Great sushi, very mediocre everything else. Sushi rolls and nigiri are among the best I've had in Berlin -- the chefs are definitely trained professionals and using the right ingredients. All of the rolls I've tried have been well balanced with wasabi and other flavors, and the house creations are interesting without being drowned in mayonaise-based sauces. Prices are higher than most other Japanese restaurants in Berlin and unfortunately much more expensive for similar quality/quantity rolls in the US. The menu's other offerings were very disappointing -- ramen soup broths were bland and the tempura batter lacked crispiness and seasoning... just a mushroom wrapped in cold, soggy dough. In a blind taste test, I probably wouldn't have been able to distinguish the house gyoza or spring rolls from their frozen-food aisle counterparts. I would return just for the sushi, but would look elsewhere for a full dinner experience. read more

Ok, so let me correct my earlier review. I was a little harsh. This restaurant doesn't really deserve the two stars I gave it before, That was a mistake. What I meant to give them was ONE STAR!! And believe me that is a stretch for a sushi restaurant that is supposed to be "The Shit" here in Berlin. Terrible service!! Grumpy staff, from the waiters to the sushi chefs who look miserable behind the bar. Seriously, go get a job your good at and actually enjoy. And the sushi, well, I'd rather get it from a grocery store take away. At least then I'd know what I was getting was actually somewhat fresh and at least appealingly to look at. I ordered about half of what I would get at a really good sushi restaurant and it ended up being over 50 Euro!! What a total joke!! Locally renown as the best Sushi in Berlin, Kuchi never disappoints. Super fresh Sushi is prepared in the open kitchen towards the center of the minimalist restaurant which provides lone dinners, as well as groups with some interest as the chef's create their edible artwork. I always like to come here, when I am around, because of the "My Best Friends Rolls", the green Tea (which comes with lime and apple juice) and the quiet atmosphere. I dont like to experiement too much with modern sushi creations, and I really hate anything with cream-cheese or the completely fried rolls that they offer in the US. Kuchi has a fine selection of interesting combinations and I mostly take one new type combined with my alltime favorite. I also liked the teriyaki-chicken on rice and the miso-soup. I have not tried the other dishes. From what I can tell the sushi-quality is top notch and everything smells and tastes fresh. Staff is always attentive and friendly but not pushy, which is nice (although I miss some of the extra-friendly girls that worked there a few years ago). I think the pricing is fair. I am okay with 20-30€ for good food and a drink. Unless there are large groups of families or lady-nights around, it is a great place to catch up with friends, since the acoustic panels work great and together with the calming music you can actually have a conversation without overhearing everyone else. (unless someone sits right next to you on the bench of course) I also like the take-out counter next door, so that people dont have to wait and stand in the restaurant. read more

This is a trendy Asian restaurant on the west side of Berlin. My friend was adamant that we go there, despite their being other choices within a one block radius. They mostly focus on Japanese cuisine, but there is a little bit of other Asian influences on the menu. The place is decorated very well and was definitely packed on a Friday night; reservations are helpful. The food, however, is a bit average and on the over-priced side. I am too used to good Asian food in San Francisco and San Diego to put up with food that doesn't impress me. I enjoyed some of the rolls I tried, but they could have been better. The service was nice and consistent. They also need to add some more sake options to the menu if they are going to claim Japanese. I would have also been happy if I could have ordered an uni nigiri. read more

Sushi and Berlin, in my mind, don't exactly go quite as nicely as peanut butter and jelly. In other words, the two don't exactly go hand in hand. Boy, I couldn't have been more wrong. Kuchi is a little gem on Kanstrasse. We arrived prior the dinner rush, and were quickly escorted to our seats. The lighting in the restaurant was rather subdued, which I found created such a pleasantly calm atmosphere. Insider's tip? This would be a great date spot. The waiters and waitresses were just the right amount of attentive. And now onto bigger and better things--the sushi. Coming from a Los Angeles native, I really do have to say that the sushi was absolutely on point for the price. We ordered the sushi platter for 3, and let's just say that they were far more generous than I had expected. The portion was enough for two relatively hungry guys, and one slightly peckish girl. The sashimi was great quality, and most importantly, fresh, and the rolls were very flavorful and nicely wrapped. The only roll I couldn't have cared less for was the cucumber roll--but then again, who ever likes the cucumber roll...The presentation was great, and to be totally honest, I'm not quite sure if it was the company or the food, but the dining experience overall was absolutely solid. I only wish that I remembered what rolls exactly came with our platter, or how much exactly we each had to fork up, but I guess that's indication of a great dining experience, is it not? When you willingly open up your wallet post meal and dump anything and everything you have onto the bill, you know that the food was good. For the sake of a more comprehensive review, I'll head back and give the platter a second go...definitely don't mind if I do, and neither will you! I searched for best ramen in Berlin and Google showed me here. Turned out they didn't have ramen but only sushi, some other Japanese foods and few Thai and Vietnamese dishes (quite confused!). The place was small and crowded. We ordered a sushi menu for 2. I found the sauce they put on one sushi role was too sweet and messed with other type of sushi. The sashimi cut was short and thick.
