Here, you can order savory pies (think meat pies) and sweet ones from chocolate to berry. For just a few dollars, I ordered to go a slice of their chocolate pie. Since it was in the fridge, it was very cold, but so tasty. It's like a chocolate chess pie and truly the best I've had. Piping hot steamy crispy savory pies. This place is a little hidden gem in Alexandria. As far as I know, this is the only place in the area serving up authentic New Zealand pies. I was excited to discover this place as it provided a nice break from the overabundance of american, chinese, and mexican cuisines in this area. I ordered the steak, mushroom, and garlic pie. The crispy golden crust was dusted with little bits of toasty onion like an everything bagel. The inside was filled with massive chunks of meat and gravy. The flavor was a little one note at first, but then the subtle garlic flavor started hitting after the 2nd or 3rd bite. It was yummy and satisfied my craving although I might opt for one of the best sellers next time. In case you're curious, those customer favorites include: roast lamb, steak & cheese, chicken curry, spicy veggie, and ham bacon egg & cheese. I'm an Aussie, so meat pies are like mother's milk to me. Meat pies Downunder are what hamburgers are to the USA -- they're everywhere but there are a lot of awful ones. Still, when you know where the good ones are, there's a devoted following! I gather it's the same in New Zealand; that's where this chef's from. I've ordered savory pies, and even pasties, across the US. Usually it's an Australian, New Zealand or English person behind it. There aren't a lot of places that make them here and most are pretty grim. Sometimes you find a pie with decent pastry ... much less often, a decent filling ...these are the only savory pies I've found that excel in both. The puff pastry on these pies is my ideal for meat pies (as opposed to short crust pastry). It's flavorful and wonderfully light without being too flaky. There are a boat load of pie flavors and I've tried a lot of them but the ones that are my favorites are the steak varieties... steak & cheese, steak & stout, steak garlic mushroom and steak bacon and blue cheese. The steak is chunky, flavorful and tender -- no gristle! -- and there's a decent amount of it. $7 per 7.5oz hand pie is a good deal to me, based on the quality. In fact, I'd gladly pay more for a "premium" pie with even more filling. I've never visited the store but they go by Kiwi Kuisine pies online and can be shipped to you by ordering from the web site (or ordering from Wholefoods, although you'll need to put a special order in if you want more than 1). They ship frozen perfectly, just reheat in the oven (microwaving is allowed but not ideal imho) in 30 minutes, and are the perfect comfort food, winter or summer. I pair them with a salad and it's a simple and delicious meal. Most Aussies slather their meat pie with tomato sauce (ketchup to you) but these taste so good, I often skip it. Walked by this place a couple times, kind of tucked in a plaza off Eisenhower (next to a large doggy daycare), decided to check it out. I decided to go with the Chicken Curry Pie out of the many different options from Lamb, Steak, and even a breakfast pie. The Chicken Curry Pie was delicious, nice tasty crust and inside was full of flavor. Chicken, curry, peas all done up like a delicious Pot Pie. But not like ones you get from Banquet (way, way better). Great for quick lunch or snack, not terribly overpriced at $7 and change (including tax). Kiwi Pies are a delight. Upon walking in you are engulfed in New Zealand warmth, color, and flavors with authentic and fresh pies! Being new to the shop, it's nice that information sheets tell you a little about why the shop was founded. Customer service is fantastic! The owner's wife was just so welcoming and knowledgeable. She knew everything about her pies and can answer all your questions. The owner informed me all the pies are Nut Free, and have a unique way of sweetening their pies that makes them not too sweet which I appreciated. You can tell they love what they do, and if I know anything LOVE is the key ingredient in a good pie. The store is relatively hidden away right on Eisenhower. They have a few parking spots out front solely for patrons of the Kiwi Pie Shop so rest assured you're safe getting immersed in the world of pie. It's nice to know they have fresh sweet and savory, slice or whole pies baked for walk-in customers. They also offer frozen individual ones to take home and bake at your own leisure for a quick lunch or large ones for holidays etc. All options are available upon walking in. They were not short of options which I was so thrilled to find. I was so fantastically overwhelmed I just needed to try them all. I specifically had a sweet tooth so I can only review based off of the sweet pies. They showcase their fresh creations and it's tough to say no. I was advised that instead of getting a slice of each (Which they can warm up for your eating pleasure), they have a deal to get a whole pie with 7 slices of each you select. You can customize it to your specifications which is ideal for trying out the shop or bringing favorites home :) The fresh juices are also amazing! They allow you to sample them too which I loved. I bought two! Highly recommend the green juice and the ginger lemonade. I will now go slice by slice: -Hokey Pokey apple pie- nice thick apple slices with a cinnamon taste. Crust is amazing and unlike anything I've ever had. Not lacking in any area. Very authentic not at all generic or plain. You just can't get this at a store. Not too sweet, definitely a classic favorite. -key lime- one of my personal life goals is to find the best key lime pie in VA. I found it pretty sour and limey which is something I find a lot of slices lack. Maybe I need a better medium...not 10/10 on this guy. -heartbreaker slice- (berry pie with thin layer of chocolate underneath) the bitter chocolate evens out the tartness and it's a great bite with flakey crust. -peach- the crumble on this was the best part, also the thick peach slices!! -lemon cherry- true to lemon taste with chunks of real fruit. Incredible. -piña colada- the cream is full of coconut flakes and pineapple pieces. Very rich and creamy! While it was the last one I would've thought to try, it stood out! This little pie shop is a hidden gem, nestled in an innocuous plaza of miscellaneous stores. Easy to miss, but you should not miss out! We got the roasted lamb pie and vegemite beef and cheese for takeout. The crust on both pies was flaky and buttery, and they came out steaming hot. The lamb included a generous portion of meat, though we found it to be a little undersalted. The beef and cheese, however - perfectly seasoned and so delicious... a must try! We appreciated the great customer service. The gentleman who took our order explained that one of our pies came out of the oven collapsed, so they took it upon themselves to provide us with an additional, non-collapsed pie. We probably would not have noticed the first was collapsed as this was our first time trying these pies (and it still tasted amazing), but admire the high standards to which they hold themselves - a rare find these days. read more

Soo I came here with high hopes. I read all of the reviews and went in with an entire game plan of sweet and savory pies that I'd try. Unfortunately, when I got there (1.5 hours before they were to close), they only had 4 savory pies and 3-4 flavors of sweet pies. You'd figure that they'd have more of a variety and quantity... especially because I came much earlier than they were to close. That was so disappointing. There were other pies in the display, but if they weren't sliced, we couldn't try them. I wanted to try the passion fruit and the heartbreaker, but she wasn't allowed to cut them. What's the point of displaying something to me that I can't have? The person who checked us out anyways said the passion fruit pie was meh at best... If your own employee says that about a flavor, I guess I didn't miss much. Savory: purchased 2 savory pies, the steak and cheese and the veggie pie. The steak and cheese was meh and honestly I wouldn't recommend. It isn't worth $6.50 to me. The spicy veggie pie was good, not the best, but the best of the ones we got. Still not worth $6.50. You can buy an Amy's frozen pot pie for less than $5 and it tastes better than this. Sweet: I got the chocolate pie and the apple pie and I'm sorely disappointed. Firstly, the apple pie I got looked half empty/broken. Like, where's the other half? The chocolate pie looked so dry and didn't really look fresh at all. The pie's crust should be crispy and flaky, yet this one's seemed a bit underdone. The "chocolate" itself tasted like the glaze of a donut. It was clear the first ingredient in making the custard was sugar, not chocolate. With the apple pie, it was such a mistake. The apples were layered without any helping glaze or sauce, sour, and so saggy. It didn't feel like cooked apples. Just raw apples soaked in a cinnamon sugar mixture that dried into them and made them soggy. We threw these away. McDonald's apple pie satisfies in ways this never could. My recommendation would be to avoid this place. The prices are beyond expensive and the quality isn't there. I was really excited to try a pie place in Alexandria, but this isn't it. I'm sad to say it, but the pies at the chain Bob's & Edith's diner are much more better. My review isn't meant to bash this place, but to let people know that these previous reviews aren't representative of the quality there. I expected so much because of them, and I'm so let down now. Well dang. Just had the steak-and-stout pie for dinner. I'd never partaken of Kiwi before though the ladyfriend was a fan. Crust - light and flaky without being crumbly or greasy or heavy. Filling - not stingy with the bite-sized steak chunks and good quality meat, as not stringy or chewy but very tender. Good gravy. Not heavily salty but a rich complex taste. Loads better than any store pot pie blah you'd get. Ladyfriend said she's never had a bad one, either dessert or savory, though steak and stout is a fave. I just tucked into my steak and ale pie and - wow! - so yummy. Crust was perfectly flaky, gravy was just the right amount and perfect flavor, and the meat was tender. I bought a few more pies to share with friends and also a slice of creamy pina colada pie. Looking forward to more pie!! UPDATE: For the first time ever, we bought pies for Thanksgiving this year instead of making them. The Kiwi Pie Shop really came through for us! The Sweet P pie has a wonderfully complex blend of sweet potato and pumpkin. The Chocolate Chess Pie was even better, with a beautifully textured chocolate filling. Both had perfect flaky crusts. We bought the pies frozen, moved them from freezer to fridge 24 hours before the meal, and to the counter 1 or 2 hours before serving. We kept them in the pie boxes until serving. The Kiwi Pie Shop has a SOLID menu of conventional and slightly different choices, for both savory and sweet options. Full size or "single serving," fresh or frozen, they are incredibly accommodating. Also, they really came through for me at Thanksgiving time; they had a "thanksgiving pie" (turkey, veggies, cranberries filling), and then I pick up an apple pie for my thanksgiving of 3. Full bellies and plenty of delicious leftovers. Seriously, this place is awesome! I really wanted to LOVE this pie! I read the reviews and thought I had to try it! I walked in it's a small space but well organized.they had two employees working and the staff greeted me upon entry. I couldn't decide between the key lime pie or peach pie. They both were recommended but it decided on the peach. The ingredients were fresh and the crust decent butt the pie was over powered with cinnamon. The crust was decent but not great. Come on, everyone, who doesn't like a good, meaty hand pie? That's what I thought, no one. One day in October I realized I needed a tire patched. Ugh. So I went to a place in Alexandria and, while I was pulling up, I noticed this pie place. Did I mention that I was hungry? So, while I waited for my tire to be patched (which took like 15 minutes and no waiting - but that's another amazing story), I headed over. They've got pies they can warm to go, sweet pies in the case, and a freezer full of hand pies to go. And to go they went. I loaded up on freezer pies, who cares that my freezer has no room for pies (i made room) and got one beef pie to go. No regrets. The pie I had to go hit the spot, it was delicious. The crust is great, the filling is great. It was great. Over time I've tried a bunch of other ones that have been in my freezer. Beef and Stout, Shepards Beef Pie, Lamb Pie, Vegetable, Chicken. I've never been disappointed. You can microwave or oven bake them. They're good both ways. Obviously the crust will be better in the oven. But, sometimes time is an issue. Great for bringing to work. Wow! Terrific meat pies. We had the beef and cheese hand pies for lunch, and then treated ourselves to the lamb pie for dinner. They were both delicious! The crust is flaky and delicious. Read all the good reviews about this place and decided to visit. Wife and I went as soon as they opened up on a Saturday at noon and we were first customers. Young lady at the counter seemed pretty disinterested to be at work. We weren't greeted as we came in. The countertop case was 100% empty, coffee machine was off, nothing to drink but bottled water and they were not selling sweet pies by the slice, just whole pies. My whole game plan on getting 7 slices of sweet pie was shot dead. We ordered 3 savory pies. Took about 15 minutes, got our food and we left. Ate the pies shortly after and the crust on the roasted lamb pie was concrete hard. We paid approx $28 for our meal. Doubtful this place will ever see my wife and me again. Sorry. Can't recommend.
