Whether or not you are religious the story of Knock is fascinating, especially the story of Monsignor Horan the famous pastor of Knock who managed to convince the Irish government to build an airport near the site, no small feat as Knock is in a remote part of Mayo. The original purpose of the airport was to bring pilgrims to Knock, however it is now an international airport, offering flights to many destinations throughout Ireland, Europe and the UK.
Fr Horan also developed the Basilica and brought the Pope to the Knock in 1979. His story alone is worth the visit! If you are not a believer you cannot dispute the miracles Fr Horan performed! A museum is located on the grounds not far from the Basilica, it tells the story of Knock, a Cafe is in the same building. People of faith make pilgrimages to Knock. There is a building dedicated only to confessions. The property also features the Knock House Hotel (a short walk from the Basicila through the beautifully landscaped grounds). which is,no doubt, the nicest accommodation for those pilgrims who can afford it. http://www.knockhousehotel.ie If you are looking for a comtemplative break, you might enjoy a stay at Knock. read more
