This place is delicious! This was the first time that I've tried Japanese Hot Pot in the US and it definitely exceeded my expectations. I would recommend making a reservation in advance. We were seated quickly because there just happened to be a cancellation ahead of when we arrived. They have an outdoor seating area with three separate "rooms." The doors were a bit finicky though, so be careful. We ordered the Karaage as an appetizer, along with the Collagen Nabe (shoyu flavor) and Kurobuta Pork Belly Nabe (miso flavor). Both hot pots were delicious but I think the collagen one was my favorite because it was a bit more flavorful and had slightly more ingredients. You can also add extra broth whilst you're eating, which is something we weren't aware of (we were trying to conserve the broth by turning off the heat). Another hidden gem alert tucked in the bustling Japanese food scene in Saint Marks. Kimura serves a Japanese style soup called Nabe that is rich, flavorful, and heart warming. When I heard these guys are experts in that craft, I immediately jumped on the bandwagon and placed a reservation for two for a Saturday night at 6pm. Boy was I in for a memorable meal. Decor first: super cute!! Definitely a good date spot. My girlfriend and I absolutely loved the Japanese decor that was scattered through the restaurant and the old Japanese posters for various events throughout. It was also super cool to see them have a whole back yard set up that was far more quiet than their outdoor dining setup at Saint Marks. Very cute! Now to the food. Total bill came at ~$105 and it came with a X2 order of the collagen Nabe (must try), grilled squid, chawanmushi, watermelon mojito, and a yuzu sour. Drinks first we're fantastically made and fresh. Yuzu sour was strong in yuzu flavor and the mojito mintyness paired well with the watermelon. Both drinks were $10 bucks so what a steal. Now for the food: must try is the collagen Nabe. It's a piping hot stew with sliced pork belly, chicken thighs, tofu, scallions, cabbage in a SUPER umami flavored broth. At $23/person, you order based on portion size. Portions were massive, honestly this could've just been our meal for the night. Super flavor and rich broth, really don't think I had anything quite similar since I was last in Japan. The other appetizers were great as well. Squid was nicely grilled to a crisp, only complaint was wished the chawanmushi egg was a bit more flavorful and had bigger portions. Very well done, hot and soft on the inside with good chunk of octopus. They we shared the kuro buta nabe which was pork belly. You have to order two portions but that is definitely big enough to share between 4 people. There was so much pork belly, tofu, bean sprouts and cabbage. We got it in miso soup base. Probably my favorite spot on St. Mark's! This establishment offers Japanese hot pot and an assortment of other dishes that really make it such a cozy and warm place to go. My family and I sat at a booth near the door. We ordered lots of things, probably too much to list, but the standout was obviously the shabu shabu with U.S. wagyu. When it first comes out, the servers will come to arrange all the ingredients into the steaming pot. It's the perfect meal to eat on a cold day. Next time, I'm going to try their sukiyaki! I've been to this place multiple times, the food has always been amazing. Beef intestine nabe doesn't disappoint. The soup is so delicious, I had refills three times. Pig feet nabe is on the mild flavor side, even though it's advertised as a bit spicy, I don't think you can quite tell the difference between the beef intestine nabe's natural spicy peppers from the red soup with pig feet, which one is more spicy. Service is good. Servers check in on you, not regularly but it's enough to meet my need. We came here both during lunch time and dinner time. There's certainly a longer wait in the evening and would recommend making a reservation. Ambience is good for small party and casual dating. Can be loud depending on the people sitting next to you. The only reason I'm giving this place a four star is because their restroom is located in the basement with very tall stairs. Not very friendly for disabled. The food is fantastic, the service is good, and the ambiance is nice (especially if you enjoy acoustic covers of pop songs - for some reason that's all they seem to play at this restaurant, but I'm not complaining). I've tried almost every type of hotpot/nabe here and my favorites are the collagen nabe, Hakata motsu nabe, and kuro buta nabe. Also, I recommend ordering ramen noodles to put in your hotpot! We ordered two large portions of the pork belly nabe, which came with pork belly, cabbage, bean sprouts, tofu, and chili. The broth was really warming and flavorful. The pork belly was really tasty and there was a chili oil they gave us that went well with the meat. We also got an order of beef tongue as an appetizer, and it had a good seasoning and a chewy-ish texture to it. Despite the food being good, the two large pots wasn't enough for 6 people; they didn't come with enough meat, and there were a ton of veggies left after. All the ingredients tasted really fresh and I especially loved the yuzu dip they give you as well. The soup and all the ingredients they put into the hot pot are really nice and flavorful. I went there on a pretty cold day so the soup honestly felt like a nice warm hug full of umami and flavor. Would definitely recommend trying here at least once! We were about 30 minutes late, but the staff kept our table for us, which we appreciated very much. He told us that the restaurant serves cuisine from Fukuoka, a city in the southernmost part of Japan, and opened during the pandemic. We ordered the pork belly hotpot, yuzu miso salmon which came highly recommended by the waiter, yuzu tripe and the chicken skin and harami beef skewers. The salmon was def not fresh and had a very fishy taste to it. Yuzu tripe was dry, chewy and overcooked with no flavor and cucumbers that it's paired with were wilted. Chicken skin skewer was super dry and the beef skewers were tough and over cooked. The pork belly hotpot was ok but yet again the broth was bland. What upset me most about this meal was the terrible service! When the staff came to serve us the hotpot they were completely careless and forcefully put the ladle in the hotpot which made the soup splatter all over us and the table. It's a good thing I was able to dodge the splatter otherwise I would've gotten a nice burn from this meal. They also just served us all the meat in one bowl without putting in any veggies or other ingredients. They made us feel like they were in a rush and had no interest in serving us. It would have been better if we served ourselves. Lastly, when we asked for the check the waitress just shoved the card reader in our face, didn't even give us a chance to look over the bill and quickly turned around and left once we signed our bill. No thank you or even courtesy to ask if I wanted my receipt. Very disappointed with this meal and upsetting that this was the service we got when it was a meal to celebrate my partner's birthday. Overall, I was really impressed by the artistically designed plates, quality & fresh ingredients, detail-oriented & eye-pleasing decors, as well as the reasonable price tags. In my opinion, a great dish needs to fulfill pleasant sensations to the eye, the nostril, and the tongue. Well, that's what you will get it here. I was especially taken by the neatly designed bento box that my friend ordered, where they give you various meat/fish/veggie/sushi/sashimi tasters on delicate little plates. The symmetry and asymmetry of it is just brilliant. For my Saba Shioyaki, I loved how they thoroughly greaser and grilled the fish, leaving perfect grill marks on it for me to tear pieces off it. Meanwhile, if you have ever tried outdoor dining during the Covid 19 pandemic, you probably encountered mostly hideous looking temporary set-ups, which basically scream "Is this over yet?". But you would get less of such a feeling at Kimura. They really put more thoughts into the Covid boxes(allow me), making them more tasteful looking. I loved the colorful lanterns hanging on the outside, as well as the calligraphy decors & bamboo pot inside. Service was super friendly. Their doorway is nested on the right when you come down a few steps. It has been a St. Marks staple for many many moons. I finally came on a very cold weekend afternoon so their collagen nabe hit the spot! According to some people in my party, the nabe was a bit greasy and salty for their taste but I loved it. I like spicy and saucy food. The broth had a hint of spiciness. They were really generous with the meat. I felt there were more pork pieces than cabbage and tofu. I also really like their hot chili oil. It is spicy and interestingly also refreshing because they added yuzu. We selected kurobota pork as our protein. All dishes are good but we felt the tuna carpaccio and beef tongue slices stood out, we noticed that the grilled squid fell short of flavoring. I came with a friend for Saturday dinner and were able to make a same day reservation for 6:30! My friend had heard great things about this place so we were excited to try. We were immediately seated and this restaurant is so much bigger than it seems. We went down the long hallway and were pleasantly surprised because we got to sit in our own personal (room?) outside and it had a heater and light music in the background, it was perfect! We decided to order the Karaage and Pork Belly Nabe (for 2) to share. Everything was delicious - loved the spicy mayo sauce for the karaage and pork belly nabe was the most perfect homecooked-esque meal for a cold rainy day. The broth was delicious and it was a hearty meal with lots of meat and vegetables. They also gave us sides of these sesame oil and garlic oil based sauces that went so amazingly well with the soup. We ended up having a lot leftover so the portions were definitely generous albeit the overall meal was a bit pricey ($52 total for the Pork belly nabe, and $80 for everything incl tax/tip). Kimura was the spot I went to for my birthday with a friend and we knew we wanted sushi and some other small dishes on the side so we landed on this place. Arrived around 6:30 on a Thursday and we got seated right away, there's seating in the front, middle and outside both behind and into front of the restaurant but they do take reservations. My friend and I got an order of sushi with shrimp inside and a combo of skewers and an order each of yakisoba. The yakisoba noddles were thin but came with good cuts my pork and some veggies on top. The sushi was flavorful and the shrimp tasted great as well. The skewers were a surprise since we didn't know that they call came fired, we ordered the chicken and scallion, shiitake mushroom, and shrimp for the combo and an extra order of the pork with cheese. The pork and cheese and the chicken with scallion were the best ones. And we also shared an order of octopus. Overall they have really great food, very friendly staff and fast service. Even the manager introduced himself and spent quite a bit of time chatting with me and walking me through some of the more standout and unique dishes local to Hakata (and he poured me a complimentary glass of sake which he said was a much better pairing with the Goma Saba than the one I had, and he was right -- it was actually one of the better food / wine combinations I've had. I really appreciated that touch.) As for the food, I had the Chicken Kaarage -- pretty standard Japanese fare, but wow was it delicious, perfectly juicy, and tender. The Takoyaki was also really good, as was the suggested Goma Saba. The Spicy Tuna Cracker was one of my favorites of the night (the name is a bit misleading, as it's really on a fried rice ball). But the rice ball was so perfectly done, and the tuna was fresh and flavorful with the aioli and jalapeño adding the perfect amount of spice. The Beef Tongue was top three as well. Very tender, and the sauce was delicious and well balanced (not too sweet). Would definitely order this next time. The absolute star of the show was the Teppan Beef Intestine. Just...WOW! I would come back to this restaurant just to order this (apparently it's one of the only if not the only Japanese restaurant in the city that has this). It was so incredibly tender, and the homemade Miso sauce in which it's cooked complemented it wonderfully. I know the idea of eating intestine may sound odd to some of my fellow American diners, but just order it... you will thank me later. Absolutely love this place. I've been here about three times and it never fails to impress. We got the kurobuta pork belly nabe, sukiyaki and grilled whole squid. I've tried both the classic and miso broth for the kurobuta nabe and both of these are amazing. This is the perfect dish to have on a cold winter day. Our mouths were literally watering as we waited for our food to cook. My friends loved the sukiyaki and really enjoyed the sweetness of the broth. Honestly, this is probably my favorite place to go to in the area. Staff is extremely attentive. The second time I came here with my partner, one of the servers actually recognized us and welcomed us back. They help you mix your nabe, which is great especially since I'll probably make a mess attempting to do that. They're always constantly refilling my water. They do get busy at night but I've never had to make a reservation. First thing first, fair food. The sukiyaki with A5 Japanese wagyu beef was good. Yet I've had the WORST service ever. I've dined four times here. I enjoyed the food and service all the time. But not TODAY. Today I was served with a male server with long hair. He seemed impatient when we first ordered food one by one then switched to the tasting menu. I mean, if a server gets impatient so easily, they should find another job! Second, the restaurant intended to charge me $10 for outside drinks. Although there is a sign in front of the interior door indicating no outside food/drink, my friend and I sat in an outside cabin and we didn't notice that sign. No one ever told us about this as well. When we finished dining, we ordered two milk tea. The server seemed pretty upset about it and yelled at us "outside food is not allowed". I was like okay and continued talking with my friend. And soon we were thirsty, and we didn't want to drink the tap water two hour ago, so we took a sip of the milk tea. The server saw this and said "no outside drinks" in such an arrogant tone. I mean I can understand the restaurant doesn't want customer to have outside drinks instead of buying theirs, but the server never gave us a new water during the two-hour dinner. I mean, this is still acceptable, until I wanted to check and found $10 was added to my bill without letting me know in the first place. The receipt is digital, so no paper receipt, no warning, no confirmation. If I didn't insist asking for the receipt, the sneaky server can just stole my $10 without my consent. Besides, when I argued with him about this charge, he was soooo annoyed and asked me to never dine here again at Kimura. I mean, I was once a loyal customer here and you forced me to leave. FINE. You are not the only sukiyaki restaurant in NYC, and I believe people can find better service elsewhere. Lastly, although I am way much unsatisfied about this server, I still paid 10% tip. I didn't get a THANK YOU. If a server can't learn how to respect customers then better take that lesson before being one. This is the first time I wrote a negative review to a restaurant. This is for people who want to dine in here at Kimura and get a service corresponding to the food price. We paid over $200 and got such an awful experience. In short, I'll never come back anymore, and I suggest anyone who would like to try this restaurant to think twice. read more

I found Kimura while searching for new places to eat in NYC. Their reservation slots were already pretty much full, even though i was booking about a week out. Luckily, I was able to get a 9:30pm reservation on a Saturday. When I entered the restaurant, the interior design of the restaurant was so nice, very reminiscent of actual restaurants in Japan. All the staff members were so polite, respectful, and friendly. They helped prepare our food (nabe) and served us so politely and gracefully. Two of us ordered the tasting menu for 2, which included the pork belly, tuna carpaccio, lobster roll, nabe of choice, ramen noodles to add into the nabe, and matcha tofu pudding as dessert. We went with Motsu Nabe with classic broth. All the appetizers (pork belly, tuna carpaccio, lobster roll) were great! Generous portions, not too heavy, just enough to get us through until the nabe was ready. Wow the nabe broth was amazing - such deep flavors of the broth. It is simple but rich. The little kick from the peppers in the nabe definitely helped enhance the flavor. The beef intestines did not taste off at all (some beef intestines can have an "off" taste if not properly prepared) - it was tender and full of flavor. It was definitively much needed on a cold rainy day. My favorite was definitely the matcha tofu pudding, the subtle sweetness and nuttiness of the tofu pudding was balanced by the bitterness of the matcha. The price of the whole set was really affordable considering we got 3 apps, nabe for 2, ramen noodle to add to the nabe broth, and dessert. We came here right when it opened and it became busy very quickly. The waiters are very attentive as they help cook the hotpots and put the food in a bowl for you. We ordered the motsu nabe and pork belly nabe. My favorite was the motsu nabe as it was soft and the broth was so savory. If you like gopchang (beef intestines) at kbbq you will probably like the motsu nabe too. The pork belly nabe was good too but it has way too much bean sprouts. Another great find! Came here on a Friday night with reservations for 9:30. I would definitely recommend placing a resy more than 2 days in advance to get a prime dinner time. When we got there, here were a couple inside tables available at this time if you aren't able to place one. We decided to go with their tasting menu for 2 for $95. The tasting menu came with Tuna Carpaccio, Grilled Fatty Pork-Toro, Hakata Mentai Lobster Roll, your choice of hotpot with ramen/udon noodles (we got the collagen nabe with udon), and Matcha Almond Tofu for dessert. We ordered yellowtail and squid sashimi on the side. Each dish was absolutely delicious and left us with full bellies and left overs. They did not hold back on their sashimi cut, and the tuna carpaccio was lightly seasoned to perfection. The pork toro was tossed in a light sauce and provided a lightly salted taste in comparison to the fresh start from the tuna and lobster roll. We absolutely enjoyed the collagen nabe, which had a decent serving of meat to veggie ratio. Our server also offered to refill our broth before packing it to go. The last and final dish of the Matcha Almond Tofu was also super delicious, wasn't too sweet, and provided a nice blend of flavor profile.
