Free to walk the grounds plus there's a free history exhibition on the main floor. Period guided tours of the structure are available for a nominal fee. It's also the jumping off points for periodic 1-hour boat tours of the lake (€15)-we reco lily of Killarney-nicer boat) or a junket out to the ruined monastery on a small island that was the seat of learning. Fascinating and worth a stop.

There is a sign outside the ruins telling the story of them, but there is no mention of the stone so you wouldn't know how old it is unless you learned about it elsewhere. There was some trash inside the ruins so it's obvious that kids hang out there and make a mess, but I'd like to hope that they pick up the area regularly. There are lots of older gravestones in the cemetery the church ruins are a part of, so take some time and wander the rows if you can. Just remember to be respectful! There is parking nearby but it is also very easy to walk to the cemetery. The gates are open during the day and it's free to go through.

There's a vistors' centre attached which I did not visit because I walked out to Blennerville early in the morning.

This was a delightful road trip with beautiful ocean views the whole way, adorable coastal towns,…read moreand plenty of fluffy Irish sheep. We did the whole Ring of Kerry drive in a day since we were in a hurry, but ideally, you would come out and stay a few days enjoying the towns and scenery. The majority of the towns are quite small, so be sure to plan your stops where they are expecting tourists. Otherwise, it's just sheep and quaint country homes! Roads are quite narrow and dangerous. Be sure you give plenty of time to drive carefully. They are usually two lane with oncoming traffic, but the road is only big enough for one car, and there's lots of blind corners.

We rented a car and the driving especially a ring of kerry was scary. Highly recommend you do much research of what stops are worth doing. I liked 3 ladies stop and torc falls. Definitely wear non slippery comfortable shoes. Liked the abbey ruins and quick look outside formal house near the ruins. It was cold windy and miserable so boat trips were not of interest. Kerry cliffs are gorgeous but be prepared for the wind ..chin straps on hats are a must. Biggest disappointment was the rock circle .. that was waste of time. We took drinks and snacks but there are a few towns to stop and eat. Getting ice in Europe is Tricky... but we took a small collapsible cooler. Their cheese is nice so might pack cheese slicer and crackers. Hope you can do skellig ring and Dingle ... personally I don't care about castles ... Europe is covered with them but the scenery and colorful buildings . Landscape looks like green quilt.. all shades and a billion sheep.

My partner and I took a boat out to Innisfallen Island after visiting Ross Castle today. The boat…read moreride cost €15 cash per person. You can book in advance online, which we did, but it was cancelled the morning of due to it being an in-service day so we paid cash in person instead. The ride itself took about 20 minutes and our guide Mike was very nice and knowledgeable. He told us all about the island and its history and pointed out some points of interest to us. He gave us tips about making the most of our time at the island and when we arrived he helped us into the docks and then left us to our own devices. We were the only people on the island so it was incredibly peaceful. When you arrive you see the abbey where the monks practiced. It's ruins now of course, but it was built in the 11th century and you can tell it was strong then. The island was raided many times over the years when it was occupied so there isn't much in terms of archaeological finds. There is also a building where the monks prayed that has a very old cross in it. People seem to leave coins there, perhaps in prayer or asking for blessings. There's a separate building for where the monks used to sleep. You can head away from the buildings and take a nice nature walk if you want, and you might even get to see some deer! If you're into geocaching, there's a cache over on the NW side of the island too. This is a fantastic spot that doesn't seem to be super well-known to tourists, so I absolutely recommend it. It is worth the time and the cost!
