TallGirl ordered my HBD cake from Kona Kakes. People were asking what I wanted for my birthday. I asked TallGirl to work all that out, but I told her I had that bit all figured out. I wanted to try Kona Kakes. The cake..It is amazing!!! She said ordering was easy, pick up was perfect and quick. The cake is moist, not too sweet, but dense. The density is reasonable and not too heavy. Tho this cake weighs like 10lbs! :) No messing around with the hapia pudding! The shop has a pick up counter and a display case. It was clean and cute. If you are looking for an Islander flavored cake you must check out Kona Cakes. The owner is from Hawaii and knows how to create cakes that are so good and moist. We ordered an Ube Cake for a birthday. The Ube cake was moist and the Ube Cream was not to sweet and everyone wanted another piece!! They have Guava, Lilikoi, Ube, Mac Nut and more!! They have small sample cakes you can buy to help decide which flavor to buy. Call ahead and order the sample cakes!!! I walked into Kona Kakes a little before they closed in hopes to try their mini cakes. Luckily I was able to purchase their mini Ube Cream Cake and mini Chocolate Macadamia Nut w/ Hazelnut Cream Cake. The Ube cake tasted just like Ube and the whipped cream frosting was very light and delicate. This was enjoyable to eat and not too sweet with a nice coconut shaving topping. The chocolate macadamia nut was more my favorite as someone who loves chocolate cake and more so loves macadamia nuts! The caramel drizzle on the whipped cream frosting was a nice touch as well to the overall flavor. I would most definitely come again to try move flavors and consider ordering a larger cake for a future special occasion! read more

I've ordered from this place three times now, with two of those being custom cake orders. The first two experiences were great -- they were responsive, easy to work with, and the decorations matched what I asked for. Unfortunately, my most recent order was a completely different experience. Communication was very poor this time around. It took multiple emails and about 10-15 phone calls just to get an invoice so I could pay for the cake. I was never able to reach anyone directly thereafter, which made the process frustrating. When I went to pick up the cake, I arrived about 40 minutes early and was met with a pretty rude response, being told to come back later. While I understand timing matters, the interaction could have been handled more professionally. The biggest disappointment was the cake itself. I was charged an extra $25 for a Mardi Gras theme, but the decoration looked like an afterthought -- random green strips and plain pink and gold sprinkles that didn't really match what you'd expect for that theme. It's disappointing because the flavors are genuinely good, and I had such positive experiences before. But based on this last order, I'm not sure I'll be returning. read more

The mini cakes are so unique and so good! Not sure if it was a whipped frosting but it was very light and fluffy! this place is a MUST try! I got 3 of the mini cakes for a friends birthday Guava strawberry was DELICIOUS!!!!!! Ube was SO good it even had little coconut shavings on the top. Lastly I got a Carmel macadamia one! ALL were 12 out of 10 lol everyone loved them. I will definitely be back especially for the guava one! read more

Janice is amazing and so creative! My coordinator recommended Kona Kakes after a less than ideal experience elsewhere, and I'm so glad that she did! Since I had never tried Hawaiian cake before and didn't have time for a tasting, I took a chance by ordering a UP-themed wedding cake. When I saw the cake, I was absolutely blown away by how beautiful it was. Janice delivered! And the taste? It was the best cake I have ever had in my life. Kona Kakes has been a staple in our household for birthday celebrations and for good reason! Our favorites are the Guava Cream, Piña Colada with rum, and POG. Their cakes are always delicious with just the right amount of sweetness, never too sugary, always perfectly balanced. Naturally, we chose Kona Kakes for our wedding cake as well. We ordered a small cake for our cake-cutting moment (and to save for later) along with a half-sheet cake for our guests. Both turned out absolutely fantastic, not only beautiful, but also incredibly tasty. Our guests couldn't stop raving about how good it was and many wanting seconds! Couldn't decide on what flavor of cake to order so I decided to purchase a variety of mini cakes they had on display. I was most excited to try the caramel macadamia nut as I keep hearing amazing reviews about it. It was moist, however I felt like it was way to sweet to enjoy. I have a sweet tooth so I was pretty surprised. Their salted caramel white chocolate and ube cakes were my favorite. Super moist and perfectly sweet without being too much. One thing I wasn't too happy about was that they are not very punctual with their store hours, specifically opening. I dont live close, so I had planned to go when it opened at 11. I arrived about 5 mins after opening and it was dark and doors were locked. I was confused and had to check my phone for the store hours. I waited about 15 mins after that and still no luck. I even tried calling the store, and nobody picked up. I ended up leaving and calling a couple of hours later and they said they were open that day but depending on who opens they might get there a little later than 11. Thats seems pretty unprofessional. I guess if you decide to come here maybe don't come at opening or make sure you place an order ahead of time if you do plan on going at opening time. Otherwise, good luck. read more

I heard about them from a big birthday bash where they had a huge Caramel macadamia nut cake. It was very good so I wanted to check them out myself. Back in the day, they also served Hawaiian food but that is no longer the case. My friend and I came here hoping to get the best of both sweet and savory but had to get our brunch on elsewhere. Afterwards we both came back to enjoy the lovely treats here though. Wow! We stumbled into this place because from the outside we could see MINI CAKES! As soon as we opened the door, we were greeted with an amazing Aloha and the entire shop had the heavenly scent of fresh baking cakes. There are several different types of mini cakes to choose from and different Hawaiian style variations. Macadamia and caramel. Guava cream. Queen Lili (butter cake with mango and a coconut whipped cream). They also do full sized cakes, wedding cakes and cream puffs! And I am pretty sure I saw an option to even order tortes. And I swear I saw an Ube pudding cake option for ordering. Plus -- they will customize the cake with edible graphics or design and also writing. It was the best stumble I have had in quite some time. We cannot wait to come back, and we are dying to splurge and go big for one of those full cakes. OMG And the service was top notch. I ordered a custom guava sheet cake for my husband's birthday and it got rave reviews from our guests!! The printed image came out beautifully. The cake itself was super moist, delicious and fluffy. Much taller than I expected so there was plenty leftover too! Husband was quite happy about that :) I did add my own sprinkles because the frosting decoration was minimal. Kona Kakes is a Hawaiian Cake Bakery. It's known for their Caramel Macadamia Nut Cake! This local business has been opened since 1995 and serves a variety of authentic Hawaiian cakes! Some of their cake options include the following Caramel Macadamia Nut with Hazelnut Cream Chocolate Caramel Mac Nut with Hazelnut Cream Guava Cream Marble Caramel Mac Nut with Hazelnut Cream and so much more! When my husband and I stopped into Kona Kakes on a Thursday afternoon, there were smaller cakes available! Some of those flavors were Ube Cream Cake, Pineapple with Macadamia Nuts, Guava Strawberry, Salted Caramel with White Chocolate. Some of the other flavors such as Chocolate Caramel Macadamia Nut were sold out for the day. We ended up splitting a Caramel Macadamia Nut. The ingredients included Butter cake, Kona Kakes Signature Caramel, and Hazelnut Cream. It was delicious! You could taste that it was freshly made and had such unique flavors! The combinations of the macadamia nuts and caramel was so good! The cake was light and fluffy. The cream wasn't too sweet! The mini-cakes and desserts are $7.99 each. The team member whom helped us at the register was awesome! She went through all of Kona Kakes offerings with us and even recommended which mini-cakes to try! Best cake I had in the US. for my birthday we looked far and wide in SD and Orange county to find an exotic fruit cake, passion fruit especially (my favorite). And with Kona Kake we really found the place where I will get cakes from now on. Very light sponge, flavorful mousses, really light and not overly sweet cream frosting. Custom white chocolate shaving cause this is how I roll... We tried their individual cake as tasters before ordering. The ube cake was original and awesome. The guava strawberry was tasty as well. I learned that they sell mini cakes of their most popular flavors at their store & I went immediately. I called first to see what flavors they have & unfortunately, you cannot reserve them, it is a first come first serve basis so make sure to come early! Their store is located in a shopping center. We've been loyal customers for many years now. We always order Kona Kakes to celebrate special occasions and milestones like birthdays, anniversaries and most recently, my retirement. We also stop in from time to time just to grab mini cakes to get our fix. The staff there are very nice and consistently provide great service and delicious cakes that everyone enjoys. Their cakes are always so moist and their frosting is so amazing! I usually never eat frosting on cakes but theirs is an exception. We've tried different flavors and have enjoyed them all. Last weekend was my husbands birthday. Even though we were going to dinner and I knew we would have dessert there, I wanted a little something to serve at home. I called ahead to make sure the store would be open that day and to see if I needed to order in advance. I had already decided that I would get a variety of mini cakes and was told that they always have some available when they open, but usually run out partway through the day. I arrived just after they opened Saturday (11AM). I was readily greeted at the front desk. It is a very small storefront and the staff was busy decorating cakes. I chose 3 mini cakes: pineapple coconut, caramel macadamia with hazelnut frosting, and chocolate macadamia with hazelnut frosting. They were all delcicious and both of the macadamia cakes were simply amazing! Something about having some texture from the macadamias really added to the cake. I also liked that the frosting wasn't too sweet. As long as you are not too hungry, one mini cake can probably serve two people. I would definitely order a whole cake from this place in the future. read more

The best place to get unique flavors in a cake. Great taste of the islands like haupia, macadamia nut, guava and passion fruit. Friendly staff and quick service. Mahalo to Kona Kakes for bringing the flavor of Hawaii with their delicious cakes that are so good they "broke da mouth." There aren't many bakeries in San Diego that bake cakes with these flavors: pineapple, coconut, guava, lilikoi, and their signature caramel macadamia. All of em taste great, and I like that they're not too sweet and the cream is light. These cakes definitely make the rounds at family parties and never disappoint. The boysenberry was the perfect separation for the waves of chocolate and the subtle crunch of the hazelnut toffee type of layer on the very top. The chocolate mousse was the exact mouth feel needed to separate the rich layers of chocolate cake. I saw, I conquered, and I was yet again impressed by what Extraordinary Desserts so purposefully and gracefully offered.
