Given how short-handed everyone is these days: How in the world was she and Desmond able to get their crew over here so soon to do our project (replace a dead mini split with a 3-pronged system). But they did it. And they came in, right on time as promised, and did all the work as explained, left our home absolutely SPOTLESS (I mean, really, it was cleaner than it was before!), and then left us with a brand-spanking new air-conditioner system in our home. Mike is wonderfully knowledgeable and skilled. He installed new split units at a very fair price, and partially repaired an existing older unit. At first he was extremely responsive and came out on a moment's notice to evaluate a problem and make small repairs. Lately however, scheduling has become a complete nightmare. Mike won't give a firm date to come out and finish the repairs, and then doesn't respond to emails or texts for weeks on end. I suspect he's overextended and doesn't have enough staff. But still, that's no way to keep customers cool. I realize that a small residential job doesn't compare with commercial work he might have going, but that's still not an excuse to blow off your client and not give a firm commitment. read more

I am very impressed with this company. Our air conditioner went out in the late afternoon on a Friday. When I called, I totally expected them to tell me they wouldn't be able to come out until Monday. I was surprised and pleased when they told me their guy could be out within the hour. He came out, found the problem and was able to replace the part the first thing the next morning. Just like last time, a day after I arrive back in Kona, my house's central AC goes kaput. I now have a 17-month-old who isn't used to Kona's heat and humidity and is sweating bullets. Mike at Kona Air Conditioning was fabulous. I called 12 companies and most didn't even answer the phone. Not only did Mike pick up the phone, but when I explained what the problem was, he said he would be over in about an hour. Who does that in this day and age? When he was running a little past an hour, he texted me to say he would be a little late, which is OK, you know, as long as you're informed. He quickly diagnosed my problem, which was the motor. Mike says this type of motor is quiet and efficient but it tends to be affected by salt air and needs to be replaced every 5 to 7 years, which is good to know about this type of Carrier AC. The whole bill, including parts and a new filter and labor was right around $700. Mike picked up the part, put it in on the same day, and my AC is working great. I love this company, and I am a very hard person to please, or so I hear . . . Don't bother calling all those other HVAC companies. Just call Mike. The first time our AC broke was an insanely hot night last year, as we live makai side in Kona. My asthma was in full effect and Mike Rooney responded very quickly when I reached out. In fact, the Yelp reviews Mike & Kona Air Conditioning had were what influenced me to call him first, and they were all spot on. He came out the next day, inspected the outside unit and everything in the attic. He found the part that had given out, replaced it (going to show that he is thorough and professional),and did a yearly maintenance that it was in desperate need of. I know from experience a lot of companies here could have gouged the bill because of the desperation factor: not Mike. The bill was incredibly reasonable and earned him a customer for life. Fast forward to this year when our aging unit had another hiccup. I want to truly truly thank Mike for coming out to check my Daiken split unit AC. My unit is 15 months old and I clean the filters every month, wipe down both wall mounted units& rinse the coils on the outside compressor. I'm a retired Kern County Fire Captain from Bakersfield Ca. All maintenance is performed on a monthly bases just like we carry out maintenance on a monthly Basis as we do at the fire station. Mike spent over 2 hrs checking my unit to fine out about the condensation drips from the living room unit. The unit is mounted to high on my vaulted ceiling & the humidity is very high. Mike checked the unit also checked the outside unit and all is ok, no major issues. The previous AC company came out and really did nothing, did not check the load ( amp), did not use any instruments to detect any leaks. From them I was told it would be about 300.00 to 400.00 dollars to fine a leak. THERE WAS NO LEAK. For his time and work and leaving me with some chlorine tablets. The cost was NO CHARGE!!!. I repeat NO CHARGE. If you ever need your AC unit installed, repaired or service CALL KONA AIR CONDITIONING . They are the BEST. This is the company to go to with your air conditioning repair needs! Our air conditioner had several boards "fried" by a geiko and the company that we called to repair it only found two bad boards. They said the compressor was also bad and said we'd have to wait up to 6 weeks to get a new one. A compressor cost over $1,000 plus labor. We were frustrated and called Kona Air Conditioning. What a great move that was! Mike came out fast, evaluated all boards, found another bad board, and said he believed the compressor was OK. He ordered replacement boards and returned in two days. Had the A/C working in no time. He even found several other problems related to the first company and fixed them as well. True to all of the other good reviews, I can attest to Mike's integrity, professionalism, and followthrough. I called for help with my whole-house dehumidifier during the busiest AC season. He had a new receptionist who, with good intentions, kept moving my appointment to try to get me into the schedule. After 3 weeks I was told that he couldn't come at all. I wrote to him through the website to express my disappointment and he called me back immediately, apologizing profusely as he did not know that had happened. He offered to come as soon as possible, which was first thing in the morning the next day, Saturday. To make up for the confusion he got my machine working again -- with thorough explanations and helpful advice about regular maintenance -- without charging me, which I thought was over and above. I was at my vacation house near Kona and my AC went out. I found a company on-line and they showed up the next day. They had to send a 2nd guy out because the first one didn't know what was wrong. The 2nd guy told me that I needed a new system and said his office would call me with a quote. I saw a Kona Air Conditioning truck in the neighborhood and asked him if he could look at my AC. Having a 30+ year old AC, I have met or talked to quite a few AC fellows. About a year ago, I met Mike who salvaged my unit quickly, inexpensively, and easily compared to others who seemed to find it impossible to figure out. Recently, it failed again. Mike came on time and at a time that worked for me. He evaluated it, diagnosed the leaks and so forth, and gave me three options and costs, depending on what my plans were for our condo. For the first time, I seriously considered replacement since Mike knows his stuff, which is apparent from his answers to our questions and concerns.
