A few years ago I had found the Hawaiian tote bag here too for just $14. I walked into Joy gift shop n immediately noticed on the mannequin the light green Aloha blouse MADE IN HILO! wow how did this happen, I don't like made in China stuff unless I had no choice. It was also size xtra small that fitted me perfectly I bought 2, a light green n dark green with matching necklaces made of fake pearls, I wanted to buy the whole rack but all other colors were all size small that would only fit a whale! lol , they were proudly made by the same family since 1957! It's made of rayon which usually requires dry cleaning but the low price $40 n necklace only $5 made it worth it. They had all kinds of gifts n fashion jewelry I bought quite a few gifts for my grandkids. I don't understand why somebody would report this business as closed, it is 100% open n full of customers bc of very reasonable prices n huge selection of Aloha clothing for men, women n children. After a disaster with the movers who brought my stuff from California to Hilo (see my review of…read moreRoyal Hawaiian Movers for details), I had a bed and a futon that were, respectively, barely usable and unusable because the movers had lost critical pieces and couldn't put them back together properly. One attempted repair by a handyman the movers connected me with turned into a fiasco. In desperation, I turned to Iolani -- there not being a lot of furniture repair people in Hilo. Shanna saved the day. She repaired both items quickly, at shockingly reasonable prices. And she gave me a bit of useful info that, as a newcomer to the island, it would have taken me a while to figure out on my own. If Yelp let you give a business more than five stars, I would.

Later on, his wife asked if I wanted some water to drink and gave me a bottle of water right there and then! Das why I love my Hilo town. :) So full of aloha these people. The store is pretty expansive and takes up two large sections with a smaller sub-room in the back. He specialized in a lot of European and Hawaiian antiques and also performs restoration on some of the furniture pieces that come to him "less than desirable." A lot of the store is furniture antiques - tables, desk, chairs, display cases, etc. - but settled amongst these are smaller objects. Koa boxes, small ceramic figurines, koa bowls, dishes, etc. Prices will range depending on what you're looking for --- furniture started in the high hundreds on up. Keep in mind, that this isn't the Sally Store (Salvation Army store) or Goodwill and you're paying for items that rare/can't be found a whole anymore. Thus, each piece is priced accordingly. If you're interested in antique furniture, koa items, or local vintage Hawaiiana, I'd definitely recommend this place. There's free parking right in front of the store.

You'll know that the stuff is handmade when you get something from here. The owner Sharon is really sweet and will help you find something unique. She helped my brother put together some custom necklaces for gifts for his friends and they're definitely cooler and more affordable than the stuff in the tourist shops. I picked up some adorable sushi and nigiri beads for gifts as well. Seems sustainable as many beads are polished sea glass, clay, wood, and any ivory is cow bone. Didn't see any coral or dried sea critters! Yay! Don't get your friend another Hawaii keychain... Please. Just come here for something completely one-of-a-kind and support one of the few remaining independent craft stores around the town that hasn't been swallowed up by Walmart.
