The design is everything you'd want in an ocean-front Hawaii resort experience. The front nine winds through the lava landscape, complete with lava caves similar to those found along the Petroglyph trails. The back follows the ocean and beach. The holes are visually interesting and both challenge and reward different aspects of your game. The course was only part of the reason Kohanaiki was one of the most enjoyable golf experiences I have ever had. The service and the staff are first rate. There are elaborate "comfort stations" every 6 holes, replete with every refreshment and amenity you could desire. An exploration of each is required to discover the treasures they hold. Was a bit slow on the front 9 due to some bozos who couldn't hit the ball more than 10 feet in front while their overweight spouses sat in another cart filming and laughing. Once the staff came and told them to speed up it was great. Thank you guys for a great round.

One of the worst value courses on the island.

When I first came in, I had been recommended to the store by a friend as I was in search of a good set of clubs, and, as a lefty, it's pretty easy to come by cheap, not very good clubs, but the gems are few and far between, unless you want to shell out a lot of money for a new set. I did not. I was immediately greeted by Bud and he showed me to full sets that he had and let me know that I could mix and match if I preferred that. I found a couple of sets that I had an eye on and took lunch to mull over a decision. What I found from the putcures that I took of the clubs and doing a little research, is that I basically got a set of used, but well taken care of clubs that were 7-8 years old (not a whole matching set, so some variance) at about 20-25% of their original sale price! I know that there is plenty of new tech out there for experienced golfers, but Bud never tried to over-sell, or steer me in the wrong direction. In fact, when I've come back to either trade in, or fill a gap in my bag that was needed, either Bud or Larry has basically pulled a club out that made an immediate impact on my game! Great guys, trying to help out golfers in need of advice and direction is my experience. I also have had them re-grip a couple of clubs, and I must say, a very good deal if you want it done right and don't want to break the bank. Depending on the grip price, you can get a club for under $15! They'll also do the work if you have your own grips and want to just have them do the hard part. If you live on the Big Island and are either new to golf or in need of a change to a club in your bag, pay them a visit!

That's right, there are two ways to reach this beautiful white sand beach and gem by hiking, and the path I took was via the Kekaha Kai State Park's main parking lot, and first that is a rough 20-minute drive with 4x4 vehicles like Jeeps from Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway to that trailhead. Then it's about another 30-minute hike in each direction and you go on lots of loose lava rocks and it can get hot, so make sure you have sunscreen, a good bucket hat, and plenty of water. I don't know about the second way in, so I could not speak to that method. But in any case, it is so worth the time and effort when it was all said and done. There were a few crowds when getting to Makalawena Beach but not super busy at all. You'll find other tide pools, palm trees, and other native plants. Waves are rather rough at times, but it is still swimmable for the most part.

It's fun watching people ride the waves too. It's not the biggest area but so beautiful. There are a lot of people so it can get crowded. I had so much fun!
