While I really enjoyed coming here after a night out on the town...I'm not sure if I'd enjoy it as much otherwise. It's almost like a neighborhood cafeteria which had a wide assortment of options. The woman behind the counter was extremely gracious in helping me through my weak (read: non-existent) German language skills and directing me to what I really wanted, currywurst. My friend and I ordered a few items to share and they were exactly the greasy, delicious food we needed. I don't think they'd take home any culinary awards but it was the perfect meal accompanied with a fresh beer and great people watching. There was an older couple exchanging conversation with a group of college aged kids next to them and it was a friendly vibe throughout. At one point a homeless man came in and one of the employees recognized him, came over, said hello, buttoned up his jacket and sent him on his way. It was a little action that really resonated with me how generous she was. My experience was great coming here after a night of karaoke and I'd recommend the same to you for some good food to help you recap the night with some friends. read more

I came to Kleine Pause three times on my trip to Hamburg I liked it so much. It's got a diner / neighorhood joint feeling going on. Extensive menu covering a lot of staples. I enjoyed the currywurst and french fried. I ordered schnitzel on my second visit and was a bit disappointed by the fry. I'm not sure that Kleine Pause is really worth 5 stars (the food certainly isn't) but I'm gonna give it 5 stars for the general atmostphere and staff. I just enjoy going there. It's often too busy, I can't converse with the staff, and in the past have been given a frozen bun on my burger, but I'll keep going back. Once, a German friend convinced me to have the frikadelle on my bun instead of a regular burger. Don't make that mistake. In fact, steer clear of frikadelle entirely whilst in Germany. read more

I'm still astonished by this place ! We were a little surprised at first because the place in itself has nothing fancy at all, it's your regular neighborhood bar, but we decided to give it a try anyway. I took a schnitzel with fries, and my boyfriend took a currywurst with fries and a side of onion rings. I was really impressed by the prices, so low !! This diner is located at St. Pauli and is an amazing place to visit to catch a nice hamburger or steak or salad or whatever you please from their menu and hang out with friends or family over a nice game of soccer. I simply adore their burgers along with their generous serving of pommes with a thick douse of mayo! I try to visit the place once a week, and absolutely love it. Kleine Pause is one of the few places left with good, basic food and reasonable pricing. The small break, as you might translate it (but please - don't), serves as a pit-stop on the way from Schanze to Kiez or vice versa. And a pit-stop it really is: The food will cure your hang-over and make you feel good (tasty and stuffing) and bad (calories!) at the same time. But the good feeling surely prevails, trust me on that one. One of the most remarkable features are the two main female actresses behind the counter. No matter who, they will serve you both food and honesty. If you're polite, they'll play along, if you're not, be cautious. One of the most honest and basic places Hamburg has to offer. I feel Wester the Molester was a little harsh in her 3 star rating - Kleine Pause is one of those places you can't fail to like because of the lovely staff who all act a bit like they're your mum. It's also open really late (just last night I was here for an emergency bratwurst at 2am after having a nightmare journey to Hamburg from London via Berlin!) Wasn't sure where to get a decent burger but this place hit it off. If you're coming from America like me and speak 0% German, come here and all you have to say is cheeseburger. BOOM. All food is made to order right in front of you. The standard cheeseburger comes with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, mayo, ketchup, and fried onions. You'll have to ask for pickles. Waitis this a bar? A fast food stop? Mid 90's music video on-demand rest stop? I'm not sure, but whatever it is I found the place to be extremely entertaining. The lines for the curry wurst and 2 Euro Caipis seems to blend into each other, but if you end up hereyou probably couldn't tell the difference between the two anyhow. Nothing special about this place, really, but I fell for the middle-aged, kind ladies (one of whom had very impressive pink hair) behind the bar. It's really small with a friendly atmosphere. Probably a great place to watch German soccer - it was packed with enthusiastic St Pauli fans when I was here. I retreated to their outdoors section, which is covered by a marquise and pleasant enough. They do food too, run of the mill greasy pub-grub, and a decent range of beers. Not bad. read more
