Listening to this station, is the soundtrack to keeping Austin Weird. Since it's all local volunteers, the music selections are as diverse as the music tastes in the Live Music Capitol of the World! Seriously, if you don't like the music here, just wait a little bit. Just like the weather in Texas! The DJs change out every few hours, and each one brings their own selection of weird music. You're not going to hear Top 40 on here. I like the fact that there's no real advertisements on this station. They're all public service announcements, and local issues that they talk about. The coolest thing about this station is that if you wanna get on the radio badly enough, they'll put you on the air, and provide the training on how to do it! KOOP's mission is "to engage, connect and enrich the whole community, including the underserved, through creating diverse, quality, educational music and news programming." They fulfill their mission!

I suppose up until that point, I just misunderstood the station. Especially the switch over to the UT station which seems to have a constant stream of kids talking about Star Wars. Anyways, back to KOOP. The community sponsored station is run by volunteers and it shows in their programming. They play what they like and they want everyone else to hear. Turn it on, then sit back and enjoy.

This is quite a unique radio network. This network is comprised of a series of broadcasts and…read morechannels/frequencies throughout south Texas. As you pass through the Eagle Ford Shale area, you can tune from affiliate to affiliate, all on the left hand side of the dial. However, that's the only left leaning thing about this conservative station. This station has a hard swerve to the right- still talking about Hillary's emails and Bengazi in 2020. They had a bit from Alex Jones, the conspiracy theorists who has been banned from Youtube for being too inflammatory. However, their country music selection is right on! They play all the greatest country hits from the 50's through about up to the 70's, so lots of high and lonesome songs. It's a perfect station if you're a conservative oil driver on the back roads of Texas. If you're having to explain why Alex Jones thinks Newtown was a hoax, it's less than perfect. My #1 complaint with this station is that it's not available on my smart speaker so I can't listen at home.

Follow that with the Best of the Beatles, a Beatles themed show that's been on the air for 25+ years. Next, the Hillbilly Hayride, where Hank Harrison spins the country and western hits of yesteryear. Next, the Blues Hour, which always makes me depressed. KSYM is incredible. They're always giving away tickets and albums. You can actually win these call in contests, because not as many people have discovered KSYM as opposed to one of those Clear Channel stations. It's great that they let the students pick the music. You can get some weird songs, but at least they're always fresh, and hip. I love you KSYM!

Ron U. (Disco Duck) and Larry E (El Toro Brovo). They are funny as shit and you can chat live with them and request some tunes. I can't name many Tejano bands, but, that's where Google comes in. I've just recently discovered that I actually like La Mafia! They're playing it right now!! It's clear that our two Yelpers come here and have a good ass time. Not sure what goes on in the studio but they appear to get drunk or get the munchies (ahem) and cut up and play some really good stuff including occasional disco. Yep disco and other stuff. You don't need to know how to speak Spanish or even Spanglish for that fact to enjoy the broadcast. I love all kinds of music and while living here in Texas I have grown quite fond of Tejano. But, like I said I need Google. Now I have Google and the Disco Duck and wild man Larry E. I love listening to their shows and try to catch them on their usual Friday afternoons. They play a lot of commercials, but do some good programming. Their country is less Nashville, and more Austin, highlighting artists from the Texas area. They play a lot of the classic country as well. The DJs take requests and give local weather and traffic updates throughout the day. The radio presentation is slick and professional, with nationally airing ads played regularly. They also hold the annual KokeFest, a celebration of KOKE. It's some big country bands! I enjoy how many of their songs are about drinking beer, trucks, and prison.

This station is on "The Other Side of the Dial" and plays some cool stuff. I appreciate the wide variety of music and diverse selections of tunes that they play. They've completely turned over control of this station to the students, and with the wide interests of students, comes a wide range of music from jazz in the mornings to death metal at night. These students don't really play the top 40 stuff, or the most popular stuff. Expect to hear obscure music, and probably never hear the same song twice. There's some NPR programming on here occasionally, but it seems that might just be filler for when a student is too hung over to make it in to the Monday morning shift. The best thing about being on the other side of the dial is that there aren't commercials! Just public service announcements about flooding, or friendly reminders not to drink bleach. Good info!

I was in Wimberly for a week visiting my Mamaw and I was looking for something other than Top 40, Pop-Country and Classic rock that dominates Texas Waves...and I found it in 89.9 KTSW...no frills auto djing going on here and playing great tunes one right after the other. The only downside to the auto-programming is that they don't tell you what song was justa playin', but that's no worries, because I was digging every tune. This was an Oasis on the dial and I'm going to start listening to it at work- it's that good.
