Great track!!! Generally open to the public on most days. It can get busy at times with many run groups or athletic teams getting together on different schedules but the company keeps you motivated. When people think of the landmarks in San Francisco, they usually point out the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, Twin Peaks, & Alcatraz. However. "Kezar Stadium" is usually not brought up in conversations these days considering this place isn't frequented as much as previous decades. Located at the southeastern corner of Golden Gate Park off of Lincoln Way and Stanyan St., this historic multi-purpose stadium that is used for has been in operation ever since breaking ground way back in 1925. Since it was a little early for dinner, I came here on a whim during the afternoon of Friday 11/29/2024 at around 5:00pm. I parked nearby on Lincoln Way but there is a dedicated lot that is adjacent to the main entrance. Much to my surprise, this entire stadium is open to the public while the standard stadium hours are from 6:30am-10pm. What I particularly liked is how clean the grounds are here with an excellent running/jogging track, well-manicured natural grass on the field, a fully functional scoreboard w/public restrooms, and a respectable amount of seating on both sides of the field. From its long history, this stadium once seated up to 60,000 fans from 1925 until 1989; most notably the San Francisco 49ers that used it from 1946 to 1970. There has also been numerous collegiate games held here as well as track & field, rugby, lacrosse, soccer, and much more. The previous stadium was demolished in 1989 and downsized and rebuilt to its current setup that only seats a fraction of what it once seated at around 10,000 fans. These days, the stadium still holds graduation ceremonies, soccer matches, and various high school football games. All in all, "Kezar Stadium" is a piece of San Francisco history as it is located in a much quieter part of the city and away from all the hustle and bustle. All in all, I encourage everyone to check this place out if you haven't already. The grounds are kept very clean while the entire layout (even though this is a very densely populated city) to be spacious and open. My rating, an above average four stars. read more

Kezar is in the heart of golden Hate Park. It's San Francisco parking, can be very difficult, especially during an event. I attended my granddaughter's graduation. We opted to pay parking $15. You pay at exit hang on to that ticket you are giving it entry . This is the original stadium, where the 49ers played football back in the day. The grounds are maintained very nicely. Plenty of staff on hand. The ceremony was on point. Happy to be back in the city by the bay and great memory to come to Kezar Stadium. read more

I have come here a few times in the past few weeks to get a good work out in. Since the lockdown started, there are no gyms open so I was running outside and doing some at home workouts. Kezar is a blessing, it is huge, tons of bleachers / stairs, and the restrooms are open. You can run the inner track if you want something softer for your knees, or the outer track. The large outer track on top is about 1/3 miles. There are more people here training on the weekdays than on weekends. It is easy to practice social distancing, since this spot is huge. There are also security guards walking around, to ensure that people are maintaining social distance. read more

Track Tuesdays are fun here at Kezar! I'm such a slow runner but coming out to Track Tuesdays helps me with my speed and pushes me harder than any other workouts I do. The best part is running with my friends who motivates me and pushes me harder than I push myself. So, whether you're a pro or a newb you will find so many different runners on this track supporting each other! Everyone who comes out here will get an amazing workout. a great venue that serves as a multi-purpose event center! conveniently located at the southeast corner of golden gate park in the heart of san francisco. in the past, football games, soccer matches, track meets and other special events have taken place inside this stadium. i recently came to attend a high school graduation and this stadium felt massive in relation to the number of graduates, faculty and guests attending! entry was thru the southeast gate, so it was a bit of walk to get to the northwest part of the stadium, where the graduation ceremony was taking place. while there was plenty of seating, there was absolutely zero shade, esp @ high noon, and it was an unusually warm day in sf, so it was pretty warm and somewhat uncomfortable sitting there for 2 hrs. restrooms were conveniently located at the top level of where we sat, and there were also water fountains available (good for a warm day!) street parking is available along kezar dr, lincoln way, frederick st but be sure to check parking limitations so that you don't get a ticket! i lucked out and parked in a 3hr space on kezar dr so not only save $$ but had a short walk to the main gate. there were several lots offering discounted parking on this day, and there is are several parking structures nearby. read more

I drive here with my family to watch my nephew play for Santa Cruz High in a basketball game versus Stuart Hall. The drive here from Santa Cruz was really nice. The cityscape in SF especially at night is really breathtaking. Arriving to the stadium though presented an issue of parking. Unless you pay for parking, you'll most likely have to drive around to find a spot. Although once we parked and walked into the stadium I was actually impressed. The gym style wasn't the typical stadium seating. The aisles were like ramps which kind of blended into the bench style seats for the audience. The home team had tons of home spirit which created an electric atmosphere. Stay Hall win the game with a last second three point shot. read more

I love this stadium, a call back to another era when some football stadiums were much more intimate, not these gigantic theaters relegated to the outskirts of the city. Despite its age, Kezar Stadium is beautifully maintained and used by lots of locals. When I was there, there were several groups of schoolchildren and 2-3 adults running the track and keeping fit. And every time I pass by the stadium, I can't help but think of that scene in "Dirty Harry" and marvel how much bigger and somewhat intimidating and sinister it looked on screen. Kezar Pavilion was built in 1924 adjacent to Kezar Stadium on the southeast corner of Golden Gate Park. Not too shabby-lookin' gymnasium for a 91 year old venue, if you ask me. It was home of the University of San Francisco Dons and even the University of Santa Clara Broncos for a brief period of time. It's probably more famous as the home of the Bay Bombers of the original Roller Derby fame from 1961 to 1973. I would love to have witnessed all the shenanigans that occurred here during that time, especially in the locker rooms. Not only basketball and roller derby, it's also been used for boxing, pro-wrestling (fake wrestling), real wrestling, numerous indoor sports and concerts. It seats about 4,000 on wooden benches and it has a very intimate atmosphere. That intimate atmosphere is magnified during the Pro-Am season during the summer. This is the only place where you can watch professional, semi-pro and NBA players up close without paying for a penny. You can also catch rising stars like Aaron Gordon, Jason Kidd and more before they went on to college and became legends. That list of players keeps growing and growing every summer. Due to the league's open roster policy; you can expect a superstar-caliber player play on any given night. If you're lucky, that player could be Damian Lilliard, Tyreke Evans, Jeremy Lin, Mitch Richmond, Matt Barnes and Baron Davis to name a few that have set foot on its hallowed grounds. And when all the stars are lined up right, you may catch Steph Curry suiting up and shooting threes from Half Moon Bay. My new fitness guru introduced me to this stadium just recently and not only can you run the track or do push ups or lunges or squats or sit ups or yoga right on the grass/ground/asphalt (at the top of the bleachers on the outer ring of the stadium along the gates) you can basically bring a trx and do an all body workout right here! You don't even need a gym!! Security seems really solid (feels very safe) and it's been pretty clean as far as I could tell! The bleachers and part of the track do look a little worn down but doesn't seem to be a huge problem. I was worried about parking the first few visits but during the times I come it hasn't been a problem at all (however, school is not in session right now!! I'm sure I'll eat my words when that time comes). I see people of all ages come here to run or work out. Weekend mornings, they seem to like coming around 10 or 11 but didn't look like the track ever got crowded. Most people have been very nice and considerate with each other. read more

I hate running. That's why I only run on warm days. That's why I only run on flat surfaces. That's why I'm not a true athlete -- I'm a wimp and I know it. But Kezar stadium makes running more bearable: the surface is easier on the knees, it's fully open so I can get a lot of sun (well, relatively speaking!) and just being around people who are crazy runners and go hardcore training up and down the bleachers is ENOUGH to make me feel like an athlete. Context: Evenings around 6-9PM and early mornings around 8-9AM. This is specifically for running on the track. Not for anything else. Location: I like the location. Its on Stanyan, its by the park. Its nice! Its a great local spot for those living in the Inner Sunset or Cole Valley. Hours/Lighting: I ran on the track and its open to the public which is great. I rather run on a track than through the park because its easier on the joints. The lights were on for awhile. They were on at least until 10PM which is the latest I have been there. Its not full stadium lighting, but its more than enough. When I'm tired of running in a circle and run up and down the bleachers. Quality: Hey, its a free resource! I can't really complain. Its a bit on the older end of things. The track has some ragged edges, etc. But its nice to know that there's a safe option. Ladies just don't go running by yourself late at night (you should buddy up whenever you go out! That's just a general rule). Anyway, you are not allowed on the grass though. There are signs posted everywhere telling people to stay off the grass. I honestly don't have much to complain about because 1) its public/free 2) it is open when I want it to be open. I do have one thing, but this is pure personal experience. I saw people bring in cases of beer and then line up in a starting line. Then, suddenly when the race started, they all chugged a can of beer and ran one lap as fast as they could and kept drinking beers every lap until they finished a full mile. I asked them what they were doing and it was exactly what it sounded like, its called, "The Beer Mile." I saw A LOT of vomiting that day. It was pretty hysterical, but if that's your thing apparently you can do that at Kezar. I feel bad for the poor person who had to clean it up. I apologize on behalf of these hilarious group of people. read more

Not only did the San Francisco 49ers play here for over two decades before moving to Candlestick Park, but Kezar has played host to many iconic rock bands like Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Santana and more. It was even featured in the movie Dirty Harry. Now a days, since it was demolished and rebuilt in 1989, the Stadium hosts high school football games, Lacrosse games and is used for folks who like to run around it's large track. Even though it's been about 25 years since Kezar was a fully functional Stadium, its still cool to visit a place that's hosted many memorable football games and concerts. No lie - Kezar is one of my favorite spots in the city to workout. I hate running. I think it's boring, repetitive, and whenever I'm doing it I'm always thinking about how I'd rather be doing something else. But when I'm at Kezar, my mindset is different. No matter how I'm feeling that day, it's always exciting to be on that field. Being only about a mile from my apartment, I can jog there, maybe do a few laps, and then do my all-time favorite cross-training activity: running stadium stairs. It's also a great place to do stretch, sit-ups, push-ups or run sprints, and that's why I love it - you can do it all. Not to mention for being an outdoor track stadium that's open to the public, it's a really beautiful place, and it's an added bonus that the city makes an effort to do the little things like maintain the grass and keep the ground clean. read more

Living in San Francisco for 24 years, I've entered Kezar Stadium only once and it was the month before my middle school graduation. My homeroom teacher Mr. Jay Cunningham suggested we volunteer to help out with the special olympics. But of course, this choice was optional. I actually enjoyed the environment in Kezar Stadium. It is in the Southeast corner of Golden Gate Park. If you intend to drive there, be prepared that at certain times you might have to spend some time circling around for street parking that is. The best alternative is arrange for someone to drive you or take public transpotation. One of the easily accessible bus line is MUNI route 71. read more

I joined the KRR officially in November of 2007, but didn't make it to a track work out until I made running faster a New Years Resolution. Since January I have been running around a track Wednesday nights at 6:45. Attendance ranges from about 12-25 people in all levels of speed and abilities, although I would say, the majority seem to be more experienced runners, who have competed, or participated in running events, marathons, half marathons, tris, and even running their best 5 or 10K . Typical work outs range in speed, and distances on the track and end up being between 3.5-5 miles each time. I have found I am not the only person who has found the first work out to be the hardest one they have done. Track workouts are designed by Coach Joe, who started the group about 8 years ago, and probably has missed less than 10 work outs in that entire time. A weekly email is sent out through Yahoo groups which includes an inspirational quote, and additionally shout outs to members of the groups about their running accomplishments, and their personal milestones. (Babies, marriages, etc.) Workouts are ended with a beer or three at Kezar Pub, and occasionally Finnegans when Kezar is just too crowded. The perfect place for pace training. A lot of marathon runners train here. Part of marathon training is speed training. The routine goes similar to this: 1. Stretch legs very lightly 2. 10 Jumping Jacks (wake up the heart) 3. Do 4 50 yard sprints (to stretch the larger leg muscles) 4. Jog 4 laps slowly 5. Then walk around a lap 6. Run 4 laps at a fairly fast effort (80-90% maximum effort) 7. walk around a lap. 8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 3-4 times. 9. Jog four laps slowly. The primary focus is to try to have identical lap times at the same at a fast running pace to learn how to manage pacing. The light jogs ultimately end up being the marathon pace to use. If you continue practicing this, over time, your jogs will become faster and hence you increase the likelihood of having a personal best marathon time. In marathon running, pacing is essential. This track is perfect for such training. If you have any of an assortment of runner's injuries, this track is the perfect place to rehabilitate yourself. I moved to SF not long ago and run into this gem (for those of us who are runners) by accident. It is perfect for training and there is a lot of people that run there. It has a great atmosphere. If you run at 3-4pm, you will mostly find college students running. If you get there at 6pm, you will find a lot of running clubs. All of them serious runners. Be careful if you run on a sunny day, because even though the thermometer could register a cold day, the sun and no shade make you feel you are in the middle of the summer. Two things to be cautious about. 1) even though the website says they open at 5am, they really open at 5:30 or so. 2) Sometimes they organize events and close the stadium. I've tried training here a few times, but I will not be back. First off, get the times right, Kezar. If you say you're open at 5AM, don't make me wait until 6AM to open. I made the effort to get up at an ungodly hour to get there, so can you. Second, there are WAY too many people who come here. You go on any given day, at any given hour and it's always crowded. It certainly makes training tough for the serious-minded athlete. Lastly, people with no common sense. If you're going to have a track meet, don't park yourselves in the middle of the track lanes to warm up. The people consistently running by should be your first clue. MOVE! Also, why do people who are dressed in hiking attire choose to walk in track lanes when they could go for a walk anywhere else? It's hard enough to find space to run without obstacles, please don't make it harder. The only positive thing I can say is that the track, itself, is nice, but the production it takes to use it is not worth it. SF, please build another track in the city. Until then, I'll go elsewhere. read more

I watched my cousin play here for Fresno Fuego against the SF semi-pro woman's league. They won :) My suggestion is to plan to spend a few minutes looking for parking. My late grandpa used to take my uncle to that place when the latter was a kid...and now my uncle is taking me there time and time again. It's a pretty good park, where you get to bring your dog (and have that dog play with other dogs), walk around the Golden Gate Park nearby, plant a community garden, go to the stadium nearby, etc. I highly recommend it! read more
