Kleine Nachtrevue lacked professionalism, was poorly attended, and had performances that were lacking.
We were ushered into Kleine Nachtrevue tonight (Weds.) for the 23:30 show for 20 euro to a little dog yapping away at us. We realized later on the dog was either the owner's or a performer's dog and it was allowed to run loose in the bar. They literally ran around between acts trying to catch it shouting, "Fifi! Fifi!" Really? I love dogs, but this is no place for one.
Hoping for a good show, we shrugged this off, paid for our seats, and were sat near the front of the room. We were the only ones there beside about 4-6 other patrons unless you count the three people sitting at the bar in the back who, it turns out, were the owner and two friends chatting and laughing loudly as they drank. My friend and I moved to the bar at one point to see if they would engage with us at all (because they hadn't except to take out initial drink order). Alas, they continued to socialize among themselves and ignore us.
For the first performance, the girl had a beautiful body and great form as a dancer, but her hair was in a sloppy ponytail and she looked like she had slapped on some eyeliner in under a minute. Her look was incomplete and lacking effort. Then we saw her about 2 minutes after her performance emerge from the back, go behind the bar, and start cleaning glasses and chatting with the owner. This same situation repeated for the other performers: the young man who greeted us performed then went behind the bar, the woman bartender performed then was back behind the bar again. Eventually they were all sharing drinks with the owner between numbers.
It was as if this were a dress rehearsal we had just walked in on or as if our presence forced them, dragging their feet, to have to give a performance when they'd rather just be behind the bar drinking with each other.
Sorry, but I didn't pay 20 euro to see you "do a little diddy" then get back to drying glasses and chasing the dog around the bar.
We asked for our money back and the owner refused and said, "This is how the night show is." Well okay then. We won't be back and we won't tell anyone to waste their money or time here. If you want REAL burlesque, try the Slipper Room in NYC. $5-10 and you get a muthuh fuckin' SHOW and you'll be treated like royalty and not a nuisance. Kleine Nachtrevue made me sad for what cabaret has become in Berlin. Blegh. read more
