My friend got the Calamari Salad ($20) - it had nice, long pieces of calamari (probably 6-7 pieces) where you actually felt like you were eating calamari, and not just pieces of fried batter. The salad and fried tortilla bowl were also pretty sizable. We also got the Croquettes ($9) to share, but I would pass on this. It tasted too much like deep fried chicken salad and tasted too much like cream vs. cheese & chicken. Decent sizes, but not really my cup of tea. All in all, great grub / pub food and a nice selection of tapas and entrees to boot. Compared to downtown Melbourne where I was getting used to paying $20 for a small plate of seared tuna, this was a nice change of pace. Mind you, it is a bit of a hike to get to since it is about 50 km from the centre of Melbourne, but fortunately there is a railway station across the road (though getting off the train simply to have a drink at this pub is probably not the best of ideas). I remember seeing this pub as a kid since my Grandparents used to live out here, but it was years before I managed to get around to actually having a beer here. It has a really nice country feel about it, and the sports bar is pretty much separated from the bistro and dining area. There is a huge garden, but you can also sit out on the veranda and watch the cars all go past. Certainly a place to check out if you are able to get up here.

However, since at the time it was the only thing that seemed to be here (other than the railway station) I wasn't going to get off the train simply to visit this pub. However, when I had my hands on a car I made an effort to visit it, and it is certainly well worth the trip. Sure, Donnybrook is suddenly becoming a new housing estate, however this pub still seems to have a lot of old country charm. It has a lovely beer garden, as well as a really nice front bar. Mind you, the country atmosphere also tends to apply to the locals, so don't expect a trendy inner-city crowd.

Unfortunately they've failed to maintain the quality i saw when i first ate here. I ate here last night and my medium rare steak was as well done as it could have been. I sent it back as it was as tough as work boots too. When the replacement came out medium well, i just conceded to eating the chips and giving up. Their schnitzel is also a pre made freezer type situation, the kind of thing you'd expect from a dingy service station. Everything was dry and clearly not fresh. I hope ill be able to edit this in the future to say they've turned it around but right now i couldn't recommend the place to anyone. A real shame.

This next time, a group of us decided to book a table..again a Sat night, again a live band... Anyway it took a long while to get our mains...a very long while...nonetheless when they came - Pasta Carbonara was generous and tasty, Fish Chips & Salad was just what the 'doc had ordered', Chicken Parma's were well cooked, juicy and the meat was thicker than the crumb, Salt & Pepper Squid was the real thing...all good... eventually... finally... The Summerhill is a Casino-chic, restaurant and bar that caters for a wide variety of people. While I'm not a gambler, I do appreciate the "Vegas" sign up in lights as it reminds me of my time in The States. There is a centralised, massive tv and various mix-sized screens for sports watching. The bar staff are friendly, and have a neighbourly vibe. They are attentive, and act on requests (ie channel changes on the tv to specifics sports - with sound!). Brilliant for watching the game, whether it be footy, NFL, basketball, cricket etc. The bar selection is standard, but could do with more variety in beer (suggestions could be draught from other states, increased international selection from USA, UK and Europe). The kitchen is run by an iron chef that impressively caters for over 40 tables. Had a flat white coffee while here, prepared by Neysa ... and it was superb; easily rivalling boujee coffee shops. Since this is Reservoir, a place desolate for good coffee; I was ecstatic to make this discovery. Like finding an oasis in the desert. Will be back, will become a member!
