The hotel itself is beautiful with a very beautiful lobby, but some of the staff needs more training in handling guests. There was a security employee who kept it following me for no reason ! My wife and I return to Blackburn once a year or so and typically stay in one of the areas hotels. Our needs differ from the average traveler as we are often hosting family and friends as they come and go to visit us. On this particular occasion we arranged a birthday party for various members of the family. This is where the Foxfields shines. Trying to coordinate these things from our home in the US is never easy but the hotel staff were incredibly easy to work with. Nothing was too much trouble. The buffet they put on for us on the night of the party was first class, but here comes the kicker. We had booked a local magician to help entertain the various attendees and in particular our 8 year old daughter. She couldn't have been more excited but unfortunately the guy failed to show up. The lady in charge of looking after us kept checking in through the evening and wanted to know if there was anything else they could do. My wife jokingly asked if she could find a magician in the next 30 mins? Five minutes later she was there with the number of a local guy she had seen someone use at the hotel previously and 30 mins later he was there performing. Just incredible service! The hotel is under new ownership and I am absolutely certain the aforementioned problems with the accommodation section of the hotel will be resolved in double quick time. In the meantime, the room standards are absolutely fine and the service as mentioned already, is fantastic. The quality of food in the hotel in general is also excellent. We ate breakfast each day and several other meals throughout the week. These people really deserve to succeed and I'm sure they will.

The service, particularly from the manager, the owners and the hotel reception team was great. Nothing too much trouble. The food, despite it being New Year's Eve was good and we both enjoyed the entertainment. The rooms are huge and comfy though the TV is a bit small! Breakfast was a full hot and cold selection and service was excellent, especially considering we were late down and they were trying to prepare the room for lunch! Looking forward to seeing how the hotel changes further as the new owners settle in.

Set in a refurbished manor house from the eighteenth century, it is now a popular place for weekend breaks due to it's tranquil location, stunning surroundings and private golf course. It is also a favourite venue for conferences and weddings, amongst other special occasions. I recently went to a relative's wedding reception here and I was stunned by just how luxurious and elegant everything about Oulton Hall is. The decor is traditional yet has a contemporary twist, while the service is professional. The food and drink itself would not have been out of place in a Michelin starred restaurant, while the function room later served to be an excellent dancefloor. As for the hotel itself, I stayed just one night, but that was enough to make me want to go back. The rooms are furnished classically and come with everything you'd expect from a five-star establishment - television, en-suite bathroom, breaktaking view - and the beds are unbelievably comfortable. There is, of course, an excellent swimming pool and spa facilities, as well as an upmarket restaurant and bar on the ground floor. I would recommend Oulton Hall to anyone who wishes to have a weekend away without leaving Leeds - the only drawback, as you'd expect from a five-star hotel, are the prices.

Breakfast is always one of the highlights. Great selection and top quality food on offer; the temptation is always to try and turn it Into an eating competition. You get free use of the gym and pool, both of which are very small, but well equipped. They were never busy during the day when we used them, but I can imagine they are pretty cramped at peak times. Prices for additional food and drink are not cheap, but there are some great places to eat nearby, if you want to keep the costs down. Only ever had one problem with our room and the staff offered to switch us to another one immediately. It looks like the rooms have recently been refurbished; ours was a nice grey theme, with new HD TV. In general, the staff can't do enough to help either and always say hello when passing them in the corridors. Speaking of which, the carpets in the corridors are now starting to look shabby, with duck-tape covering various tears and splits right along the first floor - not a great first impression for a five star hotel. We have never had a problem with rowdy guests, or noisy kids during our stay, making them all the more relaxing. This place seems to attract professional people rather than large families or groups of teens; just as long as you don't mind a group of office-workers doing team building tasks in the grounds. While you feel like you are in the countryside, The location of the hotel is very close to major motorways, giving you loads of choice for day-trips, like shopping in Leeds or Wigan, or a great selection of National Trust venues and public houses. We have never done the same thing twice!

It was a large wedding but the service was swift. The quality of the food was also high. My only issue was that it seemed quite corporate for a wedding and there was more than one wedding going on at once but if you don't mind that and want somewhere accessible and efficient then Cedar Court is a good option. We slept very well as the bed was extremely comfortable and the self service breakfast was well stocked and hit the spot in the morning. Overall a very good stay.

Unfortunately though the group were in great spirits there were a large number of things that just made this place unbearable. Firstly the decor: The hotel section especially is in dire need of a full redecoration. Peeling wallpaper, smelly communal spaces and tatty carpets were found throughout. In fact the only place which seemed to have been looked after was our room, however despite the competently hung wallpaper there were still a few crucially lacking features, most importantly a safe (which we were told there would be for the wedding rings, meaning keeping them in someone else's room overnight). The bathroom was a bizarre mess, simultaneously clean and dirty. The cheap lino stuck to our feet getting out of the laughably small showers with it's semi-functional door. It is only fair to say that the house-keeping had done a good job and everything was as immaculate as they could make it, so it's not laziness, just dilapidation and incompetence. Secondly the house-staff: While one of the bar staff and the breakfast staff were very nice and pleasant they struggle to make up for the remaining staff. Upon arrival we were just stared at blankly during check-in (not even a hello), during our evening in the bar the staff were slow and rude, one girl especially had a habit of announcing the prices while thrusting her hand over the bar and not making eye contact. "Five Ninety!" *thrust and look away bored*. Thirdly the smell: I can't comprehend exactly what is going on here but throughout the night we encountered a large variety of very unwelcome smells in the hotel. From a faint whiff of bowel movement in the corridors, to a mixture of urine and bleach in the bar, to a rather unfortunate vomit odour in one of the breakfast rooms. I can't tell if this is a product of recent nights of the long encrusted truth of what happens at your average Wortley Hall bash, but it was unpleasant to say the least. Lastly, the fixtures and fittings: This all culminates in the most bizarre feedback I could ever give to a hotel. The overwhelming impression that the entire building was appointed for the dwarves from Lord of the Rings. "What kind of a comment is that!?" I hear you ask. Well what else am I to think when all the mirrors are at a height of 4'6" and all the light bulbs are so dim I think they actually produced darkness? This decision to make all the rooms the Gimli suite may we be deliberate ("It was deliberate!") but that doesn't make it any less a bad idea. Also, I though I did know Dwarves were natural sprinters, I didn't know that they didn't like condiments with their breakfasts. Not a jot of brown sauce, a dollop of ketchup, or heaven forbid a little piccalilli was on offer. Better get some beanjuice while you're up! The most saving of graces here are the grounds. Lovely, well kept and well described. I would only add this, go see them before someone sets up a bouncy castle or a sumo ring in them, which appears to be a daily occurrence around 11:30.

I really wanted to love this place, as it was the hotel we stayed the longest at on our trip to the…read moreUK, but the first interaction at checkin was so off putting that I can't unfocus to see the big picture of our stay. To start, we did talk with the manager who was kind and accommodating and every staff member following was incredibly nice, but our check in person really colored the rest of our visit for us. We are platinum members of Marriott so as part of our membership, we have 5 nights to be used to upgrade the room we book, at the discretion of the hotel if they have it available. I had used 4 of my upgrades and additionally booked a junior suite because both me and my partner had to work and we needed the separate spaces. Worsley Park sent me a confirmation 3 days before our arrival that they accepted my use and that I would have an upgraded room. When we get to our room, it is absolutely not an upgraded room. Though they took my upgrade credits, we were in a normal standard room. I watched on my app as it showed I was supposed to be in a junior suite, downgraded to standard room after calling the front desk to see why we weren't in a junior suite. The man was incredibly rude and condescending. He told us he'd tell his manager and would call us from the room we were in to sort it out. It felt wrong to me to dirty up a room when we booked a junior and also had used my upgrade credits to ensure the larger room so after about 40 minutes of waiting, both of us starving from our 27 hour trip, and still not hearing from the manager, we went down to reception. The man was scowling at us, rudely telling us to just go back to our rooms. Just then, the manager walked up, listened to what happened, apologized, and told us we would be in a junior suite the following day and that the one upgrade credit that wouldn't be used that night would be returned to my account. It still has not. Every time we walked by reception, I'd see the man literally evil eyeing us as I smiled and waved. I cannot say I'd recommend a place that has such rude staff and the fact that when we first got in the rooms, there was random hair everywhere. Go anywhere else.

The staff are all awesome - always on hand to help and very courteous, but in a distinctly northern down-to-earth way which makes the place feel really welcoming (ie. not too posh!). The restaurant is always awesome - myself and wife #1 got married there 3 years ago (...at the hotel, not in the restaurant - we like food, but not that much...) and people still talk about the food and entertainment. We went back last night to celebrate not killing each other for 3 years and the Crayfish soup leapt out as the choice for me on the menu. If you do nothing else this year, visit this hotel and have the crayfish soup. Utterly, utterly amazing - by far the best soup I've ever had in my life. I had to point towards the other side of the room and shout "Look, the Nolan sisters!" to distract everyone while I licked the bowl clean. Oh, I forgot to mention the Sticky Toffee Pudding - add that to your to-eat list as well :)
