From the moment I spoke with Jerry, he was courteous and very helpful. He patiently answered all the questions I had about the actual trip. He really put me at ease about the whole experience. I was a bit more worried about booking something online having never been to Ketchikan before but in the end, everything turned out wonderful. So once I decided to book, Jerry took down half of the fee as a deposit and told us he would meet us at the port where we docked. On our arrival date, Jerry was right on time and off we went! I can't say enough about how fun he made the trip. Not only did we catch A LOT of fish, we had a great time chatting with him too. Snacks and drinks are provided too which is pretty cool. If I ever head back to Ketchikan, I'll be calling Jerry for sure.

Over his 30+ years in Ketchikan, he's made over 3,000 fishing expeditions. He knows the waters, he knows the rules and he knows how to catch fish. (See photo.) 2. Dan and Troy are the most ethical guys in Ketchikan. Dan wasn't about to let me keep my 24" King Salmon, no matter how much I begged. (The minimum keeper is 28".) They respect nature...on the way back to the docks, we were coming up on a pod of Orcas. One of the local open hull fishing boats came screaming in front of us, crossed our bow and headed straight towards the Orcas. Dan actually started veering AWAY from the Orcas to give them room. God then rewarded the good guys, because the Orcas swam diagonally towards our wake and away from the idiots. (See photo.) 3. Not all boats are created equally. For lack of a better description, Dan's boat is like the SS Minnow (think Gilligan's Island.) It's safe and comfortable. There were SIX people fishing on the idiot's open hull boat! Here a bonus reason...Troy (the business manager) went fishing with us, so that we could fish with an extra line (one line per person.) The 4 hours went by really fast, because I enjoyed the friendly conversation with Dan and Troy.

Our cruise ship was 3 hours late to dock in Ketchikan due to stormy weather. Fortunately, Captain Dan waited for us and he even picked us up where our cruise ship docked in Ward Cove. This saved us a long shuttle bus ride to town. We were so thankful that Captain Dan worked with our late arrival and was still able to take us on our 8 hour fishing trip. I guess he worked late that day. We enjoyed Captain Dan and his fishing stories. We all caught salmon and he took our fish in for processing and arranged the FedEx delivery to our house in Seattle. They both had a good time, however make sure to fully research what the $200/person fee covers. There are only 4 fishing poles and they book 6 people. You pick a number and you get to fish that pole and you rotate every 15 minutes. Also, make sure to get in writing how much it will be to process, pack and ship your fish. They only caught one fish. We were charged an additional $255 for 5lbs of salmon. My husband called to ask how much the overnight shipping was, it was $90. Totally fine. That means it was $33/pound to process the fish.

This meal was a bit of a mixed bag, though more about presentation and delivery than about food. Our group was met outside by the food and beverage manager, who looked very proud of himself and his position. He welcomed us but then went into a lecture about how the seating will be arranged and not to get lost after the meal going to look at their waterfall because people have gotten lost in the past... The seating was a cluster. F&B Man started yelling out, "Do I have a party of 9?" If no takers, he then went down to the next number and so on until we got a winner and that's how we were seated. Now obviously I am not a professional seater or restaurant host, but given that this excursion was signed up for quite some time ago and the bus driver contacted the restaurant earlier in the day to advise of the number of kids meals and food allergy/sensitivity guests they would have, couldn't they also ask the driver to provide the number of guests and how many in each party? Our friend doesn't do seafood and he shared that with the bus driver. He was served a bacon cheeseburger; no inquiry about if he ate beef and/or pork, or how he would want it prepared... Thankfully he said it was great! At any rate, we all got seated like good little cattle and were served their Taste of Alaska; halibut with lemon, crab cake, salmon and some rice. I thought everything was quite good, though the salmon was a bit on the drier side. Dessert was a berry cobbler that was nothing to write home about--could have used some ice cream to pep it up a bit.

The restaurant is classy and looks exactly like an Alaskan lodge should look--with huge picture windows looking out onto the Tongas Narrows. The atmosphere is spot on. The menu seems extremely limited. We were there the first week in September so maybe they were cutting down the menu in view of the seasonal closing coming soon. I had a Ribeye which was $60+ and was kinda average. Very fatty, even for a ribeye. The sides (whipped potatoes and carrots) were good, but kind of skimpy. My wife wound up sending back her tomato soup which had some undercooked chickpeas. The good was good, but we were not wowed. Maybe it was just a bad night late in the season. I know that our local friends consider this to be one of the nicest restaurants in Ketchikan. I would try it again next year.
