Oh my - just had dinner here last night and it was as good as it ever has been. Bumping my rating back up to 5 stars. The prime ribs and steaks ordered were scrumptious - just perfectly cooked and SO INTENSELY FLAVORFUL. We also tried the clam chowder for the first time here and loved it - just a great quality homemade soup and not your typical cream laden clam chowder. We brought our toddler along to celebrate my mom's bday and we were accommodated fully - we had a nice spacious corner of the restaurant and they even provided a bowl of applesauce and mashed potatoes for her. But she loved her bites of prime rib the most. Service was impeccable - quietly and timely, and our table was continuously bussed. The amaretto cheesecake was just as good as I remembered. We were all so happy about our meals - there was not a single thing or bite I would've changed. my mom was so proud of herself for picking this restaurant for her birthday, and so were all of us. read more

I went here for the first time for a work dinner earlier in the week. There were around 10 of us and I was very impressed by the speed and attentiveness of the service. For appetizers we ordered their special which was phyllo dough filled with seafood with a rich cream sauce which was probably my favorite thing I tasted all night! I opted for a house salad which I wasn't super impressed with but the Greek salads looked amazing so would definitely try that next time! For my main entree I went with the 8 Oz filet cooked medium and the twice baked potato. I also asked for a side of a side of their horseradish cream which was so yummy. I was a little sad they didnt pack up the horseradish with my leftover steak because it just wasnt the same at home without it! Not sure I would get the twice baked potato again as it was on the dry side, but my steak was cooked perfectly and I really enjoyed it. I was too full to try all of the desserts our table ordered, but did try one bite of the carrot cake which was very good. Absolutely 10/10 experience. From the food, to the service, to the atmosphere, Kreis is exceptional! Our server, Maz, was so incredibly passionate and energetic. Loved his humor and energy. We had the cheese and crackers and complimentary bread to start as well as some cocktails. The drinks were great and loved the bread and cheese/crackers as well. Tried the bacon wrapped scallops as an app and they were fantastic. For entrees, we tried the famous prime rib and steak medallions. The meat was so tender and flavorful, very fair portion. We reserved a table on a Sunday evening to take advantage of the Prime Rib special. I had been craving it and Kreis is the place to go. Upon arrival, we were greeted quickly at the host stand and would be seated right away. We were in the back dining area; I was glad as I might have had words with a woman who somehow thought we could enter the restaurant without opening the door. She took offense because the cold air came in with our entry. Rude guest aside, when seated, we were right on top of another table, that was the only downside. Our server was attentive and friendly. He took care of us, and kept up with our drinks, and made sure we were taken care of throughout the meal. Even being from St. Louis I don't love toasted ravioli but that was our appetizer, and I found then to be very good. The filling was plentiful and tasty, and they were cooked perfectly. The special comes with a Caesar or House salad, queen cut prime rib with Au Jus and horseradish, plus a choice of side and dessert. I went with a baked potato and chose warm apple strudel for the dessert. I forgot to snap a picture of the salad; it was a decent salad. When my prime rib dinner came out, I was shocked at the size! Of the prime rib and of the baked potato. The cut was rare, the jus was flavorful, but I am all about the horseradish sauce, so good! I had enough meat and potato for 2 more meals! Mike provided plenty of suggestions and offered to have my daughter's steak cooked more thoroughly when she ordered it wrong. My son and daughter both got steaks with potato pancakes and sliced potatoes. Both complimented on the flavor of the steak and side. My husband got the Sunday special (caesar salad, prime rib, twice baked potato and cheesecake). I got the caprese salad and salmon. Everything was delicious! I was in St.Louis to attend a family celebration for my wife's aunt who recently passed. My wife loves prime rib, so my brother in law made reservations here for the Sunday Prime Rib Special. The place is a very classy old fashioned venue. It had red walls, white table cloths, and lots of really nice paintings. The only thing I didn't like was the size of the tables. They were really tiny. My water glass, plate, bread plate, wine glass, and potato plate were wedged together like crazy. My brother in law brought his own bottle of wine for dinner. You still pay a substantial corking fee, but his wine selection from home is better than most restaurants. I only had one glass because I was nursing a cold and don't care to drink a lot of alcohol with cold medicine. I had the heirloom tomato and mozzarella salad. It was pretty much like a Caprese salad. The presentation with the combination of golden and red tomatoes was really nice. Those tomatoes tasted like my nicely ripened home grown tomatoes. I wasn't feeling a large slab of beef. I usually go for the chicken option whenever faced with a steak type of dining experience. Here, I opted for the crab cakes. They were the best I have had in decades. Very little filler and nicely seasoned. They had a delicate crispy crust that you felt more than tasted. The prices were about the same as an upscale steak house in San Antonio. We came to Kreis' for the first time to celebrate a milestone anniversary. My husband let them know ahead of time about our special occasion. I understand we aren't the only ones celebrating but we were sat in the table directly outside the kitchen in the back room right next to another large party with kids so our whole meal was very noisy. I ordered an old fashioned which wasn't great but I understand this isn't a cocktail restaurant. I would likely stick to wine next time. We enjoyed Caesar salads, baked potatoes, and I did have a great steak. The cheesecake with a firecracker was a fun touch for an anniversary. Went with high hopes and several friends tell me and my wife how great it was. We did the mushroom appetizer. The bigger mushrooms weren't cooked through and no flavor. Wife ordered the Spinach Salad that didn't come with blue cheese but my wife's had blue cheese. I told the waiter and they brought a salad back which contained items from the previous salad (warm goat cheese fritter which was now not warm and she found trace amouns of blue chees crumbles). I had Prime Rib but found it to be hard to cut and not very flavorful. Wife had the Filet Mignon and added the Garlic butter. She said it was good but not great and not worth the money. Kreis' Steakhouse is an institution in St. Louis, and for good reason. It dates back to the 40s and has signified great dining as long as I can remember. We were looking for somewhere to celebrate my In-laws' birthdays and found out they had never visited Kreis'--no brainer! We were seated in a great spot in the lower level--round table with plenty of room for five of us. Our server was remarkable! He could teach a class on how to provide outstanding service. We started with various salads and oysters Rockefeller. My Caesar was delicious and the oysters were great as well. For my entree, I enjoyed the Queen cut prime rib with the twice baked potato. Kreis' is the place to go for prime rib. There is no better. It was beautifully medium rare and melt in my mouth tender. I snuck a few bites of my husband's creamed spinach and it was amazing as well. And while I didn't have the odd couple, my college age son was still remarking the next morning as to how much he enjoyed it. Since we were celebrating birthdays, our server brought out cheesecake with sparklers. It was such a sweet, celebratory touch. My husband adores this place and has been so many times. He's been telling me about it since I met him so I was excited to try this staple of Missouri steakhouses according to him - and I was not disappointed one bit. Our server, Dale, was exceptional. The restaurant wasn't busy and we sat in the front bar area at a table to the left of the door. My husband loves their crackers and cheese so we had that as well as warm bread and butter. I chose their house salad with a special in-house dressing called "Mayfair" on top and extra tomatoes. Delicious and fresh. It's like a horseradish Ceasar dressing. My husband ordered the 16 oz strip, creamed spinach and German potato cakes served with sour cream and applesauce. These potato pancakes were seriously good! The steak was phenomenal and I usually only eat filet but it was sooo good. My husband asked for some horseradish sauce with the steak and it was excellent. Not too spicy and just enough flavor to blend perfectly with the steak. I ordered the bacon-wrapped scallops to eat as my entree and had a bit of my husband's steak. We had some fresh coffee brewed after and considered the carrot cake or chocolate cake but decided to pass. Dale brought us a super small piece of the chocolate cake to taste and it was excellent and moist and delicious. What a nice move. Entering the darker dining room you immediately get the vibe of an old-world restaurant, kinda New Yorkish in the 1950's. The waiters are professionals, not people working their way through college (or early in their careers), and it shows. Our selections tonight were the Queen cut of Prime Rib (in au jus), medium, and an 8oz Filet, Pittsburg style - rare. We prefaced them with a spinach salad and a house salad with Mayfair dressing. I watched a female bartender turn away a couple that asked about 2 "reserved" seats at the bar saying they were for the "owner's cousin" but then let some woman and her man she's apparently friends with sit down there 2 minutes later. Cousin didn't show up in the 25 minutes we were standing uncomfortably against the rail waiting. Server forgot to ring in our appetizer and it didn't come until right before our entrees after we had to ask him where it might be. My soup was barely warm which drives me insaaaaaane. $75 plates but send out not-hot soup, it boggles zee mind. Since the app was so late, we were still eating on it through dinner and I am not exaggerating because we started COUNTING at some point- we were asked no less than 5 separate times by server/runner/busser if they could take our appetizer away. The service was top notch and based on that alone I would recommend. From the phone calls prior to, to the pre meal assistance, to the service throughout the meal, it was excellent. The 'juice' with the filet was a tad salty for my taste but as I got through it I didn't notice it as much. The Caesar salad was fine. Nothing remarkable. The mashed had good flavor but as others noted wasn't hot. If you are looking for a nice place to enjoy prime rib or steak, definitely give it a try! I came here for a birthday dinner and had a great time. I made a reservation through Open Table in advance and it was busy so I'd recommend doing the same. Some patrons were eating at the bar which is always an option too. The lighting is somewhat dim, but every table has their own little lamp so you can see easily. We sat on the top floor but I heard there's basement seating as well. This was my first visit to Kreis's and I found the staff was very courteous and attentive. You should ask them about the origin story of the establishment! For dinner, we had the garlic shrimp appetizer (4 shrimp), house salad, caprese salad, ribeye with German potato pancakes and the special which was a peppercorn filet with a baked potato. All of it was delicious. Since we were there for a birthday, we also received a slice of their amaretto cheesecake. It was AMAZING. I would go back just to have the cheesecake again. So, so good. Perhaps they dialed back on the anchovies to keep this more appealing, but I think it lost some character. - queen cut prime rib (4.25/5): I realized I would have preferred a medium vs medium rare as I believe more of the fat would have rendered. Still, nice cut of beef and well executed. Cream sauce was tasty even though it had a very light amount of horseradish. - Tenderloin Medallions Vienna (4.25/5): very tender cut of tenderloin with rich sauce. Paired well with garlic mas - Double baked potatoes (3/5): the item I liked least. Under seasoned and needed to be punched up with some cheese, garlic, chives, bacon, etc. - key lime pie (4.5/5): May be best key lime pie in St. Louis. - chocolate Ganesh cake: (4/5) Surprisingly light. I thought it would be overindulgent, but was well balanced. - Carrot cake: (4.25/5) Unique take on carrot cake. Carrot cake with layers of a German chocolate-like spread with coconut and walnut (?). Dare say one of the best prime rib I've ever had. King's cut prime rib for me and pork chop for the wife. Aged for 48 hours, the roast is then patiently perfected at 125F for 18 hours. Edge to edge medium rare with a fantastic herb crusted rub. Top notch service to go along with the food. The atmosphere is old school steak house. Reminded me of every scene in the movies when the boss takes out the team to celebrate closing the big sale. Everything was clean and the staff were all dressed very professionally. The appetizers were good, our group shared a crab cake, fried mushrooms and toasted ravioli. All fine. The drink menu is pretty basic, not a lot of mixed drinks and the spirits were all fairly standard. I had hoped for a unique bourbon or two, but no luck. The star of the dinner was the main dishes. Everyone said that the steaks were all delicious, and the lobster was great! The salads were all good as well, although the blue cheese dressing was a bit odd. The side dishes were the low point of the meals. The twice baked potatoes were sad looking, with no seasoning and room temperature.
