Some friends and were in Charlottesville on a hot spring day and decided that we needed ice cream. As soon as we walked into Kilwins, we were surrounded by all kinds of candy and found the ice cream in the rear of the store. They had some interesting flavors and we were able to try some samples. I opted for a scoop of apple pie and a scoop of sea salt caramel. Unlike other ice cream, where the caramel is hard, this ice cream had gooey caramel. Many selections of ice cream to choose from on a very hot day. Unfortunately it was super expensive and to me not & not worth it. However the servers were very nice and allow a few samples before my best friend made her choice in picking the sorbet. A chocolate lovers heaven! I've been wanting to visit Kilwin's for a while now and luckily while in the area my friends and I finally got to do so! Most things are by the pound, but you can do an assortment of items. They have every type of chocolate you'd desire. I end up spending $11 so it can add up and be a little pricey but the taste was well worth it. Staff wear masks and sanitizer is provided/encouraged upon entire. Masks are required to entire. I am passing through Charlottesville and was surprised by Kilwins; it had some of the most bland ice cream I've ever had. I got the turtle cheesecake and it didn't really taste like any of the flavors described (cheesecake, caramel, pecan). My wife felt the same way about her mint chocolate chip. I'm always happy to find an ice cream shop that makes their own waffle cones and even these were surprisingly flavorless. I think the ice cream is served too soft as well. By the time we paid it was already dripping heavily. The waffle cones are kept hot and this certainly doesn't help. To top off our Kilwins experience we sat down at a table and my wife dropped a piece of her waffle cone on the ground. A bird approached, tasted the cone, and promptly spat it out. read more

Kilwin's leans toward the more expensive side, but it's a nice place to stop once in a blue moon for a sweet treat. I selected a chocolate-dipped rice krispie treat on a stick, as well as a chocolate-covered oreo. Both were delicious. They also have ice cream, but I haven't tried that yet. AMAZING. This may be one of the best ice cream places I've ever been to. They were featuring a chocolate coconut ice cream that I knew I had to try. It was so packed with coconut pieces and was delicious. I also got a scoop of some banana and chocolate which was also super good. Two scoops in a cup cost me just shy of $8, which is pricey. So i visited kilwins roughly 2 p.m. and asked for a turtle caramel apple and asked for it to be cut. I walked one block & opened The Apple took a bite of it, and it taste as if it could've been a little old when I look at all the apple slices, every last one of them were brown, the store said they where less than two weeks old is what I was told and basically they can't do anything. The apple doesn't even smell good or fresh recommended to only get when they are fresh so you might want to ask the date they were put in the store read more

Do all Kilwin's come with a clean store and a great staff of folks working in it? My initial visit to a Kilwin's was in Alexandria and it was awesome!! The C-ville location in the downtown mall continued the trend and we were once again trying to limit ourselves to only a few items. I am a chocolate fiend amongst other desserts and treats so the lady had to rein me in. Before I knew it I had boxes of chocolate and was staring at ice cream for the walk back to our hotel room...I got problems man. Their ice cream is awesome and they have a large assortment of (mainly) in-house made sweets. However their prices are a bit insane, it's almost $5 for a small cone (McDonald's size) & 1 scoop of ice cream. To buy a big version of their Reese's cup is 4 or 5.99. Their items are good, and their staff was very friendly. The only reason they lose a star is because of their prices. I don't imagine prices ever going down either, they're a popular destination in Charlottesville and you'll rarely see Kilwin's empty. read more

We decided to try the ice cream at Kilwin's on our evening at the downtown mall instead of Chaps because of the unique flavors. I love to try region and store specific flavors when I go to ice cream shops and the Cville Mud flavor caught my eye. In addition, the shop was much cleaner and presentable compared to Chaps. The workers and customers were following distancing and mask guidelines. Kilwin's also has chocolates and other sweets that we did not try but looked pretty good. The chocolates inside made the shop smell nice. The shop is not offering samples of ice cream flavors because of Covid. We were disappointed after tasting our ice cream because both flavors had freezer burn and there were ice bits in our scoops. The ice cream flavors that we tasted were also pretty underwhelming. Overall, the shop is nice inside; however, the ice cream is mediocre and I felt like it was not worth the high price. read more

I think Kilwin's is the ice cream shop Charlottesville has been needing. Don't get me wrong, there's no shortage of sweet treats on the downtown mall, but Kilwin's kind of has everything, including good old fashioned homemade hard ice cream. Other places in town tend to be gelato, soft serve, or mass-produced hard ice cream brands. I walked in on a Saturday night and was offered a sample of one of their fudges. I had the peanut butter and my husband had the sea salt caramel chocolate. Both were good and had a nice smooth texture. Since our mission was ice cream, we kept moving to the back. They had 2 large cases of flavors to choose from, some of which were more inventive than the typical selection--like strawberry chunk, turtle cheesecake, and s'mores. I went for the chocolate peanut butter, which was really delicious. The chocolate was dark and creamy, and it had really big chunks of peanut butter throughout. My husband got the New Orleans praline pecan, which was also great. It was on the sweeter side but in a good way. It had nice swirls of caramel and candied pecans. At first I thought $3.99 for a single scoop cone was a little steep, but then it ended up being a pretty generous portion. The shop itself is really inviting and the staff was very friendly. They have all kinds of candy, a case of fresh chocolates, and caramel apples, which I haven't had in forever and might need to come back for! Kilwin's is perfectly reminiscent of the old-school ice cream shops I used to go to on summer vacations as a kid. The sprinkle of salt topped off the fudge with a perfect balance of flavors. I also sampled a few of the ice cream options. Every single flavor of ice cream was rich, creamy, and delicious. A cup of ice cream was a bit expensive (almost $5 for a single scoop), but it is clear that they use high quality ingredients and serve all of their food fresh.
