The Plough & Harrow is a very old pub situated on an old Roman and London Road. It used to be an…read moreold coaching inn, and still has the old fabulous stables, redone and adding a touch of history to the place. A few years ago it was partially ruined in a flood, but the rebuild has gone a long way to making it one of the best pubs in Tamworth. It has a very large garden, lots of tables, a canopy and outside braziers for nice but chilly spring evenings. The inside has low ceilings, exposed beams and magnolia walls. It's a nice, comfy old English pub feel, but without the tatty standard maroon carpet. There aren't many tables inside, so standing is pretty much a must. The Plough & Harrow gets really busy on weekend nights, and is a haven to the young and trendy Tamworth set (you didn't know they existed, did you?) before they go on to a club. The music is pretty decent, through speakers, and so loud on weekends that talking inside isn't very plausible. The P&H also have a very nice restaurant attached, which I haven't been to, but have heard very positive reviews about -- it's mainly Italianish food with a modern twist. The pub grub here is very good, with some different things (Cajun Chicken Sandwich, YUM), and with excellent chips. I can't rave enough about these chips, which are nearly potato wedges, nicely cooked with delicious seasoning. The main bartender/manager is a really friendly guy, and all the staff are pretty chatty and nice. They often have fun activities, both for adults in the evening and families at the weekends, like an American 4th of July party (yay!), and festivals. They provide accomodation, which some of my friends from the US took advantage of when they came over for my wedding. The rooms are all refurbished and nicely laid out, with comfy beds and decent WCs. Nothing astonishing, exccept when you consider the SUPER CHEAP price. The rooms are all a bit off from the pub, so the noise level also isn't too bad.

We're glad we bothered to go a little bit off the motorway, as it was a lovely place to stop. The food was excellent- a wide variety of pub favourites and more unusual stuff at reasonable prices. The atmosphere was friendly and fairly warm, it was all beautifully clean and quite cosy inside, and it was easily worth spending the 10 minutes driving that it took to get away from Tamworth motorway services. I had a m/r ribeye which was cooked to my liking. staff where courteous and checked in just the right number of times over the meal. there was a little banter on paying which was welcomed. Had a…read moreBooking/Reservation for a Birthday party/dinner, only to be told on arrival they have NO booking and asked to see my reservation confirmation. Having produced my reservation, I was then told "Sorry but we can't accommodate you". After I said I wasn't happy and we had driven from Nottingham to meet friends, we was offered a complimentary drink if we was prepared to sit at the bar for at least an hour and a half, and they should be able to seat us then! I reported to customer services and their response was equally empathetic and more concerned about how they have past my feedback on. Total waist of time.

Besides the obvious stone baked pizzas and freshly prepared pasta dishes there is an array of seafood to rival any City restaurant. Prices were reasonable too. Isettled on spaghetti Marinara and my friend decided on a smoked ham pizza. We also shared a huge stone baked thin crust garlic bread as a starter. Everything we ate was delicious and the portions were hearty,. The waitress was like a breath of fresh air, vivacious and helpful in suggesting wine choices. She also ensured she was attentive without us feeling the slightest bit rushed. It was a Saturday night and we were lucky to get the last table, yet it did not feel cramped or noisy. It was cosy and intimate and would be a lovely choice actually for a first date. We were celebrating my friends engagement and it was ideal as they gave us plenty of time to chat. They also did not bat an eyelid when we both burst in to tears as she asked me to be her 'chief bridesmaid'. They do a three course set menu every night except sat for £11.95 which I want to sample so I think I may be dragging my husband back.

Its obvious that they have spent a lot of money on this place. Its really, really nice. Everything is beautifully designed, tasteful and clean. There is a beautiful outdoor seating area - and as you can imagine, its manicured to perfection - you will struggle to find a lovelier place to have breakfast on a summers day. The breakfast was excellent - except that my poached egg was hard - a horrific sin in my book! The breakfast had bacon, an exceptionally juicy, tasty sausage, tomato, lovely toast, black pudding, beans, (I always order mine to be separate), and mushrooms. With the exception of the egg, it was an exceptional breakfast. I would have given this restaurant a 5 star rating, but I had issues when I ate dinner here. I ordered ribs and asked for the slaw to be served separately. It wasnt. I sent it back and got the same plate back, with the salad and slaw scraped off it. Well most of it was. I complained but was told that I would be contacted. I never was. That's really bad customer service as far as I am concerned. It lost them a star. Shame.

There are three choices on draught beer, including Boddington's, Stella and Carling, and several bottles of beer. The wine is expensive (as is the rest of the menu), but interesting, with few of the boring offerings of other restaurants. The menu is dependable, if pricey for what you get, and a lot of the food is actually fairly authentic American-Italian. The Tamworth branch is really cosy and cute, and the design is great for intimate meals. Unfortunately, F & B's is mainly a family restaurant, and there realy isn't enough room for the typical children's party. I wouldn't recommend this for a couple looking for a nice quiet meal, but it's great for families or friends. The service at this branch is fine -- nothing flashy, but everything on time. Unlike the Lichfield branch, the food is always well-cooked and arrives on time. My favourite is the Chicken Parmigiana and the Pesto Chicken pasta. The pizzas are also very dependable and nice. Parking here is hard, as the car park is shared with the next-door Odeon Cinema, and spaces are VERY limited. I would imagine they lose a lot of business with people simply unable to park, and no nearby car parks. So take a taxi or go at an unusual time to avoid disappointment. Also, booking ahead for dinner on the weekend is essential -- this is a smallish restaurant that is very popular. All in all, you could do worse than Frankie & Benny's, for a family meal. Definitely nicer places to go for couples.
