I walked here, about 6/10th of a mile from Forsythe Park, in a neighborhood. There are lots of informational plaques on the wall, but this is more of a story telling destination. Miss Imani does a wonderful job of setting the stage, telling you all about the accomplishments of prior generations of Black Americans and educating you on how people from the time period lived: their jobs, their obstacles, their triumphs. It's so much better hearing this from a story teller than just reading words on the wall. I paid 20 total dollars so I can visit the Beach Institute later (part of the same organization), but the cost of Tisdell alone is 10 dollars. The gift shop is very small and not fancy, but that's not why you're here. Miss Imani also told me about various maps and apps to use to learn more about the Black community in Savannah and surrounding areas. Her hospitality was amazing. This wasn't exciting or enthralling or high octane, but it was a down to earth, tranquil, low speed learning experience where you get to connect with a member of the local community and learn about Black ancestors who laid the path to today.

Kings Tisdell Cottage has been on my list for many yrs, so finally. They are located in a great area outside and have plenty of free parking. This is a rare gem in Savannah, there is normally no free paring anywhere in Savannah. I went at right when they opened up, so I didn't have to worry about the crowds. The cost is $7 for Military ID holders, I believe $10 for all others. The guide was very informative and welcoming during the tour. The house is packed with a lot of information, I stayed approx. 1hr to listen to oktour and browse a bit. The guide also gave me some useful information to do during my stay in Savannah. I travel yrly to Savannah but I appreciated all her tips since she has lived in the area for 20yrs. Savannah's King-Tisdell Cottage is dedicated to the preservation of African American history and culture. The cottage is named for Eugene and Sarah King, and Mrs. King's second husband, Robert Tisdell, former owners of the cottage. It contains many interesting artifacts and is furnished with period pieces typical of a coastal black residence of the 1890s. The works of African-American sculptor Ulysses Davis (1913-1990) are featured here and at the Beach Institute. Originally built on another site in 1896 by W. W Aimar, this handsomely restored Victorian center-hall cottage is significant for the intricate gingerbread ornamentation on the porch and dormer in the wheel and spindle pattern. The residence was scheduled for demolition in 1970, but a joint effort of the City of Savannah and the Historic Savannah Foundation saved the property, and it was moved to the current location. The Museum of Hilton Head Island is a small, interesting and very family oriented museum. I had the…read moreopportunity to check it out, when I first moved to HHI, as it is at the Visitors Center. Within the museum there are a few exhibits and collections of artifacts that relate to the islands history and culture. There are a few small tours that focus on the traditional lives of the Native Americans on the Sea Islands, in addition these is a Pinckney Island walking tour, which is enjoyable (there is a great butterfly sanctuary) Lastly, a Sea Pinces Plantation Overview, which I skipped as I was exploring prior to the tour taking place and feel I got the main points. There are special events that occur from spring till summer-bird tours, which I have not done, but will return to do so. From there, there are a few agricultural exhibits as well as some wildlife preserve areas, with the information boards, explaining the dwellers, their history and habitats. The cost for most of the tours is $12 for adults and $7 for children, which is a bit steep, but with limited private funding, the money needs to come from somewhere...

The Telfair is a beautiful albeit small classical art museum housed in a historic mansion…read more A $30 ticket gets you into the Owens-Thomas House and Slave Quarters, the Telfair Academy, and the Jepsen Center. It's definitely worth it to stop in on the Telfair Academy to get your money's worth! There are several floors of artwork, but each floor is relatively small. The architecture of the building is stunning! I think I breezed through the museum in about one hour. The Telfair Academy is the location of the statue from the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil! If you're a fan of the book/movie, make sure to stop in to see the statue and read more about the history of Bonaventure Cemetery!

Woooooweeeeee! Two parades in two days in two states. Don't really recommend that, but family was…read morevisiting and sometimes you just gotta put your Hostess face on and parade on! We attended Savannah's St-Patrick's Parade the day before. Sunday was a new day and it was actually St-Patrick's Day and Hilton Head Island was having their 36th Annual St-Patrick's Day Parade, so why not? Might as well, right? Go big or go home! Fun Fact: It is the oldest parade in South Carolina. Parking: We parked in the lot by BI-LO on Pope Ave. It was pretty full as it was getting close to show time, but we managed to find a spot in a dirt area by the side of BI-LO's building. People were also parking on the sides as well as other spaces that were not marked, but I guess, this is allowed for events such as the parade because we were parked there for awhile and no ticket! Phew! Where we set up: We walked out of the lot where BI-LO was and just crossed the street and planted ourselves right on the median. It was getting crowded everywhere else on the sidewalks. We had pleasant neighbors so that was a relief. Highlights: The military bands, an antique fire truck, classic cars, The Oscar Mayer Wiener Mobile, the Planters Mobile and all the goodies my kids got for standing by the sidelines. Most participants of the parade were giving out SO. MUCH. CANDY. My kids probably got just as much candy during the parade as last Halloween! The parade was very family oriented and well organized. Everyone was well behaved at this parade too. It started off at Coligny Circle and went down Pope Ave. I just wish that some of the participants would put a little more effort into floats or something, instead of just walking the parade or riding in a car. All in all, been there, done that! It was a great excuse to drive out to Hilton Head too.

This was one of the less enjoyable historical tours I've taken. I ended up coming here for a…read morecouple reasons: one, I wanted to grab some cool pics of the stairwell. Two, one of the local tour guides told me about the Chan family who lived here during the 1900s and I was intrigued. The house is pretty cool. Very colorful. A lot of innovation for that time in architecture and function. But that's where it ends. The whole tour focuses on the very short amount of time between around 1820-1827, the time of the original Davenports. Very vanilla. It skids over the life of the enslaved. And it so sadly did not cover any of the home's life as a tenement home, meaning you hear nothing about the amazing Chan family, the patriarch of which lived until 2016, aged 102. There are so many interesting American stories to learn from this historical landmark, yet you hear none of that. It doesn't help that the museum across the street was not up and running the morning I visited because all of the informational plaques (which would have mentioned at least some of the info I was craving) were down because the window washers were coming. It would be helpful to offer more than one tour, perhaps one where the tour focuses on the Davenports, another focusing on tenements and the enslaved. There are some days where you can do self guided tours. I paid just under 18 bucks. Owens-Thomas house is a more impressive and interesting tour if you have to choose between the two.

We walked through the house to the back and found an incredible exhibit on the Chan family from the early 1900s. It's a new exhibit they just created in January in partnership with the Chan descendants. The Chans were influential members of society in Savannah and their children were the Chinese children born in Georgia and the first to integrate into white schools. They owned a Chinese laundry and really made an effort to get involved in the community versus isolating themselves which to me was a brave approach to take as a non white family in the south. We didn't get a chance to see the rest of the house but definitely recommend stopping in to see the Chan exhibit and it's free!

This was our first stop (after lunch) in Savannah because we wanted to get an overview of the city…read morebefore we began exploring it. None of the docents were on duty. So, the curator himself gave us the full tour. You know how sometimes you can tell that someone is doing a tour but doesn't really want to do it. Steve gave no such impression. The tour starts with a 3D model of the city and explains the layout and a brief history of the 22 squares in the Historic District. We then went to see examples of the various architecture represented throughout the District (and beyond). Then we got a glimpse into the lives of the people--free black, free white, enslaved, native--who built Savannah. It was a great start to the trip!

Once we started walking through it was very underwhelming. We should have done more research on it before entering. Seems pricy for the amount in the museum.

Went with my in laws and my infant and it was a great treat for us all. The garden and the chapel are great extensions to the museum, especially when the weather is great. Definitely worth a visit!
