    Miso pork Koja
    Richard M.

One of my FAVs. I have trouble deciding between the miso pork and the short rib Koja. Always spectacular. It pops, it crunches, it snaps, it soothes, it drips down your chin. Love the fries too. The atmosphere could be a bit more inviting.

I've had this chain at another location before and always thought the food was solid. This spot is near a bunch of other food places and had a decent amount of tables to sit at, which was nice. I got the beef rice bowl this time. The rice was a little too sticky for me, but not a huge deal. The seasoning and sauce on the beef and salad were really good! Super flavorful, tho a bit salty if you're eating it without the rice to balance it out. The kimchi had a good crunch and texture, but flavor-wise it was just okay. We also shared the kamikaze fries, and those were really good. Fries were crispy, not greasy, and the beef was flavorful and not dry at all. The sauce on top was tasty, but we kind of wished it was a little more saucy.

Even though I have been to a Koja before, I had not tried a Zen Koja before, now, I regret not trying it sooner because it was really good. The service was good, and the ambiance was very casual. The only bummer is that they do not have restrooms.

Awesome service and great food. I placed an order on Uber eats and it was Buy one get one free. I got the short ribs. The portions were great and the flavor was great. I would definitely order here again.

love koja for their kamikaze fries (10/10) but the beef taco was so unappetizing. it was soggy and soaked in oil. just lifting it up the oil dripped down all over my arm and was pooled in the container. would not order again. this was terrible (2/10). the beef rice bowl is pretty good, simple and filling with good balance between veggies, rice, and meat for the cost (7.5/10)

Delicious! Ordered pickup and came on a weekday afternoon and the restaraunt was completely empty. Pickup went smoothly and the food was still warm and fragrant by the time I arrived home. I got the braised pork bowl, and KoJa did not skimp on the portions! There was a heaping pile of fluffy white rice accompanied with a generous amount of tender braised pork, both of which, when paired with the sweet coconut sauce, were delicious. The kimchi tasted surprisingly fresh and had the perfect crunch to it. Overall, this place is definitely worth a try and a revisit.

Beef bowl with more of everything else than beef. This is what we found when we opened our takeout container.

We have ordered from this restaurant MANY times in the past through Uber Eats. Food has always been delicious with great portion sizes. We usually had leftovers for the next day! Tonight, when my young kids opened their orders, they told me I needed to call Uber as their food was missing some stuff. We ordered 3 full size chicken bowls and 2 full size beef bowls. We got 3 TINY STRIPS OF CHICKEN in each of the chicken bowls and about 2, maybe 2.5 spoons of beef in each beef bowl. The rest of the entree were large scoops of rice and mixed greens and some kimchi. I'm suspecting that since they offered a buy one get one free for the beef bowls, they overly skimped on the meat portions of every dish.

One line review: Decent but grade incomplete. This is Korean-inspired fast food and has to be judged on that basis. But for what it is, it is decent. Fair portions at good prices is a baseline for me for fast food. Value is paramount, and the value here is decent. The tacos were tasty, and so that gives it a little bump in my opinion. I would have given this 3.5 stars if that had been an option. The inside of the restaurant is non-descript, and the service was adequate. I parked around the corner at a meter, though one might be able to find free parking if one knows where to look (I don't anymore). The reason the grade is incomplete was that I did not actually order the koja -- a kind of Korean sandwich using rice patties for the bread -- a ridiculous oversight on my part. I really need to do that before I give this place a final grace, but so far, so good. Bottom line: I would eat here again when near campus.

I've had Koja Kitchen a few times at their Cupertino location, and it's good if you're craving Asian fusion. I always order the same thing, which is the Korean short rib bowl. Since my work was expensing lunch I also ordered the Kamikaze fries. The short rib bowl comes with furikake seasoned rice and spring mix. The short rib is tender but is on the sweet side. The seasoned rice helps balance out the sweetness. The Kamikaze fries are waffle fries with minced Korean BBQ beef, kimchi, Japanese mayo, red sauce, and green onions. The fries are good, but they are heavy. The beef and sauce on the fries are very sweet. So there is a lot of sweetness going on having a rice bowl and fries. I would recommend getting the fries to share with a group.

Tasty little spot offering fusion food. I got the kamikaze fries: beef, all the trimmings, added a fried egg and extra sauce. The fries were full of flavor and presentation was bomb. Check it out!

The food here is so tasty. I usually like more plain traditional food. But I tried this place on a whim and did not regret it. The food is unique and flavorful. Sweet, savory, and just the right amount of spicy. The signature musubi is creative and delicious. Plenty of meat and protein. Will order again.

On the pricier side for sure-- around $17 for Kami kaze fries and a chicken burger but their flavors hit right! I loved the crispiness of the kami kaze fries with the sauce and the beef bits on top, it was delicious! The chicken sandwich was a chicken sandwich with "Asian" sauces which put a nice spin on it for me! Would I order it again-- if Koja was the ONLY place open, but it was good to check out!

Best koja location - always excellent portions made well very efficient. Parking is horrible in Berkeley but other than that this is the best Kojo kitchen in the Bay!

I ordered a couple of their popular dishes, the KAOKAO Char Siu Set and the Chong Qing Noodles, and both were fantastic. The char siu was so tasty, nicely cooked with most of the fat rendered (a big plus since unrendered fat especially on BBQ is a pet peeve of mine). It had that satisfying chew, a subtle smoky char, and a sweet-savory black bean glaze that tied everything together. The rice and pickled cucumbers on the side were a great balance to the in your face flavors of the pork. The Chong Qing Noodles were another highlight. You can tell the noodles are handmade as they are springy, chewy, and full of texture. The staff actually recommended that I get them uncooked since I was ordering to go, so I could boil them at home for a few minutes to keep the perfect bite and they were totally right. The broth was rich and balanced, with nutty sesame paste, a gentle kick from chili oil, a bit of crunch from peanuts, and some fresh bok choy for contrast. Everything was packed thoughtfully for takeout and still tasted amazing even after a longer drive. Overall, a really pleasant experience with great food, great service, and a place I'll definitely return to next time I find myself around Berkeley!

I decided to try the $13.99 Samgyeopal Ssam-jang, which featured grilled pork belly mixed with veggie soybean paste topped with fried onion, roasted seaweed, and sesame oil, all over rice (Photo 7). The bowl was a strange contrast of textures. Flavor wise, there were more misses than hits. The pork belly was overcooked with the chewy meat rendered almost inedible. The rice was weirdly mushy like it was sitting in lukewarm water far too long. The rest of the ingredients were nondescript. Definitely a hard pass on this bowl in the future. When you walk in, you step into a vast, open concept restaurant where you can fully see into the entire kitchen and feel how everything connects into the space where you dine. I immediately notice that each table had a tiny sake bottle holding a mouthful of freshly picked wildflowers sitting on top. It spoke to my heart as I love reusing cool bottles just for the same purpose. My bf and I were greeted warmly and walked to our table. We arrived knowing what we wanted so we ordered straight away. My bf ordered the Pork Belly Tonkotsu and I had the Vegan Spicy Miso with tofu done 3 ways. My bf really enjoyed his ramen and said the meat was tender and flavorful, the broth "just right". My vegan ramen was pretty standard overall. I didn't find the broth to be very complex (it was solidly "miso") but I appreciated the texture of the noodles (they were absolutely perfect!) and the 3 types of tofu offered great variety- soft plain tofu, abura tofu (fried bean curd), and stewed bean curd. There were several distinct textures of tofu to savor: soft, crispy & creamy, firm. The owner, Stella, was on the floor as we headed up to pay for our meal. She was so kind to gift me an empty sake bottle after I complimented on the table decor. We learned about the painstaking patience required to open this location in Berekely and how passionate she and her staff are about the food they bring to the community. The orange juice was a little too sour and my mom had to add some sugar to improve the taste. The iced mocha was good, not too sweet. One thing to note the wait for our food took much longer than expected, and it may have been due to how busy it was. My mom opted to order the salmon yuzu benedict and I got an egg plate (scrambled eggs) with a side green salad. My mom mentioned the potatoes lacking salt but she enjoyed the salmon benedict. I thought the scrambled eggs were good, but slightly bland & needed salt and pepper. The side green salad was alright, but the vinaigrette had a bitter aftertaste. Overall, the meal was pretty good and timing wasn't the best. I'd likely return for brunch on a non-peak day. Definitely recommend joining the yelp waitlist prior to arriving if you can!

Came here for dinner with my sister and brother-in-law at their recommendation, and I can…read moredefinitely see why they keep coming back. The restaurant was packed and seating is pretty limited, so I'd highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time. The atmosphere is lively and energetic with casual Japanese eatery vibes, and service was friendly throughout the meal. Everything felt creative, rich in flavor, and very texture-focused. Here are the highlights: * Ankimo Mousse (monkfish liver) with sweet potato chips - Made with truffle paste, capers, and chives. Absolutely delicious. The mousse was rich and savory but surprisingly fluffy in texture -- honestly a savory girl's dream. The sweet potato chips added just enough sweetness and a snap to balance the richness of the liver. 9/10 * Bluefin Tuna & Tsubugai Sashimi Nuta - Bluefin tuna, sea snail, broccolini, and fresh wakame tossed in a sweet Kyoto yuzu miso vinaigrette. Kind of like a sashimi-seaweed salad. I really liked the vinaigrette and especially the texture of the sea snail. I'm not sure all the ingredients fully came together cohesively, but it was still enjoyable overall. 7.5/10 * Yuba (house-made tofu skin with ikura and uni) - Served as single bites on spoons. SO good. You can really taste the difference between house-made tofu skin and store-bought. It's much more delicate, creamy, and tender, with a mild soybean flavor that balanced the richness of the uni and salmon roe beautifully. The textures in this bite were incredible. 9.5/10 * Iberico Pork Jowl Skewer with miso marinade - I honestly prefer pork jowl over pork belly. The fat and meat are more integrated instead of layered, so every bite is tender, juicy, and flavorful with just the right amount of chew. So good. 9/10 * Clam & Cilantro Ramen - I've never had a ramen broth quite like this. It was slightly creamy and deeply flavored from the clams, and the cilantro added a lot of depth and freshness. The noodles had a great texture too -- chewy and bouncy. Everything worked together perfectly. 9/10 * Uni Carbonara Pasta - Pasta with parmesan, uni, and ikura. They do not skimp on the uni or roe here. Super creamy and rich with bursts of saltiness from the ikura. The texture was great, but I honestly wished it had just a tiny bit more salt to really make all the flavors pop. It was almost there for me. 7.5/10 * Desserts - We tried two desserts, including the sweet potato brûlée. Both were delicious. One had a silky panna cotta-like texture, while the sweet potato brûlée was creamy, lightly sweet, and had the perfect crackly sugar top. 9/10 Overall, such a fun meal with a lot of unique dishes and flavor combinations. There are still so many things on the menu I want to try next time. I'll definitely be back.

I've been to Kiraku twice before this visit, and I felt like the food quality was stronger prior…read more The food comes in a timely manner, staff is mindful to not fill your table as it's a small space. The standouts were the corn tempura, the sushi and the beef okonomiyaki. The skewers were good but not great; I felt the pork belly was a tad salty, and some of the pieces of the beef were slightly overcooked + chewy. The black cod was flaky but I wish it was marinated a bit more with the miso for stronger flavor. I wish I did not order the spring roll or the foil wrapped salmon. The spring roll was soggy bc the filling inside was so damp and lacked seasoning & flavor. The salmon was very dry, but the mushrooms were flavorful and juicy. Definitely recommend reservations or be ready to wait at least 45 minutes. The inside is quite small, tables as well, so be ready to sit pretty close to your neighboring patrons. Very lively atmosphere that can get loud, but could also be fun!
