My wife and sister-in-law wanted to try our luck with the new Korean resto in town. It is tucked away in a strip mall plaza across the street from McDonald's within the MegaWorld complex. From the outside walking in, it looks very clean and modern so it's a nice feeling overall. Main floor has quite a few tables and they also have a 2nd floor for lounging and drinks. Their menu has many choices for both individual and combination dishes. Their staff are friendly and very willing to accommodate our appetites. We ordered the SoonDuBu (spicy seafood tofu) soup, TangSuYuk, (Korean style sweet and sour pork), half-sized Yangnyum chicken (marinated in soy sauce, honey, garlic, pears and green onion then sprinkled with sesame seeds), and HweDupBap (Salmon sashimi on a bed of vegetables and rice). The appetizer dishes came out right away - small amounts but enough before our order arrived. Sounds good right? So this is where they failed: SoonDuBu was just ok. Nothing stellar but I was pleased that it had a good amount of substance in it. The TangSuYuk lacked the sweet and sour flavour I was looking for. After a few bites, you just keep chewing on more chicken and deep fried batter. The same went for the Yangnyum chicken as the spice sort of overrides the entire dish. But the biggest disappointment of all was the HweDupBap. Normally this dish is served with cold and freshly cut slices of sashimi. How would you feel if it was served frozen? We had to return it to have it cooked because there was no way we would continue eating FROZEN sashimi. Then eating pan fried sashimi when it was meant to be served fresh and not frozen (or defrosted for that matter) was an even bigger disappointment. At the end of the meal, the owner kept swatting at flies with his "electric tennis racket". We will not be coming back any time soon.

Before the resto opened any decent manager or shift supervisor would have sent someone over to SM's in-mall supermarket to buy some of these key ingredients and the owner would have a hefty fund available for such purchases, but the lame 'follow the 'leader'' principle was firmly in place, and nothing could be done. As well, they have only a small menu needing ingredients that should not ever be out of stock. The uncovered burner in the middle of the table was covered in grease and leftovers from previous diners. Where is a manager? Not to be seen. We got up and walked out, and will never return. This place would be '0' stars if possible. I would not recommend even checking it out. If want bbq go to Kogi & Vegi on the Boardwalk Esplanade, or Chodam at Uptown Condos on General Luna Street. If you want Korean in the mall, go upstairs to the 2nd floor food court to Kogi & Vegi. Oh yes, don't bother with this loser!

After having eaten here about 7 times, I suspect there's no Korean supervision in a kitchen that seems lost for direction and the necessary expertise to put out really good dishes that are not either overcooked or just a mess... I'd like to be generous, but simply cannot. The portions of our last two dishes were okay, but the flavour and presentation is distinctly missing, as well as the beef in the spicy BEEF soup: not only boring flavours, there were only 2-3 very tiny pieces of beef in it! The size of your little fingernail would describe the size! In effect the beef was missing. How does one rate spicy beef noodle soup that has no beef in it? A big fat '0' stars! My wife's dish of mixed seafood soup had the same basic flavour, but so boring. At our express request, we asked the waiter to tell the kitchen to not overcook it as they'd done a year ago, but so much missing from this bland dish that it's not even 3 stars on a good day. Unless you like to cook pork belly at your table, stay away? For instance, the spicy fried chicken at Chodam on Gen'l Luna Avenue is better (same owners), but the Vietnamese food at Troi Oi next door is superior to anything in the city on every count, and Taiwan Shabu-Shabu is the best of the rest. Just go there instead? Kogi & Vegi is best avoided. No one seems to care.

So this is a solid 4 stars, they keep the ban Chan coming and the fluffy omelet is very soft. The seafood soup is boiling hot and plentiful. The bi/bim/bop with bulgogi in a bowl (veggies with beef) with somewhat of a poached egg is so comforting. This was my go-to during college, not cup of noodles. Finally, The seafood pancake, what can I say but Cam Sam Nida (thank you)!! That is excellent, along with the grilled pork with garlic. There's a nice view of the river and there seems to be a lot of people at lunch time, here at Kang Byeon.

The locals don't seem to know good Koreano food, but after living in other parts of Asia and North America, it's just not good at all. The 4 pre-meal appetizers were fewer than normal (6-7), but were okay. Their homemade kimchi was good enough although on the hot side, and the Korean egg slices were just passable. From then the rest drops off a cliff win their garlic peanuts, tiny deep-fried fish, and sweet potato chunks. Not that good. First time ordered dolsot bibimbap and spicy squid with glass noodles: we were quite satisfied with overall flavour, quantity, and the price was more or less right compared to other Koreano restaurants. Downsides... 1. The bibimbap. This good mostly-veggie dish can either be served cold or hot, but the thick pot this meal was placed in could scorch our skin 15 minutes after it was served. When we told the owner, she tried to explain it away in broken English rather than simply apologize and tell us she'll adjust the temperature, so that it doesn't continue to scald the contents and my fingers until my hunger finally emptied it. 2. The spoiled little children running around the place or screaming for 15 minutes without being corrected. It's a large open room, and certainly not suited to that. 3. The building is somewhat dumpy, but the river flows quietly beside the back of the restaurant. Looking out onto the wide back patio, it's easy to see that it would be well suited to having about 5 or 6 sizable 4-6 seater tables outside but it was a dirty mess back there. When it is daytime, it must be unsightly to the backwall tables. But it has potential, and would be an upgrade to this venue. Oh well... Second time we ordered fried dumplings and what looked like and tasted like jap chae with glass noodles but came with another name. Downsides... 1. the dumplings were overcooked and bathed in so much oil that afterwards our stomaches felt slightly uncomfortable. Age and quality of the oil, or just too much? 2. the 'jap chae' was a small portion, greasy and short on veggies, but tasted okay. 3. at least no noisy kids running around this time. We've been spoiled by much better Korean fare in other parts of Asia and Canada, and therefore have a standard to compare this to. But it's only on a par with 'overcook it before it revives' Kogi & Vegi and the other poor venues in Iloilo. Chodam seems the best but it too is inferior. Kang Byun. The Koreana owner smiles welcome quite enthusiatically, but by what the kitchen is putting out, she's no cook nor is she supervising, because the over-cooked greasy food is typical of poorly-trained unshepherded filipinos. Situated in the somewhat gloomy marginally-serviceable spartan student dorm-inn Riverside Hotel, and this place and the food is well-suited to that assessment. We do not recommend this place unless you are okay with what is stated here. Go to Chodam for slightly better Korean, or run over quickly to Troi Oi for excellent Vietnamese soups, stews and other delicious dishes. But forget this place!

Their version of the Korean traditional dish of gumjatang (pork backbone and potato soup/stew). When an insipid soup comes of the kitchen, and I feel impelled to dump most of a whole take-in container of doenjang soybean sauce/paste to bring the flavour up to approximate how it's supposed to be, then there are problems in the kitchen. Once again, I doubt that there's a Korean cook, chef or supervisor helping out back there, and so the pinoy cooks are forced to do their best by memory, likely taming the dish down so that flavours are leached out and authenticity almost totally gone. Yes, the pork is plentiful, but it's not pork backbone, but rather are large bone-in porkchops. The potatoes are fresher and more plentiful than usual, but this dish is such a weak diluted copy, then gotta rate it as such. Their 7 pre-meal appetizers are pretty good, but that doesn't constitute the main course. Sometimes in such poor representations of a super food culture, my wife and I want to get up after downing the appetizers, and with a small tip, leave. Who needs an entree that fails to be real on so many counts? More? I am not at all a Koreano cook but I know some of the ingredients of the real thing (online searching quickly bring some up for you). So the next day with the large amount of leftovers at home, I added some ingredients: a couple of chopped-up local red peppers, two crushed cloves of garlic, some Chinese black bean paste (not dissimilar to doenjang sauce/paste), and some red mustard seeds (the better Korean restos around the world add them for some extra zing and eye appeal). How were the results? Really good and fit right in. Given we'd dumped a brought-in container of doenjang paste into the 'dine-in' meal, it had time to permeate the dish overnight, and then with the added ingredients, it approximated how it should taste! Chodam? Go there if you want, but I rather doubt we will return. I think I can do better, including their deep-fried spicy chicken. Why pay out 400-750+ pesos for mediocre stuff that a home cook can quite easily duplicate and better? Bye, bye, Chodam.
