EXTREMELY cliquey place, with friendly service exclusively for those the bartenders know and see all the time. As a semi-regular visitor from out of town, I've been here too many times on dead evenings and had the bartender barely say a word, quickly grad my drink, and then engage only with the clique of folks who are there every night. Most bars/pubs I've ever visited at least engage for a few moments with patrons who from out of town. Not this one. If you're not a regular, you're invisible to the bartenders. Also, everything here centers around drag and there's a drag show at least four nights out of the week. Newsflash to the owners: not all gay men are into drag. I feel sorry for the MANY gay men in this area who aren't into drag, that this is pretty much the only social outlet. Not to mention that some of the old school drag queens are really forward and aggressively flirtatious, and if you don't play along they get pissed off and nasty and pretty much tell you to get the f*ck out. read more

Who knew there was such a gay scene in Waterloo, IA?! I sure didn't! I was in Waterloo just before Christmas for family stuff. We stayed at a hotel and my cousin begged us to go there, telling us she "just *had* to see what the gay scene was in Waterloo." She told us we could go back if there was a cover. We walked through snow and cold, and although there was a cover, we stayed. We also got free drink tickets. We walked in to a Celine Dion impersonator lip syncing to O Holy Night, the first of three times we heard that song that night. Some live, some not. There were several Christmas songs sung and lip-synced, as well as other non-Christmas songs. I could tell the bar was full of locals who had been going there for years--it was great! As my cousin noted, there was lots of camo and crosses floating around. My other cousin's husband was asked over the large speaker of his orientation. That alone was enough to keep us laughing for hours. I also learned a few new phrases, like "welll, spaghetti is straight, too, until you get it warmed up." I didn't have a drink, but they seemed decent enough, and free with cover, so who cares?! The next night they were promoting a Movie Day Pot Luck of sorts. People were told to bring bean bag chairs and popcorn and they'd lay around and watch movies and eat and drink and be merry. Loved it! Accidentally ran into Cedar Valley Pride and must say, had a great time. Though for the most part the crowds stuck to their individual groups, people were generally friendly and the bartenders excellent. Being from Chicago, I was thrilled to get 2 top shelf mixed drinks for less than the price of one in a boystown bar. Great place to hang if you are in town! read more

I made my first trip to Iowa last year after having met my boyfriend who had the misfortune to be from Iowa. Jokingly, I asked him if there were any gay bars in Waterloo, his hometown. He said no, but Google said otherwise! So, we went here. As a big city guy, this bar is nothing special and the night we were there they were out of limes! Huh? The best (i.e. the only) gay bar in town - good liquor prices and great queens!

Let me state at the outset I'm not gay, but that's neither here nor there. I wandered into this place as a straight person, not realising it was a gay bar; I ordered a gin and tonic and after a while it dawned on me, "Oh, it's a gay bar". Anyway, barmaid noticed my drink was empty so asked if I wanted another, to which I said yes. After that, however, I was left to trying to catch the barmaid's eye between playing with her cell phone or chatting with the obvious pals she had on the other side of the bar to order another drink. I'm from Australia and have been to gay bars there with gay friends, and the vibe is much friendlier. My sexuality (although presumably unkown to the barmaid) shouldn't matter anyway. I've worked in a bar myself and whether customers are straight or gay, regulars or nay, I know how to keep an eye on their drink level and jump in to ask if they're ready for another. Piss poor, clicky atmosphere. The joint was pretty quiet considering it was a Friday night, so maybe the word has alraedy got out there that unless you're part of the "gang", you won't get a friendly reception. read more

The place is a shit-hole...literally. My friends and I went there to see what it was like and we had the worst night out I can recall in my various years of bar-going. To begin with the people were shallow and boring, capable of only one string of conversation (what my sexual preference was) and when they found out that my friends and I weren't gay they became rude, at first just the men than the women. Probably because they were afraid we were going to hit on their girlfriends (who seemed to be paying more attention to us than their 'butch' counterparts) The Drinks were watered down, though fairly priced. The music was the same tired Cher and Lady Gaga songs that all gay bars in the Mid-West seem to play (exception being Chicago) but the worst part of our night was easily the men's restroom. About two hours into our 2 hour and five minute night (literally...we left five minutes after we found out what the bathroom was like, last straw so to speak) I went to use the restroom and opened the door (which wouldn't shut all the way...) to the most horrific sight I've seen at any bar, gay or straight. Fecal matter covered the walls across from the toilet at the far end of the bathroom. Someone had literally vandalized the bathroom in the most disgusting manner I've seen ever. Toilet paper was clogging the toilet and sink and paper towels were thrown everywhere. Before some fan, or regular from the place takes this out of context or tries to blame me, note the following: 1. I immediately exited the bathroom and told the bartender of the situation to which he replied, "Not again!" So this had happened before and I was not responsible. 2. Of my group I was the only one who had used the restroom up to that point so it was not one of my friends. Despite being greeted with rudeness and mild-contempt, our group remained polite and approachable. To be honest we should have left earlier but we felt that maybe if we hung out a bit longer the 'locals' would warm up to us...nothing doing. In the end I will never return to that place, it was like the cast from "Deliverance" decided to get together and make a gay bar. read more
