The bar is pretty old fashioned but the staff were friendly enough and the football wasn't too loud or annoying. The loos were a bit of a state though and definitely needed a spruce up, and had those weird little bugs flying around that you sometimes see at manky restaurants. So that was a bit gross. They have a local beer on tap as well as Edinburgh Three Hop and some regular beers like Kronenburg etc, plus a great bottle selection and even single malt whisky from Arran! The atmosphere during the rugby was great and the place was packed and lively like a Glasgow pub- you'd never have guessed you were on a remote Scottish isle (except maybe by the friendliness of the barstaff and punters- one guy helped me carry my pints to my table and another found me a spot at the bar to order from!) The food was really good too- we had haggis, neeps and tatties, the Arran cheeseboard, and some homemade pate with oatcakes. Delish! When we missed our last bus home the barstaff even helped us hitch a ride! Unbeatable service in my books. There's also a nice wee corner shop that sells arran-y type things (cheese, Arran gold liqueur etc) so you can pick up snacks and souvenirs on the way! The bus stop is also right outside- super convenient. Don't miss this place if you're going to Arran, especially in winter as not much else is open!

This was the best bed & breakfast experience I've ever had and ruined me for the rest of my trip. Andrew and Allison were the ideal innkeepers. Warm and friendly and amazingly accomodating. And if you're a whiskey lover, Andrew has a vast knowledge of whiskies. If you're going to Islay, I hope you like whiskey. I was booked for a single room and wow. King size bed and a room almost as large as my first apartment. And the bathroom, just gorgeous. Just a slight warning, if you're a shower singer, sound travels. I enjoyed a morning serenade from a couple of the Swedish guests on our tour. It was a nice way to wake up but not everyone is as willing to explore others' musical talents. Each morning, they set us up for our day of whiskey drinking with a full English breakfast (delicious) and the offer of a dram of whiskey. I passed for the fresh squeezed orange juice because I'm a giant lightweight. Our last night there, for a small fee, they provided us with delicious house made sushi, oysters and seared scallops. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. As much as I loved the whiskey tour, I would come back to Islay just to stay at Bowmore House. It's worth every penny.

The dining room was cosy and there were other diners but you didn't feel as though you were being overheard by anyone. The menu was extensive and I would highly recommend the monkfish. At the end of the evening we had a lovely stroll along the side of the loch back home.

This done we waited on the rest of the party in the residents lounge, where there were plenty of comfy seats and tables in the conservatory with a well stocked bar (a plethora of whiskeys on offer as befits a bar not far from the ferry terminal over to Islay and Jura) just off it with craft beers etc. On the arrival of the rest of the party while we sorted out drinks in the lounge the waitress dished out menus and after a suitable time perusing, took the order for the meal, allowing us a little time to catch up before informing us that the starters were ready and allowing us to decant to the table in the other end of the conservatory. Bright and spacious surroundings in the restaurant and comfortable seating make this a pleasant place to be. The food was superb starters consisted of scallops which were seared to perfection on black pudding, pulled pork on a black pudding with a poached egg on top and all cooked perfectly. Mains were Fish and chips with a healthy bit of fish and chunky cut chips, rump frites again a perfectly seared and not insubstantial lump of rump and skinny fries, mac and cheese with the option of spicy sausage through it, creamy and delicious, rib eye steak again juicy, beautifully prepared and with sides of mushrooms and vine tomatoes. Deserts were rather good as well, all in all a fantastic unrushed night and great company in clean, comfortable surroundings.

We went for dinner on the first night and enjoyed scallops in a gorgeous creamy sauce, fresh veg and the best chips on the island. We were in the bar every night, amazing selection of Islay whiskey (seriously, they have them all), all the banter from locals and holidaymakers alike. We got a tour of the hotel and every room has been renovated using Islay timber. It really is something special. In actual fact the whole place was renovated in stages using the timber including the bar, dining room and every door in he place. Some have little features hidden in the knots of the wood. Lots of talking points, including the original murals from back in the day which features the bar locals at the time it was painted. Fantastic.

The house is conveniently located on Port Ellen such that access to the restaurants, pubs, shops and shoreline are no more than a few minutes away by foot. Walking to the three close whisky distilleries of Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg is done in under an hour, one way. You may want to book transport back, depending on how much you sampled! The rooms are clean and tidy for a couple or single accommodations with en-suite shower and toilet for three of the rooms and a dedicated combination for the fourth room. To go along with the primary accommodations, the breakfast and general communal area is downstairs where a satisfying and freshly prepared breakfast is served according to your specifications, recorded the day before. Niall is prompt and flexible on setting your meal before you with your satisfaction foremost. I cannot stress more strongly how helpful Niall has been on advising me about Islay, setting up tours, getting restaurant reservations or advice on Glasgow accommodations. Top notch!

We sat in the comfortable lounge area - there were a few other people in there when we arrived, and it was nearly silent, making for a somewhat awkward arrival. Some tunes came on the TV (hits of the 90s, I was in heaven) and we settled back with our beers. I was quite hungry but food wasn't being served until 6pm, so we snacked on some peanuts instead. Within about 1/2 an hour the bar was heaving, it seems perhaps there was some kind of Tarbert pub crawl going on and every table was full. With a relaxing, friendly vibe this was a nice stop for a drink although with the limited range of beers, I'd trying visiting other pubs first to see if anyone had anything a bit more interesting.
