Came here for a late date night. It's on the 50th floor of The National. You take an elevator up to the 49th floor and they walk you up to Kessaku. It's a beautiful and elegant cocktail lounge. It has great cocktails and sushi was impeccable. It is fancier so they request you dress to impress. The view is amazing and the ambiance is delightful. The service is top notch as well. It was a little too dark to take pictures so I have nothing to show for it. But trust me!! read more

When we arrived all the tables were full and we were escorted to the bar to hang out while we waited for our table. The bar was packed and shared space with the dinning area. Let's say if all the chairs at the bar is taken and 6 people are standing behind the chairs - you will be in someone's personal space. HOWEVER, even with how snug it is, somehow they managed to make this place so vibey you don't really feel like your personal space is occupied by another person waiting for their table. Music choice was fantastic!! Ok DJ!!! The view is incredible because of how high up we are! (Try to get a seat by the window) which adds to the "SPECIAL" Staff is wonderful, Eric Simmons the beverage director seemed to greet tables and we enjoyed his hospitality. I recommber the spicy salmon roll as its some of the best and freshest sushi ive ever had and it will melt in your mouth - also, I must compliment this amazing host (who wore the skeleton earrings) she was such a clear communicator and helped my partner and I understand why the table was delayed and where we were in the due to be seated! We go to uchi for most special occasions and date nights because it's the best sushi and best overall experience with consistently amazing staff we've found in Dallas. But because we have been so often I wanted to try something new for our wedding anniversary. The views are what sold me to try kessaku. it's on us for not checking, but there is a dress code. My husband wore a nice sweater with slacks but you need a collar to dine here. So my husband had to use one of their blazers over his sweater and was hot and uncomfortable the whole time; it just felt a bit antiquated and pretentious. Then the staff just seemed to have that same air about them; just not that kind and a bit disinterested. The drinks were decent and sushi was above average but highly expensive and nowhere near the quality and flavors we find at uchi. These views from your table and the walkway behind the bar are some of THE best views in Dallas. That in itself will make your visit worthwhile. Located on the 50th floor of the First National Bank Tower, just above the Monarch Restaurant (also a great spot to check out but it deserves it's own review), just pass the complimentary champagne toast when you walk in there from doors and catch an elevator to enjoy great drinks and good small plate options, sushi, and more. This place operates much like a speakeasy as opposed to a full restaurant, but you can enjoy a beautiful meal as well. However, don't expect a big menu or cheap prices. Truthfully, I felt as though the food prices were a tiny bit steep for the limited breadth of the menu, and would have expected more of a "Los Angeles sugar fish" experience, where they offer incredible handmade sushi that is created in front of you for more of a tasting experience. That being said, the sushi was still good and came out of the back surprisingly quickly. My Food Order: Tuna & Crab Roll - $31 How were the craft cocktails you ask? Phenomenal! They incorporate some unique and well structured set of ingredients that really compliment each other and do not leave you wanting.. absolutely delicious. Ever had a drink made with goat cheese? You should. Where to even begin? Kessaku is incredible. We came upstairs to Kessaku for dinner after having Golden Hour at Monarch on the floor below. Kessaku was much smaller with a more intimate environment. I immediately noticed that due to the smaller size, no matter where you are seated in the restaurant, you have a great view of the Dallas skyline. We were seated in the middle of the room and I still was able to enjoy the night skyline all evening. We were greeted with a glass of sake before ordering drinks. I got an unfiltered aviation which was delicious. I love Aviations and this was a spinoff with sake mixed in. The flavor held true to that of a typical aviation. We also tried the sake with the gold flowers in it and it was very smooth. We ordered the scallop roll, jalapeño himachi roll, and the highlight: the king crab roll. When I tell you the king comes with a side of warm butter that they drizzle over the top... it's decadent. Absolutely incredible. No soy sauce needed for this roll. It was so good that after we finished, we then ordered a second one... oops. Before leaving, our waitress brought us each a juicebox of sake. It was a very neat surprise and we're still talking about how unique of a concept it is. I wish I could remember our waitress' name to give her a special shoutout as she was top tier. Kessaku is a speakeasy that sits on the 50th floor of the Thompson Hotel. It's purposefully hidden, but when you find it, you'll be exposed to an incredible view of Dallas with an ultra-cool interior to match. Come here for the drinks and the views of the city and people. My Overall Rating - 4 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Facility, Return) Atmosphere - There is no outside sign for Kessaku. Instead, there's a door to the stairwell with Japanese characters that you walk through. The stairwell is well lit, and the floors steps are covered with bamboo (not concrete). Then when you finally make it up the stairs and open the door, you find it. And boy is it amazing. It's a beautiful cocktail bar with walls wrapped in velvet, seats with pillows that are meant to draw you close to your date, and plenty of people to watch. Those flying solo can make their way to the back of the bar. But the best part of Kessaku is the view. If you don't get a seat by the window, don't worry, there's a pathway that goes around the entire hotel. You get to see ALL of Dallas. It's spectacular. 1 Star Service - This was my first cocktail bar as the restrictions from the pandemic were being lifted, but I was surprised to see no one was wearing a mask, not even my server. Went there for my birthday. We made a detailed reservation in advance for 8:30 on a Thursday. When we got there they made us wait almost an hour to be seated. I had to bug the hostess several times; who knows how long it would have been to get a table otherwise? Food was very pricey and the only dish I thought was worth it was the tuna tartare. The king crab nigiri was ok. Had fancy ingredients but tasted much like any other crab nigiri. Our third dish did not arrive on time. It took 45 minutes to come out and only AFTER we asked to cancel and pay. We had ordered the Hamachi with jalapeño and it was disappointing. Presentation was EXTREMELY sloppy, rice to fish ratio was off, and rice had far too much vinegar. For context, our local revolving sushi place does a better job with this type of roll and charge us $4 for it. Not worth $21. Waitress was rude, no one remembered our occasion, and then to top it all off, the bill came with a mystery $19 added charge, which I believe is automatic gratuity for a party of 2. View is nice but the experience was maddening. This is not the high end place they pretend to be. We went for tacos after this at a local Mexican shop and that food was far better at $3.50 a taco. Such a pretty view at sunset. Now, to the sushi We ordered everything Alaskan King Crab. King crab nigiri, king crab roll and tuna ceviche. You can taste the freshness of the crab, super flaky, sweet, juicy and drawn butter to dip! I wish we ordered more, I could eat the whole thing by myself. SUSHI WITH THE VIEWS - seriously though, the views from the window seating show the best of Dallas skyline! I came here for sushi dinner with a friend during its opening week and was in love with all the sushi we tried and the service was exceptional! Below is my breakdown: Ambiance: Once you've entered into Kessaku, you feel like you've walked into some upscale lounge with all the silk/velvet aesthetic and low ceilings with low lighting as well. The place can get loud once it's packed esp with the DJ, but it was still really enjoyable. It is a little harder to sit in the couches for a long time, so def recommend the chair seating. 4/5 Service: You start off entering into Thompson Hotel and are greeted by staff offering you free drinks while you wait in line to go to the elevator (only 2 elevators that take you to the 49th floor so I can take some time). Once you've made it to the 49th floor, the hosts at Monarch will check you in and lead you to the stairs to the 50th floor for Kessaku ( I don't think there's any other option besides stairs to get up here though which can be an inconvenience for some people). Once you've finally made it to Kessaku entrance, your host takes you to your table (oh and I made reservations in advance and requested window seating). Once seated, a waiter will come over to go over the menu and help you decide on what to get. Throughout the dinner, our waiter checked up on us after each dish was brought out and made sure we were fully satisfied. Our water glasses were always full and our used plates were always cleaned right away. They also accommodated us with mock tails and didn't charge the usual alcoholic price like most restaurants. Best service I've seen in a long time! 5/5 Food: The only options for food are sushi - nigiri, sashimi, or sushi rolls. There's no tempura or and seaweed salad or anything but sushi to eat, so if you thought there might be other options, don't be surprised. The sushi rolls we had were all delicious! My favorite was the king crab roll with the side of butter and we ended up ordering it 2x! All the other rolls were tasty but the kung crab one definitely stood out. The queen nigiri was good, but nothing special... I know it's a Michelin chef restaurant so I was expecting something more creative done with the nigiri. It was super fresh, but yeh nothing too exciting. Make sure to grab a complimentary glass of champagne as you walk in and make your way to the elevator. Once you get to the 49th floor, you will go up the stairs to Kessaku. What to order: Hamachi Ponzu Tuna Tartare (my absolute fav item) King Crab Roll Hamachi Jalapeño Roll Although the menu only has 14 items including apps, everything you get is perfect! They also have a fantastic selection of sake which is typically my go-to when I'm eating sushi! The restaurant doesn't have dessert, but you can ask to get a table at Monarch (one floor down) and get it there! Trust me you want to do this + it gives you an excuse to grab another cocktail! I recommend the chocolate cake with banana & peanut butter. The views are obviously stunning at the restaurant but I recommend going down to the 49th floor and in the women's bathroom (1st stall) you will get the best view! Just a little secret only for you! To me the food was OK, it's not a place where you are going to eat and be full. It's just a place to have a cocktail and maybe have a snack, at least that was my impression. There was not much food on the menu to pick from. Although the drinks were very delicious. It is super dark in the area, so keep that in mind as well. Came here on a Wednesday to celebrate a birthday and it was a great experience... they offer complimentary valet, the bar is on the 50th floor of the National, you are greeted with complimentary champagne when you enter the building, you take the elevator to the 49th floor (another bar called monarch), and then take the stairs to kessaku. They open at 6 and we had a 6:15pm reservation, there were a few people there but by 6:30 the place was filling up and luckily we had a table by the window! We were only going to have 1 drink but ended up ordering sushi and another round. We got the spicy tuna roll and it was the best sushi I've ever had! For drinks we tried the unfiltered aviation which was pretty good but not my favorite, the desert flower which was surprisingly different but I really liked it, and our favorite the fromage noir- if you like goat cheese at all GET IT! It's not gross, it's so so good, we ordered 2. Also, not sure if it was because we were there for a birthday, but we told the waitress we had a dinner reservation somewhere else so we weren't eating much, and she asked if she could bring us one more dish and surprised us with the hamachi ponzu and didn't charge us for it which was so so nice! Ouch - it pains me to write this because I was SO excited to surprise my bf with craft drinks & a fantastic view of Dallas. It just wasn't what we expected. Made a reservation for Friday @ 9PM, put my credit card on the line for $25/pp -- NBD. Arrived just before the rez and took a seat at the bar to wait for our table. Most of the seating is large booths down the middle of the room, and there are only about 6 or 7 two-top tables along the window (with the clearest views). *There is an observation deck that you can visit/walk around, but no official seating in that section* Anyway, the server came to seat us in the booth/middle section and we just weren't feeling it -- too loud, too crowded, too far from the windows -- so we stayed at the bar and proceeded to have some drinks. The bartender was attentive & friendly. We could KINDA see the views but were craning our necks to do so... and it felt awkward to be staring at other diners who were seated at the window. Without the views, I didn't really understand why we were sitting at a dark & busy bar paying $22 for each cocktail. We proceeded to watch multiple groups of two arrive after us and elect to wait for the two-top tables along the window, which was an option not conveyed by the hostess or bartender. If we had known that were possible, we would've held off and waited because many of those tables turned during the 9PM-10PM hour. I assumed (incorrectly) that the restaurant wouldn't accommodate these requests, as literally everyone walking in wants to sit at the windows. But apparently you CAN tell the server you'll hold off for the two-top with the better view. Overall... The cocktails are decent, though sweet; The atmosphere is loungey but a little loud & quite chaotic; The views are fun, though infinitely better if you're seated AT the window; The hostesses and bartenders are friendly and helpful, but be sure to ask for what you want/need; Didn't try the food... it looked good but the portions are probably a bit small for my taste. Visited Kessaku for drinks on 5/9/24 around 730 pm and I had high expectations because I was coming from Monarch,a sister restaurant a floor below which was a beautifully designed space. I'm not sure if it was the time of day but I didn't find it as inviting or upscale given the location. It is pretty small restaurant and the wrap around deck is not a part of the restaurant I would recommend an observation deck for better views of downtown. Drinks- 10/10 Albeit overpriced due to location they were crafted well. (I recommend Woolworth nearby for inexpensive craft drinks) Service- 6/10 Bartendar was ok but just didn't seem like she wanted to be there ambiance 6/10- maybe the late evening is a better vibe? Overall not impressed and I also found it off putting that the staff and what seemed to be the manager taking shots at the bar. In an upscale restaurant, you would not expect to see this. read more

They have valet parking. This restaurant on the 50 floors so when you going the elevator they got 49 when you go out 49 so your need go up stairs. The food 8/10 but I love the view. Service so good and really kind. read more

We had a fabulous night there yesterday. Super drinks (had the One Punch and a great saki). We went with server Bam's (might not be the spelling) recommendations for the sashimi and sushis - super impressed. Bam was very attentive and personable. The view is awesome.
