They also run keep fit programs and aerobics classes with a qualified instructor at nights. Membership is relatively cheap, and grants you full access to all the club's facilities until 11pm, including the sauna and club kitchen. The club charges a nominal fee for the squash courts (50p per 20 minutes) for lighting and heating, but otherwise most services are free (except some aerobics classes). The staff are friendly and very helpful, and keen to assist you in your game.

Its run on a 'not for profit' basis by a couple of staff and a committee drawn from a healthy sized active membership. The place caters well for everyone from hardnosed serious tennis and/or squash players to people like me who just want to do something slightly fun that contributes towards a more healthy active lifestyle. It is definitely not stuffed with health freaks and fitness nuts! It is staffed 9am-7pm weekdays, when visitors can turn up and pay to use the facilities (4 squash courts, 3 allweather floodlit outdoor Tennis courts, decently equipped gym (A quiet and poseur free zone!) a Sauna, a lounge, Sports equipment shop, and an aerobics room. But its best to go for a full membership - like I did - where swipe card access will allow you to use the facilities pretty much any time, day or night! Courts can be busy weekday evenings between 5-8pm so best to book then, but outside of that getting a court is normally easy enough. If you are a member, you only pay a nominal charge for the lights, and for a few of the fitness classes (inexpensive). Otherwise cost of all the facilities is included in the memebrship fee which is currently £225 p.a. (with discounts for junior and family rates available). This is not Bannatynes - so no free laundered towels or shampoo, but its miles better value and has a relaxed informal feel to it - so there's no snobbishness or posing either. Prospective members are normally given a free tour and allowed to view and try the facilities before they sign up, and there is no hard sell, small print or tie-ins. So its definitely worth just turning up and having a look round if you think you might be interested.

Tried to go snowboarding in the New Years holidays.. and ended up sat in the car most of the…read moreafternoon.. Made pretty good time on the drive over from Edinburgh.. but ended up sat in a queue after two cars got stuck as the roads hadn't been gritted and cleared completely... With the road being quite narrow and not cleared a lot on either side, it wasn't really an option to give up the wait and turn around... Once we eventually made it to the top, the weather was starting to close in, an executive decision was made to throw in the towel and just head home again... but ended up sitting in the car in yet another massive queue to get back down the mountain as they closed the road on both sides to try and clear and grit the road.. In NZ, most ski hills have 'chain up' areas where you can opt to pull over and hire chains for any 2 wheel drives which might struggle to get up the hill, if the road conditions are bad, they can make it mandatory for any non-4x4s to chain up, if you decide not to, there are car parks nearer the bottom to park, then the mountain runs a shuttle service to get you up and down. Glenshee could do with something along these lines, as there was a LOT of frustrated people sat in their cars that day.

While my friend enjoyed a great lesson by Fresh…read moreTracks at the ski school this morning, I enjoyed exploring the slopes on the side of the road with the main lodge, cafe and ticket booth. We had some blustery weather combined with driving sleet, making it wet and also making visibility a bit tough on that side in the morning. That side also felt very constrained within a small area of lifts, and the queues were cold and could be frustrating. I had a fantastic afternoon, though, exploring the many additional runs on the other side of the main road. There were even more trails and you could ride to the top of one munroe and then ski down the other side, taking another lift up the next munroe and down to yet another one! It was really fun and I enjoyed it. I've given Glenshee four stars because I had a really fun day there and really enjoyed their trails. However, I am used to East Coast American skiing and, as this was my first forray into Scottish skiing, I was a bit shocked by the outdated, tiny lodge and the really old lifts. I'm used to large, efficient chair lifts that seat two or three, but at Glenshee only two chair lifts were open and I spent much of my day on what felt like ancient 'pomas'. The equipment/infrastructure of the ski resort is more of a two-star from that repect, but then again I've given more stars because a) I think most Scottish slopes are like that and b) I liked their trails and had a really good time. Plus, the scenery of the Cairngorms was beautiful!

They host a number of putting competitions throughout the summer, where the whole family can get involved. The Pitlochry Putting Green is open 7 days April to October £2.75 adult, £1.75 Child and OAP. Family Ticket £7.50 per family (Min 2 Children) - Pitlochry is a cute village 70 miles north of Edinburgh.

Amazing customer service! Stumbled on to this little restaurant (located at the golf course) on…read moreour first trip to Scotland, 2007. Had the most amazing Crème Brûlée (the way it is supposed to taste) and when I made it back in 2009, was disappointed to find it no longer on the menu (traveled 7k miles for that dessert!) Was told that if I gave a few days notice, they would have it made for me the next time I came. In 2015, I took them up on that offer! Called on Monday before leaving the states, and when I made it there for lunch on Friday, had a case of it waiting for me. Oh my! Master baker Charlie Cuthbert did an outstanding job, and of course the staff was accommodating and friendly (and was even able to advise us regarding ferry out of Scrabster.) We enjoyed every bite with our friends that we shared the Crème Brûlée with, and had lunch at the Fairways one more time before we had to go home. Friendly, affordable and comfortable (I was traveling with teenaged and young adult children), we absolutely recommend Fairways Golf Course restaurant if you make it to Inverness.

The club as a whole has a very nice community feel to it, and you're guaranteed a warm reception. The bar continues that warm feel, and the locals and regulars all make you feel very welcome. A big screen TV is welcome on match day. The prices are fairly cheap for a golfing club, as well as the restaurant prices. The golf circuit itself is very pleasant, up in the hills overlooking the city, but is not without its challenges, as any course on a hill would be. The club features a putting green for practise while you wait, and also a spacious driving range to practise your swing.

Inverness Leisure Centre or the Aquadome has the distinct advantage that it's the only public pool…read morein Inverness. There are two pool areas - one for the serious swimmers and the fun pool. The fun pool has a toddler area, a jacuzzi, flumes, wave machine and outdoor pool. There are loads of changing rooms including at least ten family changing rooms. It can get really busy at peak times and you often have to wait for an available changing room, but you can use the giant body dryer room thingy to keep warm and get you all dry (you can fit a family in it). The most cost effective way to use all the facilities in Inverness Leisure is to get a Hi-Life card - only £20 a month for the whole family. There is also a climbing wall in the building.

The food is AMAZING, with course participants being provided with a whopping 4000 calories a day, guilt-free too, as you definitely work them off! Scheduling in time for tea and cake in the afternoon only adds to the experience. Definitely worth considering if you're looking to do any course in the Scottish outdoors!
