Perhaps it was a mistake to tell him upfront I wanted only a one time consultation, so maybe he's more professional when on a retainer. The first reason: He seemed judgemental, which is something you don't expect when paying a lawyer to be on your side. There were a few things that gave me this impression, but for one example, when I brought up a mental health issue that I thought might affect my case, he assumed I was making it up and cautioned me against "lying in court". The second reason: I made it clear to Mr. Fehrle that this was my first exposure to the legal system and that other than my own reading I was completely ignorant on the matter. Being the utter novice that I am I went in with some basic questions hoping he'd draw on his 20+ years in the profession to shed some light on a complicated situation in a way that Google searches couldn't. He answered each one in a sentence or two and I felt like I had to coax him into expanding further. Laypeople depend on professionals to help them ask the right questions and fill in blanks they're not even aware of. Mr. Fehrle seemed far more interested in ticking questions off a list than helping me understand what I was up against or what I might expect. Mr. Fehrle doesn't charge the highest rates in the city, but if you're not able to spend thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on a lawyer I'd recommend finding someone else.
