Although the number of decisions and number of options for each decision could have been intimidating--since this was my first experience with MTM--Maggie was a great guide through the process. I had a blast designing my attire, and after the garments were delivered, Maggie arranged for a few minor tweaks to ensure the fit was perfect. Overview: Knot Standard is a high end bespoke tailor, originally founded in New York, located in a 3rd floor private office in Union Square that crafts custom fitted menswear and select ladies' suits. The Service: Beautiful and exceptionally friendly women serving you scotch, measuring you, and then even arranging for personal delivery to your office for you. Jocelyn is the best. This is as good as it gets here in the city. The Clothing: Suits made of wool, wool + silk, or wool + cashmere. Shirts made of 100% thick cotton with various textures and patterns to choose from. The Fit: Perfect. I'm a very slim Asian guy who has never been able to find clothing that fits him and finally Knot Standard comes to the rescue. I'll never go back to standard clothing! Conclusions: If you are a city professional looking for the luxury menswear experience, and don't mind the premium pricing (check their website), I can recommend Knot Standard without any reservations. That being said, the pricing is painfully high and the materials they use are not necessarily in the same luxury class that their pricing would imply ($195-345 for a shirt). I'm tempted to push my review down to a 3-star because of the pricing but my experience here was so pleasant I feel too guilty to do so. read more

Jocelyn and her team are awesome to work with. In the past, I've gone to Nordstrom to buy suits, shirts, etc. I wanted to try out bespoke and Joce had just gotten up and running. The prices are completely reasonable and they provide a far greater value than some other custom tailors in the Bay Area. I'm 6'1" with short legs and a longer torso which always makes buying off the rack really challenging. Jocelyn walked me through the entire process and laid out every combination I could ever want for a custom suit on an awesome interface. The cut is terrific, the salmon color is perfect. Just had my first fitting after ordering a Reda grey fabric sport coat and white cotton shirt. A few very minor and expected tweaks, but overall the jacket and shirt fit were excellent. The details on the jacket and workmanship are superb. I like how picky Jocelyn is regarding the fit, style and function. I've ordered custom, (shirts) and have been less than happy. I've also spent plenty on very expensive glued suits and jackets. That's right, some costly suits are glued together! Of course, Knott Standard's are full horsehair and canvas lined, which allow the jacket to move with you. Jocelyn is great to work with and provides solid sartorial advice. Absolutely impressive experience! I long disliked wearing dress clothes, but work a regular office job so they are a necessity for me. The clothes never fit quite right and I often felt uncomfortable and dissatisfied in the way I looked. After many years in office culture, this dissatisfaction finally led me to try and find a pair of trousers without belt loops. Belts were always something I found inconvenient, and I thought they should be unnecessary if the clothes fit properly. Through some research I learned about bespoke clothing and made-to-measure. Many of the true bespoke offerings were too expensive and the made-to-measure clothes were cheaper but often had mixed or poor reviews. Then I found Knot Standard, a kind of hybrid between true bespoke and made-to measure. I made an appointment at the San Francisco store with Gino, had a fitting, then ordered a shirt and some trousers (without belt loops of course, or even pull tabs on the side!) When I first tried on the clothes I was immediately impressed with what I saw. I then realized this is what the business executives had been wearing all those years that I would look at and say to myself, "What is their secret? Man, they look good!" My first dress shirt fit fantastic! However, being a novice during my first fitting, I was so excited I forgot to sit down in my trousers. I have large muscles in my thighs and when I went to work that week and sat down, the trousers were too tight in the thigh area and almost ripping at the seam. I emailed Gino about the problem and he responded within minutes indicating he could fix them for free! So I went back to the store, dropped off the trousers for alteration, and had my pattern updated in the Knot Standard computer system for future purchases. After the trousers were altered, they fit perfect while standing or sitting down! I have since replaced my entire business wardrobe with Knot Standard shirts and trousers. After wearing custom tailored clothes I just couldn't go back to off-the-rack. Every single article of clothing I own from Knot Standard (I have ten shirts and five trousers now) all fit great, just like that first pair. Once your pattern is in their system, it makes buying new clothes a breeze. Friday's are business casual days at my office, but I often just wear the same attire as any other day because it makes me feel so good and confident wearing Knot Standard! My only regret is I didn't know about Knot Standard sooner. I spent so much money over the years on poorly made dress clothes that I've since discarded. These clothes are a great investment! We checked out a few different bespoke suit companies and Knot Standard was far and away our favorite. When you go into their fitting room, it's a very personalized experience. We had various ideas about what we wanted in a suit, but we were also looking for someone that could provide great advice and help us understand all the various customizations that are available. I needed a "Bandhgala" jacket for my wedding and the one I got made in India, in 4 days (yes, in India you can do that), was just not the style I wanted. This is essentially a suit with a Chinese or Nehru collar and is also known as a Jodhpuri suit (https://www.rathore.com/the-milano-chambray-bandhgala-suit). So, after I'd been told it was most likely not something possible to do in the city*, I was surprised when I called Knot Standard and they said, "Yes, sure we do that." I made the appointment online, with Gino, who it turns out is the manager of the store. Upon reaching the store Gino was already prepared with options for me, from reasonable to upgrade to high end. Keep in mind that it was a beach wedding and I needed an ivory colored jacket and options for Ivory in wool are slim pickings. We walked through the available options and he actually happened to have a regular suit in a similar tone so I got a sense of how it would look as it can be difficult to decide this kind of color based on a swatch. Then he proceeded to take measurements and was very aware of what I wanted, a modern take, but at the same time gave an honest opinion regarding not taking things too far. He was also honest about the fact that "he" himself had not designed a jacket like that time was critical (yes, I was a bit lazy on this). We chose buttons, 2 sets, one for the wedding in fancy Gold and the other in a matching color as I wanted to turn the coat into a dinner jacket post wedding. Great selection there too. All good then and we wen with the upgrade option for the cloth. Their jackets are fully canvased so they make for a better drape. We wanted a half lined jacket but went with full lining as with the lighter color partial lining shows through the jacket (tip for any of you considering a light jacket for beach weddings). When the jacket arrived there was a mistake and Gino called me immediately as he knew there was very little wiggle room due to a time crunch. The error was in the number of buttons, there were 8 and there were supposed to be 5. It still looked great but could not be worn as a dinner jacket any more. Gino, was very apologetic and remedied the situation promptly. As always for a first jacket with any tailor there were some alterations which were done very quickly. I got a white shirt that fits like a glove, a suit that looks fantastic and most importantly my Fiance really liked it. Overall, I think Knot standard gets you what you want with excellent customer service. They are not the cheapest MTM store, but they are catering to a different market. If you want personalized service, competitive pricing and quality then go with these guys. They also have promotions a couple of times a year where you can get an overcoat or blazer etc. I don't know if they will have them again anytime soon but I know these have happened a few times since. * Unless you go fully bespoke, which is an expensive option, but a tailor who has never done such a jacket is a high risk especially given the time crunch and the fact that it was MY wedding. Also, the good Indian stores will get the jacket made in India and shipped all the way here and there is added risk there especially if you want something very modern and very trendy, and the cheaper Indian stores are very "traditional". read more

I almost gave it 4 stars just because the location is a little odd, tucked away on the third flood of a building with little on the storefront side. But that was just old familiarity of the Men's Warehouse/Jos A Bank experience. Getting personally measured and tailored suits at a place like Knot Standard is wholly different from getting off the rack and having it tailored at a chain. There is a lot more attention to detail, a lot more specificity, and the final result shows. Jocelyn herself is quite a character as well. Every time I go in, she has a new and interesting fashion ensemble of her own, and you get the sense that she just lives for this stuff. Fashion is in her blood, and that gives you a good feeling of security, knowing that when she gives you advice on style, it's time to take some notes. It's not often you get to work with someone who lives and breathes their work, but when you do, it's a joy. The pricing is steeper than off the rack of course, but when you figure in the cost of actually getting it tailored correctly - it's not that bad. Add to that, if you value your time then getting it right the first time makes it even better. When you're ready to step up your attire Knot Standard is the way to go. read more

Where do I start...I have been a custom shirt guy for years. When I lived in India/China I had my first foray in to custom clothing, but it was hard to find the same experience in the US. I've tried a few lower cost "same quality" online tailors in the US, but have had most of those shirts fall apart after a few wears. When I met Jocelyn and heard about Knot Standard I was curious to see what their shirts were like. Turns out they were great and so was Jocelyn... super helpful. I have a long torso (and uneven shoulders) so finding dress shirts that fit me in the shoulders and in length is difficult. So far so good with Knot Standard. Ordering more soon! read more

I started working with Monica about a year ago and have had an excellent experience. I am not the most knowledgeable about fashion, and she's been super helpful in making style, color, and fit suggestions for my line of work and for special occasions. I happened to be visiting SF for our first meeting but have been working remotely with her from the East Coast since. I was a little apprehensive about working remotely at first, but she's made the process very easy. Since I had my measurement taken while I was in-store, the clothes that I've gotten since fit very well. Monica's been very responsive and flexible with her time. We often sync up via FaceTime to go over my orders and then again after the clothes arrive to make sure things fit correctly. I've gotten dress shirts and a couple of custom coats so far and looking forward to getting some new blazers in a couple of weeks. My wardrobe has definitely been upgraded over the past year. The only reason I didn't give a 5-star review is that the prices do tend to be a bit on the high side. With that said, I realize that you get what you pay for in most cases, and I have been happy with the clothes I've received so far. I did have one minor quality issue early on, but it's nice that Knot Standard will pay for small alterations to be done locally so things don't have to get shipped back. They will even help you find a local tailor if needed. The company also runs special discounts throughout the year, and I've been able to take advantage of some them to get great pricing on some really nice pieces. read more
