time visiting Ken's was to celebrate our anniversary. We will never go back. The waitress was very inattentive and impatient when we asked for suggestions seeing as though it was our first time. I ordered the lake perch and it had absolutely zero flavor; I actually laughed after my first bite because I was confused how something could appear to have seasoning but be completely flavorless. Whether it is a family birthday celebration, holiday dinner with friends, or elegant dinner with my family everyone is very complimentary about the selections, meals and atmosphere. This is a curious little joint around the corner from me. It looked like it was usually crowded and had an interesting look about it...like it had some local personality. Well, if this is the local 'personality', I'm dismayed to be a local. We took a couple friends there...big mistake. The service was, simply put, rude and dismissive. The server spent most of her time on the bar side, which appeared to be full of regulars, and made no efforts to hide her annoyance when we had the nerve to ask for her attention. At one time, when we had been trying to track her down (mind you, this place is very small) for about 10 minutes, we asked another staff person for a piece of bread...or something simple like that. Then our server swooped in...seeming super-offended that we went 'over her head' or made her look bad...or something. What we received then was a piece of really stinky Wonder bread. I kid you not. Wonder bread. The busser, bless his 12 year old heart, couldn't even refill our water once...so I sat empty the majority of the meal. And trying to get our check? Forget it. Anyway...the food was mediocre, at best...but the suckiness of the service is what really stands out. Just don't go. read more

I love how a previous reviewer gives this place a single star because of service. Really? Your going to tell thousands of people not to go because you had one bad experience? Drove by this place like a million times but never stopped in. Glad we did last night. This place has an old school feel to it. They even have a cash register behind the bar from the 20's or something that still works. Our waitress was very busy but was still very attentive to us. I've been going to Ken's with my dad since I was a kid but admittedly haven't gone in about 5 years. Boy am I glad that I did! We used to go for lunch as my dad was always a bit on the frugal side. Same delicious food, even better price. Tonight we stopped in...First we were given coleslaw (that was some of the best I've ever had), a relish tray, and perfectly cooked pizza bread (all complimentary). The chicken noodle soup was fantastic! For the main course I had a spicy penne with a light cream sauce and chicken. I was nervous because it's summer, but the sauce was very light (not thick) and the flavor was perfect. You'd have to like spicy food for this dish but it's soooo good. The portions are HUGE so you'll have lunch for tomorrow. My dad got the perch dinner with a double baked potato. It deceivingly looks like a small portion, but he could barely eat it. Tender, buttered and lightly breaded to perfection. It was perfect. Plus we had SO much food even before it arrived. The service from the server, busser and even maybe an owner were super attentive and so kind...always making sure we were taken care of. For those saying it has too much of a 70s vibe, I disagree... It's not. You can opt for the cool 60s lounge-y vibe with intimate wrap around booths in the bar, or you can go to the left for a more finer dining old school Italian feel. Bar on one side; restaurant on the other. Food was awful. Beef stroganoff was chunky and salty. Noodles and sauce bland. Prime rib was salty and overcooked in places. Salad was ok. They serve a relish tray to make it look like an old-fashioned steakhouse. It is not! Just a pub. Even the perch was bland. Drinks were good and reasonably priced. Hopefully is was a once in a blue moon experience. I don't know if I have ever been so frustrated at dinner. Made a reset for 8:30. Got to the restaurant a few minutes early and was seated outside. Waited a few minutes for the waiter to come over only to have a young man come over and urge us to order right away since the kitchen would be closing at 9:00. Never once did he take an order for drinks. Figured he knew best so we ordered an appetizer and entrees right away. He brought out our appetizer and the salads came out about a minute later. He took the salads back and allowed us to enjoy our baked clam appetizer. One of my biggest pet peeves at a restaurant is a poorly timed meal. I tried to continue to be optimistic that dinner could be salvaged. I asked to speak to the manager to no avail, said she wasn't there. Ok, I threw in the towel. Just give me the bill and we will be on our way. So dinner only cost me about $14 or whatever the appetizer cost. My friends who recommended this place tell me normally it's fantastic. I might try it again, but I don't know. Dine at your own risk. Maybe it will be good...maybe it won't. read more

This place has done some remodeling lately. Very nice atmosphere w good food. My wife and I like to make it our regular place to come for a nice meal. Prices are fair. My favorites are the fried catfish, prime rib, and there is always something good on special. The new owner I think his name is mike is pretty nice. Dont waste your time. We went on a Thursday evening around 4pm. We stood at the door for a good 10 mintues before anyone would acknowlege our presence (place was not crowded). At first I thought it was a race issue (we are black). Everyone at the bar turned around to stare at us as we stood feeling awkward. Finally the waitress seated us. We sat and we sat (there was one table of four people there), finally she came over, and asked what we were having. I asked for the oxtail dinner, she abrutly told me I couldn't have it because of the groupon coupon and it was considered a special. I informed her that according her to the menu, it was considered a special for either Tuesday or Wednesday (can't ememeber exact date it was listed as a special) None the less I asked for the Liver and onions. The decor has not been updated since the 70's. This place is definitly for their special crowd, which by the way were older white people. Whenever they camed in, they were seated promply and they were very attentive to them. I guess some things never change, there will always be a Good Old Boys Club. Not good. Bar quality food in a place that's trying to look nicer than that. Ordered "pretzel bites" for appetizer which ended up being two pretzel rolls (that you could buy at the store) that were covered in butter - not homemade, not fresh, not tasty. Be forewarned their lunch menu is different than dinner menu. Waitress put a ticket in for the wrong item (hey, it happens), and tried to fix it by offering an additional piece of chicken, but that piece came out uncooked. They comp-ed us on the bill, which was nice, but based on the food quality we won't be back. Seems like a better place to grab a drink than to eat at -- the bar was fairly busy at 1 on a Sunday. read more

Today we went in sat down the lady took our drink order right away but then took 10 mins to give them to us the bartender noticed we were neglected n after about 7 mins came n gave is menus. After our drinks came she walked away and continued to ignore us for another 10 mins when she came back my mom said we were ready to order n she fired back with attitude like we inconvenienced her... Wow so unnecessary we were just hungry and ready to order we proceeded to leave hungry if you didn't want to serve us why are you open ... This is not a place with fancy decor. It looks like an old-style restaurant. Don't come here if you're looking for something chi-chi. Come here if you want solid, good, fresh cooking. Everything is made on the premises, and it's all from scratch. The cheeseburgers are made from meat ground in the kitchen. The soup stock comes from the kitchen, not cans. The salad dressings, coleslaw, and relishes are all made freshly on premises. The corned beef sandwich isn't as big as you get in some other places, but he quality of the meat is better than anywhere else. Every day has its specials and most of these are higher quality variations on familiar foods. read more

I've had dinner at least 4 or 5 times at Ken's. Food is excellent! Last time, I had braised oxtails, and they sublime. Service has always been good. My husband and I are Oak Parkers but found ourselves here one night after star gazing along Beverly Shores. And what a great find! It felt like a bustling neighborhood supper club out of another era. Sinatra was the sound track of choice all evening. A big, raucous group came in to celebrate Mardi Gras so it wasn't quiet, but it was definitely friendly. The servers managed to keep up with them and still pay attention to us. I ordered a simple chicken vesuvio. While it took a while to show up to the table, it seems they were taking time to perfect it. I didn't expect much but it was fantastic - lemony, rich and smooth. We will be back for more! read more

Had an amazing dinner at Ken's. Great service from our waitress and the most amazing attention from our busboy Declan, (that young man is going places!). We enjoyed the strip steak and shrimp de Jong the real mashed potato's were delish as well as the minestrone and clam chowder soup. Love, love the relish tray starter! What a great way to start a meal with free appetizers placed right in front of you as soon as you sit with hot pizza bread, French bread and an assortment of salads. Kens is a wonderful local iconic restaurant. Under new ownership related to the past owners they are making great changes and updates to everything slowly but surely. Had dinner at Kens after our sons confirmation and it was excellent. The relish tray and pizza bread was a great start because we were starving and it came right away. The London broil was melt in my mouth perfect and the shrimp was the best I've tasted in years. I had all intentions of having dessert but we were way too full. Our service was great and the atmosphere was super nice. The manager was super friendly, asked if everything was tasting good. Bartender was really cute and she knows how to make a killer French martini. We will definitely be back. The food and service is superb. Among my favorites are the rainbow trout, walleye, London broil, and calamari. You really can't go wrong with anything you choose at Ken's. They give you a ton of homestyle food for a great price! My favorites are the fried zucchini app, London Broil, New York Strip, and variety of pastas. The lasagna has a LOT of ground beef so if you're not a huge meat lover, I'd recommend one of the other pasta dishes. The fish is always a sure thing as well! read more
