That said, I've listened to KIOT plenty, especially at my favorite laundromat when I was in grad school. Unlike the sensationalized, over-the-top stations I grew up with (and 94 Rock here), KIOT's format is a great mix of obvious classics and plenty of deeper, longer tracks. You'll find some of the lesser-played Hendrix and Stones on this station, with fewer commercial breaks and DJs that generally keep it cool. Speaking of DJs, Erika Viking is the star of the morning show, and the day for that matter. She mixes up smart, hilarious content with personal commentary that seriously connects her with the audience, a rare trait for a host, and her guests are usually pretty entertaining, to boot. For a commercial station in ABQ, this is a solid choice.

My neighbor, a big Al Hurricane fan, makes this station her life soundtrack. If you enjoy hollering Volver, roll up your windows and turn up this station. All you really need to know: From 4am-noon, every weekday, they broadcast a good selection of NPR news and affiliated shows. After that, it's New Mexican all the way. Saturdays are the opposite, with NPR in the afternoon, and this station is a good Sunday option if you want something informative and fun, most of the day is interesting. So if you're down with Julión Álvarez Y Su Norteño Banda, tune in, and if you're looking for public programming, try tuning into the sister station on the other end of the dial, 107.5 FM.

Native American&Spanish music Car Talk- Yes, the Car Talk guys hail from Cambridge, Massachusetts, but this a fun automotive show! Thistle&Shamrock- Celtic music There's great variety, unlike most public radio stations nowadays. It's educational and fun!

Since I virtually never venture around the FM dial (oh, what a sad, sad audio scene we suffer in ABQ), I was more than a little curious about the station and I started listening. I immediately noted the following, which remain true one year later: 1) The song selection is determined by a corporate behemoth called American Public Media, they have no DJs, the music is simply pumped onto our airwaves via a local hub. On the massive negative side, it means listeners have absolutely no way to connect with and influence the content, and forget about requests. The ugly reality of modern radio. 2) On the plus side, it means absolutely no talk and very few commercials, compared to most stations. Virtually every time I tune in I'm getting music or a lame-o promo that says something like "Area 102.9, it's like if Yoda used the Force to Rock", whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. 3) Whoever chooses this music has awful taste in "modern" rock, they play the same crap that you'll find on other stations, alt-folk and electro-anthem-y stuff that drives me fucking insane (which I must suffer or face the wrath of my 16 year-old). They also have a weird fascination with the The Cure, The Police, the Red Hot Chili Peppers (a lame selection, where Kiedis raps about stupid shit), R.E.M., U2 and a smattering of 1980's Brit Pop. A third of the time, listenable. I'd say, overall, a two-to-three star station. And, unfortunately, one of the best in town.
