I finally decided to try King Restaurant on King Street in Honolulu after hearing mixed reviews. We ordered half a duck, the tofu seafood claypot, and the crispy noodle with beef. I made a reservation for 6 on a Saturday and when we arrived, we were sat at a makeshift table that broke up our party into an awkward shape. We asked if we could move to the many available round tables next to us but were told those tables were all reserved. I felt that the menu was very overpriced compared to other Chinese restaurants in the area. The food was not bad. The standout had to be the salty egg crab which was unique and tasty. We had given our credit card to the host at the beginning of dinner to avoid a typical Chinese fight over the bill but another waiter who was not informed gave the table the check without the credit card. A group of us had dinner here recently. We started with the chicken and corn soup which the waitress served and is similar to an egg drop soup. Then the rest of the food came rolling out; honey walnut shrimp, kung pao chicken, lobster with-mein, beef broccoli, chicken with black bean and Peking duck. We've eaten here when they first opened and was very happy with their food and chinese new year take out did not disappoint. No 5 star as we had to wait for our food to be ready like 20 min. This place is a typical chinese restaurant feel but more modern than most chinese restaurants. Parking is easy in the back and they have people monitoring the parking so can always find a spot. We ordered Jai, chow fun beef noodles, fried tofu, steamed fish, capital pork chops, green beans, every dish we ordered was really really good and not OILY (plate was not soaking in oil after we ate). What a difference between the first time I tried King's Restaurant till now. The menu has been updated with more clarity. Gone are the Clay Pot rice and dishes. Interior feels more open and bright, and more clean. The bar is now absolutely filled to the brim with wines, sakes, liquor, and etc. I think they have all the Kubota Manju here! Check out its menu, especially the drinks portion. It's a surprisingly HUGE selection from Henan Du Kang in Chinese wine to Kubota Manjyu in Sake, Macallan 25, Kenzo Estate wines, and etc. There are specialty dishes such as Herbal Softshell Turtle soup, Abalone, Sea Cucumber, and Goose Palm stew, Steamed Softshell Turtle, and etc. These, you need to preorder at least 24 hours in advance. The menu is definitely a solid mix of traditional Cantonese dishes, Sichuan, and common Westernized Chinese dishes, so you'll see a lot more dishes you wouldn't see elsewhere besides maybe one or two here and there. We started with the Salted Fish, Chicken, and Eggplant Claypot. The salted fish was meaty, not too salty, and had a clean sweet taste. The chicken was tender and tasty, and the eggplant was soft with a near sear outside. The claypot came out bubbling!! The seasoning was so spot on and well prepared. Next was the Prawns and Vermicelli with X.O. Sauce Claypot. I wasn't expecting so much broth to be coming out of the pot, but that broth had really good flavors. However, lost was the X.O. sauce. Only tasted a little of it. The prawns were very well cooked. Sweet and crunchy. Lastly we had the Stir Fried Pork Jowl with X.O. Sauce. The pork jowl was SO TENDER and SO TASTY. Here I could taste the XO Sauce! This dish also came with cauliflower, and some carrots and snow peas. A very well prepared dish with excellent wok heat. Overall, this was an excellent meal. Every dish came to the table hot. Everything was well seasoned and well prepared, and just spot on. Friendly and attentive service. It took a while for someone to come to our table to take our order. We ordered beef chow fun, honey walnut shrimp, and the mixed vegetables that included carrots, mushrooms, choy sum and a little something.. 12 pieces of shrimp for 18.99...just like all the other honey walnut shrimp photos on here. While eating, you can smell smoke in the restaurant, it's very unpleasant. I don't recommend bringing children or infants..you will smell smoke because people literally smoke right outside and it comes through the restaurant. The food was okay but nothing all that great and to top it off, I got a creepy crawler in my choy sum. I don't think I ordered extra protein.. My experience here wasn't a good one. Walking past the kitchen, it looks dirty and the floors covered in blackness. Makes your stomach turn, and wished I never dined here. It is unsanitary. Growing up in HK eating Cantonese food, I know this place is a legit Cantonese restaurant just By looking at their menu. Servers and a lot of customers also spoke Cantonese when I was there. Tried 4 dishes that night. Overall Delicious food! Their grilled oysters were amazing! The clams in black bean sauce was also delicious. The pan fried noodles could be better. I hate giving 1 star reviews and I hate rating businesses poorly but this is a business that needs to change their practices. ---- Customers be aware -- One of the restaurants that can RUIN your experience with dining out or vacationing as there is -- A minimum of 18% tips for service. Similar to other low and recent reviews, the waitress looks at your tips before you leave and then states you need to tip a minimum a certain percentage. It's basically like a small confrontation, like "I see you didn't tip this percent" *points* Our party of 3 tipped 14% and honestly, for an Asian restaurant that forgets to give you rice until your last 4th dish arrives, how do you not know? We tip generously and can tip less than 20% and we dine out often and never gotten confronted. Instead of asking "what went wrong, why is it so "low"" she felt entitled to the tip. Judging from recent reviews-- where a party even said they would cite credit fraud and file a police report for forcing them to pay higher tips, they still continue this practice of confronting and extorting customers! If you want your workers to have higher tips, pay a livable wage, raise your prices-- see what customers you can retain and attract just by your establishment/services alone. You can also be explicit about it by posting a mandatory service fee charged on top to all parties. It was my kids first time seeing the workers snag a live lobster that we ordered from the tank and brought it back out in a delicious dish lol. After dinner, they gave free dessert (mango pudding and red bean soup). They were both different for my kids, but enjoyable. The staff are very friendly and fast. I don't know how the service is in this place is when it's busy, but my family and I came here on a late Tuesday night and we were by ourselves so we got all the attention lol. Chinese food never fails for satisfying your hunger. I would also like to add that maybe a part from Korean food, Chinese food is the Asian version to comfort food for Americans. King's has it all, it's Cantonese based in cuisine but I noticed the menu has Szechuan dishes with the more bold flavors to be found with the seafood and meat dishes. Sauce is chili based so if you slurp it down as a shot before you devour the oyster be prepared to cough bc of possible chili seeds or if you're not used to spicy. Have your water or bowl of rice ready lol. A great Cantonese dish was the chicken and abalone clay pot. They are cooked as a stir fry with mushrooms and garlic. So yes, garlic is cooked so you can chew for added flavor. Abalone is a type of mollusk so it's great if you like tako for its chewy but soft like an steamed oyster texture. Not pictured but their fried rice dishes are a must try along with the shrimp dishes. The pumpkin, Chinese yam, and black fungus is a must try. Great as a vegan dish. The black fungus is not slimy but more juicy. The yam is slimy so if that's not your style then just pair with a pork dish to enjoy it down. I'm a huge fan of pumpkin and the pumpkin was great with the spices sautéed in. I first came here for a big family dinner and they pre-ordered dishes in advance. Family style here is also allowed in private rooms but you need to call in advance if you prefer to be secluded. The design of the place reminds me of being in a wine or sake cellar since you see the bottles displayed throughout the restaurant. Booth seats are beginning to get run down but that's a good sign for coming into a place with delicious food. Parking is kind of hit or miss at night since there are bars as neighbors. Street parking is also available but of course. The owner did say you can park alongside their building from the parking entrance. We found King Restaurant through a recommendation of a friend. This restaurant is about 2 miles west of Waikiki located near Ala Moana Center. So definitely plan on driving or taking an Uber from Waikiki. There is metered side street parking. Or there is a free private lot in the back (which was full when we came for dinner Monday evening around 6:30 pm). The place is small with several large tables for 8 or more. There were only about 5 tables that seated four or fewer guests. We were a party of 3. When we got here, it appeared there were no other guests ahead of us. But then two of the smaller tables cleared and two other parties came out of the woodwork. It was a little confusing as the front door faces the street while the back door was open to that private lot. We were somewhat annoyed as the stay didn't seem to notice that we were already waiting for a table (and then waited an additional 20 minutes). We ordered five traditional dishes for the three of us to share. Rice is not included and is an extra $3 per bowl (really?!). The food was authentic and tasty, and we didn't really wait too long before being served. I would recommend the salted egg yolk shrimp and the vegetable with gold and silver sauce.
