Upon arrival we were shown to our room by the staff who are extremely friendly and accommodating. There were fresh flowers, chocolate and whiskey waiting for us in the room free of charge. In the evening we went downstairs to the bistro to have dinner and were welcomed by Ina (who I think runs the place with her husband). I had two starters for dinner (lovely mussles in a heavily white wine sauce and the goat cheese salad). I was more than satisfied and felt extremely taken care of. The rain was pouring outside and after dinner we relaxed in our room with the free whiskey. Excellent!!

Wendy and Hugh were very attentive hosts, and you can tell they are quite professional at running their establishment, and take care to think of things guests might need in advance. We had three people in our party so we got 2 rooms - Rooms 3, and 6. It's pretty clearly stated that Room 6 is more of an attic room, so it is another flight upstairs, and there is an angled ceiling/wall that you will have to maneuver around if you have more than 1 person staying there. That being said, both rooms were extremely lovely, and had fantastic views (Room 6 especially) of the harbor and Oban. Room 3 had a great bay window and was very spacious. Both beds were very comfortable, and everything was spotless and had all the amenities you would need (including USB port chargers - thank god). The house has a library with books on the area that are quite helpful for exploration, and best of all, it has a sizeable private parking lot that fits about 4 cars, if not more) - this was definitely a rarity amongst the houses and other B&Bs in the area, and thank god since I wouldn't want to have parked on this steep hill. Breakfast was fantastic, and had all the trimmings - everything in a traditional English breakfast, haggis, vegetarian options (I'd recommend the vegetarian haggis, and I'm not even vegetarian), yogurts, fresh fruit, porridge, and cereal. This is all in a nice little dining room, with even thoughtful bird books and binoculars put aside if you want to use. The only downside to this place is the return trip from the harbor center of Oban. Missing the gym while on vacay? Sad you haven't gotten a proper leg workout lately? Worried about the intense English breakfasts and fish & chips (& chips & chips) you've been consuming while on vacation? THEN STAY HERE AND ALLAY YOUR FEARS. Glenroy is super close to the harbor center...but as you will see, Oban is an intensely steep city. To quote Hugh "it's a 5 minute walk to town....a 15 minute walk back. Or a £3.50 taxi." (Really at the end of the day it's not bad - it just makes you rethink whether or not you really wanted to pop down the hill or not haha) Super recommend Glenroy Guest House (& Oban)!

This may be a good or a bad thing for some people, so let me explain a little more.. The rooms are all individual, well decorated and immaculately clean as would be expected from this type of place. Mine was quite spacious and had access from the garden aswell as the house. However, the rooms do not have keys.. it is assumed that all guests are of the honest variety, which I suspect would put some people off - however, for me I really didn't find this a problem. You can ask for a key, though this is apparently needed to be handded back the next day for the cleaner... why a duplicate couldn't be made I have no idea. So, first quirk. The Dining was an experience in a number of ways... The food was really fantastic for the kind of place this is, not quite michelin star level, but getting close.. I was very happy with the quality and variety of the menu and enjoyed this every evening. There aren't that many restaurants close, and I had a deal which included dinner in the price, so ate there every night, though if I went back, I would venture out elsewhere - just for variety. The next quirk is that this is a 'household' event.. each evening is a 'participation activity', smart dress expected, pre dinner drinks in the lounges with other guest, with dinner served to everyone at a specific time (and your choice of dinner submitted before 5pm, which was hard to do when trying to visit the furthest parts of the island), with after dinner drinks taken again in the lounge.. now I was travelling on my own on this trip photographing the local landscapes and wldlife, and felt that it could have been a little awkward for some folks - especially as the main type of guest seems to be couples. Though even one couple specifically mentioned they weren't a fan of this style. The other guests were very friendly, and I'm used to travelling (and thus dining) on my own with work so it didn't bother me that much, but be warned if this not your thing.. Another quirk :-) Did I mention how much I enjoyed the food? :-) Sadly the wifi was barely working whilst I was there, which was very frustrating, as there is also no mobile signal (so couldn't use Skype) - maybe a good thing for some people, though it's nice to get in touch with home from time to time.. The hosts were generally very friendly and accommodating - the only minor exception was a comment regarding the 'great deal' they had offered - especially for single occupancy.. (basically it was priced per person, which made it very well priced for me, though clearly they were expecting more). This was the only annoyance I had with the hospitality, as it wasn't necessary and isn't my problem if their pricing was wrong. The hotel itself is located perfectly near a loch, with easy access to the shore, and nice gardens to enjoy in the evening. So, a few quirks and a small annoyance or two, but overall I would recommend this hotel, with a few caveats regarding the style and approach (which will appeal to some but not others). The pricing I paid was great (£100 per night, incl. Dinner normally at £45 p/head) - the price I would have paid in a couple (double that price) would also be good for the service and food. The standard prices (up to £200 per night/room w/breakfast, + £45 p/head for dinner) is possibly a little on the steep side compared to other comparable quality hotels - though not massively and there aren't that many decent places on the island, so I would still consider staying there at these prices. So... Yes - very much recommended. Just be aware of the quirks (and don't let them put you off too much).

Lovely evening out as we spent the week at Tiree. The meal was so creative and very tasty! Great…read moreportions sizes. Steaks were so tender and flavourful, with a lovely pepper sauce. But best of all was how we were greeted. The hostess introduced herself by name. Then she asked each one of us ours. The kindness of the staff definitely will keep us coming back!

This room is spacious, has new good bathroom and a large, old bed where you can feel the springs. But the best is the view to the water! Plenty of storage space in the room with a large seating area and bay window with a view of the Sound of Kerrera. Breakfast is the typical OJ, fresh fruit, cereal and a fantastic fry up. Many alternatives are provided to Suit all tastes. The bathroom is spotless and has a generous shower cubicle. No bath in this room, but we were not here to lie in a bath, we were here to visit Oban! Thornloe is centrally located and within 2 minutes walk of George Street and the biz of the town. The place is impressive, spotless clean, well looked after, Eco-friendly and the perfect location for your stay in Oban. We celebrated our Second Wedding Anniversary at Thornloe and would definatley come back. To be honest, if I could rate Thornloe higher - I would without hesitation!!! To sum up in one line- "You get what you pay for"
