Steak & Stout frozen meat pie - Kiwi Kuisine
    Mo O.

I'm an Aussie, so meat pies are like mother's milk to me. Meat pies Downunder are what hamburgers are to the USA -- they're everywhere but there are a lot of awful ones. Still, when you know where the good ones are, there's a devoted following! I gather it's the same in New Zealand; that's where this chef's from. I've ordered savory pies, and even pasties, across the US. Usually it's an Australian, New Zealand or English person behind it. There aren't a lot of places that make them here and most are pretty grim. Sometimes you find a pie with decent pastry ... much less often, a decent filling ...these are the only savory pies I've found that excel in both. The puff pastry on these pies is my ideal for meat pies (as opposed to short crust pastry). It's flavorful and wonderfully light without being too flaky. There are a boat load of pie flavors and I've tried a lot of them but the ones that are my favorites are the steak varieties... steak & cheese, steak & stout, steak garlic mushroom and steak bacon and blue cheese. The steak is chunky, flavorful and tender -- no gristle! -- and there's a decent amount of it. $7 per 7.5oz hand pie is a good deal to me, based on the quality. In fact, I'd gladly pay more for a "premium" pie with even more filling. I've never visited the store but they go by Kiwi Kuisine pies online and can be shipped to you by ordering from the web site (or ordering from Wholefoods, although you'll need to put a special order in if you want more than 1). They ship frozen perfectly, just reheat in the oven (microwaving is allowed but not ideal imho) in 30 minutes, and are the perfect comfort food, winter or summer. I pair them with a salad and it's a simple and delicious meal. Most Aussies slather their meat pie with tomato sauce (ketchup to you) but these taste so good, I often skip it. When I was confused ordering online (probably more about me) I call the store and the staff couldn't have been more helpful or patient.

Walked by this place a couple times, kind of tucked in a plaza off Eisenhower (next to a large doggy daycare), decided to check it out. Immediately greeted as I walked up by a guy outside breaking down boxes, he came in and walked me through the pies, describing them, asking questions on what I liked. I decided to go with the Chicken Curry Pie out of the many different options from Lamb, Steak, and even a breakfast pie. The Chicken Curry Pie was delicious, nice tasty crust and inside was full of flavor. Chicken, curry, peas all done up like a delicious Pot Pie. But not like ones you get from Banquet (way, way better). Great for quick lunch or snack, not terribly overpriced at $7 and change (including tax). Definitely will be back to try a couple of the other options.

Kiwi Pies are a delight. Upon walking in you are engulfed in New Zealand warmth, color, and flavors with authentic and fresh pies! Being new to the shop, it's nice that information sheets tell you a little about why the shop was founded. Customer service is fantastic! The owner's wife was just so welcoming and knowledgeable. She knew everything about her pies and can answer all your questions. The owner informed me all the pies are Nut Free, and have a unique way of sweetening their pies that makes them not too sweet which I appreciated. You can tell they love what they do, and if I know anything LOVE is the key ingredient in a good pie. The store is relatively hidden away right on Eisenhower. They have a few parking spots out front solely for patrons of the Kiwi Pie Shop so rest assured you're safe getting immersed in the world of pie. It's nice to know they have fresh sweet and savory, slice or whole pies baked for walk-in customers. They also offer frozen individual ones to take home and bake at your own leisure for a quick lunch or large ones for holidays etc. All options are available upon walking in. They were not short of options which I was so thrilled to find. I was so fantastically overwhelmed I just needed to try them all. I specifically had a sweet tooth so I can only review based off of the sweet pies. They showcase their fresh creations and it's tough to say no. I was advised that instead of getting a slice of each (Which they can warm up for your eating pleasure), they have a deal to get a whole pie with 7 slices of each you select. You can customize it to your specifications which is ideal for trying out the shop or bringing favorites home :) The fresh juices are also amazing! They allow you to sample them too which I loved. I bought two! Highly recommend the green juice and the ginger lemonade. I will now go slice by slice: -Hokey Pokey apple pie- nice thick apple slices with a cinnamon taste. Crust is amazing and unlike anything I've ever had. Not lacking in any area. Very authentic not at all generic or plain. You just can't get this at a store. Not too sweet, definitely a classic favorite. -key lime- one of my personal life goals is to find the best key lime pie in VA. I found it pretty sour and limey which is something I find a lot of slices lack. Maybe I need a better medium...not 10/10 on this guy. -heartbreaker slice- (berry pie with thin layer of chocolate underneath) the bitter chocolate evens out the tartness and it's a great bite with flakey crust. -peach- the crumble on this was the best part, also the thick peach slices!! -lemon cherry- true to lemon taste with chunks of real fruit. Incredible. -piña colada- the cream is full of coconut flakes and pineapple pieces. Very rich and creamy! While it was the last one I would've thought to try, it stood out! Recommendations: -Lemon Cherry -Heartbreaker -Piña Colada If you're a pie fanatic, or just want to try something new, I highly recommend this shop. Make sure you swing by!

Love the steak and cheese pie. The delivery was quick and the pie was delicious. I will definitely buy more pies to try in the next few days.

We stopped in for lunch before taking some family to the airport, and Copperwood Tavern was perfectly on the way. From the start, things felt easy and relaxed. A few family members ordered the fried green tomatoes. Since they're Southern, they felt the tomatoes could've used a bit more batter--but that critique is very subjective. Flavor-wise, they still enjoyed them. Several of us had the onion soup. It leaned a little on the watery side, but it was still comforting and did its job warming us up on a cold day. My mom ordered the farmer's salad with squash, and that maple mustard vinaigrette? Chef's kiss. The flavors paired beautifully and made the dish shine. A few family members ordered the tavern burger, which was huge--easily enough for two meals. I went with the grilled rosemary chicken, which was flavorful, well-cooked, and very satisfying. We didn't even make it to dessert because everyone was full, which says a lot. The ambiance was very holiday-focused and cozy, service was efficient without being rushed, and parking is metered with a two-hour limit. Overall, a solid stop with comforting food, generous portions, and a warm atmosphere. Copperwood Tavern proves that sometimes the quieter spots are absolutely worth the visit.

The visit was unique, the story is unique and the food is unique! Let's do this! Established in 1950 or 1954 (reports vary but the sign on the building says 1954), Weenie Beenie was a modest hot dog stand serving hot dogs and beans. It was started by two brothers, Carl and Bill Staton. Bill happened to be an incredible and ultimately famous traveling pool player who went by the name... you guessed it... Weenie Beenie! He won 27k in Arkansas (which is a LOT of money in the 1950's) and used the money to finance the hot dog stand's growth! He appeared on television, played hustlers across the country, and backed other hustlers while living the pool and entrepreneur life. During the 50's, a period of entrenched segregation in Virginia, Weenie Beenie distinguished itself by hiring black employees on the same terms as whites when most white‑owned businesses would not hire blacks at all. This made Weenie Beenie a rare example of early workplace integration in Arlington and a meaningful employer within the historically Black Green Valley community. Its reputation for fairness became a very important part of its legacy, remembered along with the food and its very colorful founder. We popped over and found a 70+ year old walk-up stand with a colorful, diverse and engaging set of customers and friendly service. In faded letters on the front wall to the left are the 10 commandments! No breaking any divine rules at Weenie Beenie's! We all chatted and I learned the one guy comes every day! The old man in the suit was very polite and reserved. The younger Latin and black clientele were fun and engaging and we joked around quite a bit. Another older man was as 38-year veteran of the armed service! Thank you sir! I heard some stories... Of course, we ordered half-smokes! They are well-seasoned half-pork, half beef, smoked sausages that are truly incredible. Weenie Beenie's are unique and delicious! Life is good with a historic, unique, fun and respectful half smoke.

I was the only customer. It didn't look promising, but I figured I could order something and take it home. I looked up at the electronic monitor to see if there was a menu, but it just was displaying an outdoor scene. Then I noticed a woman sitting in the corner on a stool intently fiddling with her phone. I ordered the cheese egg biscuit sandwich, which came in at $10. Let me tell you, the portion size was generous, definitely enough for two meals. The biscuit was fluffy, buttery, and had just a touch of sweetness, which paired perfectly with the savory cheese eggs. I always ask for cheese eggs when I eat out, and most places miss the mark. Not here. They got it exactly right. Coffee-wise, it was simple: basic drip with International Delight creamer. Nothing fancy, but honestly, it hit the spot and fit the vibe. The ambiance really sealed the experience. A smooth R\&B playlist floated through the space, adding to the cozy, feel-good atmosphere. It was a refreshing contrast to the more sterile, minimalist coffee shops I'm used to back home in Sacramento. All in all, Milk and Honey Cafe delivered on food, flavor, and feeling. If you're in the Alexandria area and craving soulful comfort food with a solid vibe, this spot is a must.
