Just down the street from Beethoven Haus is Namen-Jesu-Kirche, which was constructed between 1686…read moreand 1717 for the Jesuit community. After the Jesuits were expelled in 1774 by the 1773 order of the Holy See, the building stood empty. During the French occupation, all church property was seized and this property has remained in state hands ever since. I was wondering why Beethoven served at St. Remigius as a secondary organist at 12yo before he was promoted to primary organist at 13yo when this church was located so close to his home, but it makes sense now that we know it was not used for liturgical services during the time he was in Bonn. It also helped that his organ teacher was the primary organist before him at St. Remigius. From 1876-1934, it served as the parish church for the Old Catholic community of Bonn. It suffered heavy damage during WWII, but its exterior reconstruction was completed in 1954 while its internal reconstruction was completed 3 years later in 1957. It was used as the Roman Catholic university church, where Joseph Ratzinger, then Professor of Theology at the University of Bonn, preached in the early 1960s, before he was Pope Benedict XVI 2005-2013. After the Archdiocese of Cologne relinquished its use in 2009, Namen-Jesu-Kirche has served the German Diocese of the Old Catholics as its diocesan and cathedral church since 2012. The 8 confessionals is in the sanctuary are uncovered. The Old Catholic Church does not require confessionals, so they are used as listening or reading spaces. Good area and easy to find. The colour and designs are amazing from the ancient times and the fact that it's still standing in good condition is awesome.

Once again, this place is much smaller than its cousin in Cologne, but then again that is not…read moresurprising since the one in Cologne is suppose to be the biggest in Germany (or something like that). However, it still is pretty impressive, as far as cathedrals go, though since it is a lot smaller it takes a lot less time to wander around and take the building in. Unfortunately, due to its much smaller size you are probably not going to be as over awed as you would have if you had previously visited the one in Cologne. Still, its free, so if you do like church architecture and religious art, it is certainly worth visiting.
