Auntie is super cute and friendly and I really want to support this place but I thought it was just okay. Maybe this place is more for the south east asian dessert than the savory meal? Got the Salted Egg Fried Chicken set ($10) and ate at the park nearby. It was premade so the food was lukewarm, which does quite a damage on quality to fried food. The salted egg flavor also was quite bland. The chicken also has quite a lot of fat park and soft bones..... Not the best parts. She was very friendly and explained everything she had that day. I got the Kuih Set of the week, which consists of 7 pieces (varies depending on the box) Everything is made fresh daily and meant to consume the same day. If you refrigerate it, you will change the texture of the dessert. : 3 x Talam Pandan (steamed rice flour, sugar, coconut milk, & pandan leaf juice) - Beautiful layers of white and vibrant green jello-like square dessert. The owner told me the coconut is a bit salty, which provides a great contrast to the pandan layer of the dessert. If you never tried pandan before, it is like a grassy vanilla with notes of coconut. It tastes better than it sounds. 4 x Kosui Gula Melaka (steamed rice flour, palm sugar, coconut milk & grated coconut) - This one was very reminiscent of the nian gao we eat around Chinese New Year, except this was bursting with coconut flavor. I came across Kuih Cafe because of Yelp's AAPI celebration month event, and was greeted with the sweetest lady! After following them on IG, I noticed that their menu for this weekend included durian cheesecake, caramel kaya cake, and curry rice noodles. All of which I HAD TO HAVE! Luckily, I got there in time with no line, and ordered the aforementioned dishes ASAP. I brought them home and, WOW, the durian cheesecake is the best I'll EVER have! It's rich and creamy and had the perfect amount of durian in it! Usually, restaurants skimp on their flavorings, but not here. In fact, I'm actually thinking of asking for a special durian cheesecake made for an upcoming birthday Please check them out and support them if you can! A lovely, one-of-a-kind Malaysian cafe in NYC! I've been here several times now, but finally dropping a 5-star review because of how accommodating they were with my cake order! They update their rotating menu weekly on their Instagram page, and about 3 days before my mom's birthday, they posted that they'd be selling their Ube-Taro Layer Cake this weekend. Immediately, I DM'ed them asking for a quote, etc. They were very responsive and informed me that usually I'd have to preorder 1 week in advance (I guess for other cake flavors), but since the Ube-Taro was on the menu this weekend and they were already preparing it, they'd make the exception for me - thanks again!! I paid the $30 deposit through Venmo (@kuihcafe) and then another $30 upon pickup. The lady was so warm and kind. The Ube-Taro Layer Cake itself was delish! Like all Asian cakes, it is not overly sweet and I just loved the flavor of ube-taro kaya/custard jam. The yellow cake was a bit heavier than expected (not as light and airy as the traditional Chinese bakery cakes) but tastes so homemade after heating a slice up in the microwave. It smelled like it just came out of the oven. I've tried a slice of the Pandan Layer Cake ($7) a few months back, and remember loving that one as well. In the past, I've had the white coffee ($2.50), Salty Egg Butter Chicken over rice ($10), a kuih set ($10)... All were great and I cannot recommend this cafe enough! I'm not a huge dessert person but this has easily become one of my favorite dessert spots, as they offer such uniquely traditional Malay/Chinese foods. I'm not sure if this is my first time having authentic Malaysian kuih, but these are ridiculously good. I'm a huge dessert person, but I usually find myself eating cake, so these bite sized dessert bites, so different from cakes/ice cream/souffle pancakes really wowed me. They change their kuih sets every week (check their IG for the menu), so my impression is only from this set. But if this set the standard, then I'm hooked and willing to come back every week for something new. In general, the kuihs are really chewy, a bit sticky, and not too sweet at all. So much coconut flavor and chew! Don't refrigerate or the texture will be ruined. It's $10 for 7 pieces. Abok Sago: steamed sago coconut milk, palm sugar and pandan leaf juice. This is super coconutty and a bit stickier than the other one. Loved the palm sugar that yes, made it a little bit more sweet, but also seemed to have a coffee like taste. Not sure if I'm describing it correctly, but the balance of flavors really nailed it for me. Pulut Tai Tai: for non-Asians with a sweeter palate, this steamed blue pea flower glutinous rice might be considered "bland" but for me, it's perfect. Not too sweet, but very fragrant and you can taste how simple this is. The sweetness really comes from the pandan jam at the top, which is so damn good that I need to buy a jar of that by itself. Durian Basque Cheesecake ($10): ok ok it's a tiny slice for the price point and my wallet is screaming but you've gotta understand that durian is expensive, and durian desserts even more expensive. The durian taste is stronggg so it's not for the weak-hearted haha. While it's still soft and melty in the middle, I wished it was a bit more gooey, especially towards the edges where it was way too hard for a basque cheesecake. Small store on Eldridge that's easy to miss. We got the pandan chiffon cake and the kuih set, which was seri muka (2-layered) and kosui gula mekala (palm sugar) for that week. None of the items we got were super sweet, which suited my preference, but the flavors could be a bit more prominent. The seri muka had super interesting flavor and texture profiles as the blue sticky rice on the bottom was a tad salty. This was also my first time trying Malaysian desserts so I didn't know what to expect and can't speak to its authenticity, but overall I'm glad I gave it a try as it was a very interesting and pleasant experience! Thankful I found this shop. My sister and I have traveled to malaysia before and the foods sold here were truly authentic and delicious! They only open friday, saturday and sunday. You have to find them on social media and msg them to place an order as they make their items fresh and by demand. They have different weekly menus. We ordered the following: 1) coconut chendol sundae, 2) pulut pangang, 3) pineapple tart cookies, 4) Set C (kuih talam pandan & kuih ubi kayu/cassava). All of the items were so delicious! The ones that surpassed our expectations were the coconut chendol sundae, pulut pangang and pineapple tart cookies. We loved it so much, we went back to purchase more pulut pangang and pineapple tart cookies. They have one table with 2 chairs outside the shop if u want to eat quickly. The staff, likely the owner, was friendly and suggested dining in for the best Apam Balik experience. Priced at $12 and made fresh to order, it was sweet with brown sugar and peanuts, a nice combination. However, the pandan-flavored cream was disappointing--too watery and sloppy. I couldn't stop dreaming of their desserts after seeing them all over Instagram. My birthday was coming up so I decided to try one of their cakes with my family. We usually get cakes from Tous le Jour but I was frustrated that I wasn't able to preorder one and would just have to walk into the store and buy what they had that day. Kuih cafe requires that you order your cake 7 days in advance and Venmo the payment to confirm the order. Their largest size is 8" which was enough to feed my family of 11 people. I chose between their pandan, rose, and ube/taro flavors. The rose is so beautiful looking but it happens to be gluten free so I chose the ube taro. The cake was $60. I was on my way there to pick it up after work and got stuck on the train due to an incident. The store workers were so nice and let me stop by after hours to pick it up. I met the store owner and she was so sweet. She gave me an extra bag for the cake, a birthday sign and some candles after I mentioned it was my birthday. The cake itself was simple yet aesthically pleasing. However, my family did point out that one side of the cake was not completely frosted. We still tried it with an open mind. I really enjoyed the light, fluffy texture of the cake. The sponge was so light and airy! The frosting in between the layers and on the outside was this jelly like, creme consistency. The flavor was predominantly taro but even so, the cake was very enjoyable. It had just the right amount of sweetness, and would be a great dessert for health conscious people. I do wish the ube flavor was present but the flavor of real ube is tough to showcase. Overall, I thought it was a great dessert to try but the flavors were a little too muted for me. A great cake, but not tantalizing enough for me to crave it. I'll be back another time to try their other items! They were good, but I've specifically visited this place for their kuih, and other new Malaysian desserts that I haven't tried before. ETA: Checked FB&Instagram based on owner's response and while mooncakes are advertised, it's not apparent that mooncakes are the only desserts being served that weekend, especially to an out-of-town visitor. Kuih Cafe has been a lifesaver for my southeast Asian kueh cravings. I haven't found anywhere else that serves these kuehs that have been as consistent in quality and wide in variety as this place. My only beef with this place is that they're only open from Friday through Sunday, from 12pm - 6pm. And the menu changes each week, so if you missed ang ku kueh, you're shit out of luck for a month or so. You can find their updated menu for the coming weekend every Tuesday on their Instagram @kuihcafe. I've had their kueh sets (usually a box of 6-8 pieces of two types sheetpan-style kuehs), the ang ku kueh, and the pandan cake. Everything has been pretty solid. I've been meaning to check out this unique place! Not many (if any) places have kuih - a southeastern dessert that's lesser known and therefore really hard to find! The only other place I know that has kuih is Lady Wong! The restaurant itself is a hidden gem - kinda off the beaten path on a quiet street. Bit far away from the Chinatown streets where most places are concentrated on. You have to walk a bit. All the hike was worth it though! Their menu and items seem to change frequently. Kudos to that! I tried their kuih set to get a sample of different items. The Angku's are presented on banana leaves which brings back childhood memories! The leaves are genius idea that both prevents the desserts from sticking to the surface and also the fragrance of the leaves adds so much more sensual impacts to the cakes! The texture of the cakes are very chewy and reminds me of rice cakes! The fillings is a tad too sweet. The Ubi Kayu-Sago is a new experience for me - it's steamed sago with gula Melaka (palm sugar) layered over cassava, sprinkled with grated coconut. The plam sugar layer is gelatinous and the cassava is more solid (also chewy but more cake-y and less sticky compared to the Angku). The grated coconut adds yet another element of flavor and texture. Ordered a lemon chiffon cake and it was a hit. My family enjoyed how light and airy it was (not overly sweet). The only thing that can be improved is if there is a sign posted outside for pick up custom orders. I called to confirm the cake (had emailed and contacted via IG) but knew they were busy and they told me to get the cake at 1 pm. I arrived at 1 pm and this jerk customer in the front of line would not let me step in to inquire about the cake reservation (not trying to skip the line!) when the owner told me to come specifically at that time. Rude a** customer. Besides that, everything was lovely. Another time i placed and order for a sesame chiffon cake- it was light and airy and the black sesame flavor was prominent - you could smell it as soon as you opened the box. We all loved this cake. I love this place and make the trek from BK regularly. The main draw for me is the kuih, which is absolutely delicious. The mini burnt cheesecakes are also delicious, although some of the flavors are just a small 1/2 teaspoon of filling inside a plain cheesecake. Also the iced coffee is so good. If you're in the Chinatown area and want to try something different, Kuih Cafe offers a variety of Malaysian snacks and treats with flavors that you may or may not be familiar with! I went there on a late Sunday afternoon during the Lunar New Year, so fortunately I was able to get some special treats before they closed for the weekend. I was able to get some Festivity Cookie Balls, which were pineapple tart cookies along with some classic Nasi Lemak. Though a bit pricey for their size, the cookies were really good, as the outer cookie shell was buttery, crumbly, and melts in your mouth while the inner filling of pineapple was sweet and slightly tart. The combination was irresistible and you might end up asking for more if you devour them quickly. As for the Nasi Lemak, it was savory, a bit spicy, and full of umami. If you're fan of mouthfeel when eating, you're going to get plenty of that as you get a bit of crunch due to the peanuts and cucumbers along with a bit of crisp with the anchovies. All of these different ingredients together blend perfectly together for the perfect snack as the more I ate, the faster I devoured the Nasi Lemak. I would definitely get it again if I want a quick bite. If you're worried about spice, I would say the Nasi Lemak isn't spicy enough where you need a swig of milk, so don't get intimidated by the Sambal chili listed in the ingredients! Anyways, there are even more snacks you can get at Kuih Cafe. Though Lunar New Year is over, they still offer a variety of snacks and cakes. Next time, I'm going to opt for more sweets as they have cakes made with Asian flavors like pandan and black sesame along with their signature kuih, a Southeast Asian dessert, which is also the cafe's namesake! One thing that you should make sure of during your visit to Chinatown is to come on a weekend! Kuih Cafe is only open Friday to Sunday during the afternoon hours, so plan accordingly. When I was preparing to leave Malaysia after living there for a short while, the one thing I was sad about was not being able to find the same extensive variety of kuih back in the States. That's why I was so excited when Kuih Cafe opened up. It offers the widest range of kuih that matches what I had almost weekly when I lived in Malaysia. I appreciate the idea of a rotating menu (I follow the Instagram to keep up with the weekly specials), which ensures you have the widest sampling of desserts and savory foods. When I went, Kuih Cafe had this excellent summer cendol (another favorite that is not easy to find in the States) with coconut ice cream. So, my appreciation for this place is both because of the quality of the food & the nostalgia it brings for me. Anything you order, you get a strong sense of how much care and dedication the owner puts into making the food. The kuih offered can be anything from colorful glutinous rice cakes to coconut flakes fried in curry powder then wrapped in a grilled banana leaf. The nasi lemak (its THE Malaysian staple dish: coconut rice + fried anchovies + fried peanuts + hard boiled egg + chili paste) is pretty authentic, considering I grew up eating Nasi Lemak in Malaysia. I like the kuih (glutinous rice cake dessert made from coconut milk, sweet potato etc ) as well as it is not too sweet and it reminded me of home. Kuih Cafe opened shortly before the pandemic started, so the owner has been working largely by herself to run this little shop to sell Malaysian kuih here. We first visited as part of the Send Chinatown Love food crawl a while back and have come back every other time we make the trip to Chinatown, because we love the food and we want to support this new and great business. Every time we've come, we get the nasi lemak + kuih set for $10. Nasi lemak is the unofficial national dish of Malaysia and it's not hard to see why: rice with a hint of coconut, crispy salty fried anchovies, savory and spicy sambal sauce, a hard boiled egg, and fried peanuts come together for honestly some of the most perfect flavor and texture combinations you can eat. And then when you've gobbled that up, there's 2 pieces of lightly sweet rice dessert to enjoy! They have many different kinds of kuih and I've liked every single type that has been included with our set. I can't wait to be able to try their full menu one day, but in the meantime, I'm glad Kuih Cafe was how I could introduce my partner to nasi lemak and introduce kuih to both of us. This review is only for their desserts. The durian cheesecake ($10) is to die for. I crave it all the time. They change their menu every week but it looks like the durian cheesecake is the one exception they keep around (probably because it's the best). It's not super heavy on the durian taste, it's just right. I've had the other cake a couple times and it's usually super light and not too sweet ($7). The daily kuih set is also pretty good but it depends on the flavor. I usually microwave them for 10 - 15 seconds if I'm eating a day or two later. Went a few months back and I almost got everything available for that day - the pandan layer cake, ondeh cookies, kuih set, the steamed pea flower rice rolled wrapped in banana leaves and nasi rendang. The good - the woman (specifically the woman) seemed friendly, genuine and the desserts, I have to say, were good. The bad - Desserts were good, food was not. I don't know if it was an off day but the nasi rendang meat was dry, there wasn't enough sauce, and the rice was mushy. I didn't find the rice rolls to be too tasty. Sounds exciting and tasty but was quite the opposite. Not as bad as the rendang though. The worst - the man. There was an older gentleman there who serviced us who lost me as a customer. He was polite but was, for lack of a better term, a cheap-o. As he was packing up my items, the woman asked him in Cantonese if she should get some utensils to pack for us. The man probably assumed I didn't speak Chinese since we conversed in English and he responded to her "no need." Even though we ordered a curry rice dish and some glutinous rice rolls. I think my husband and I could've said something at the moment but we weren't really thinking about it. But then a few things just piled up that can't and shouldn't be excused: - after leaving the store, my husband said he wanted to eat the rendang before it got cold so I turned back to ask for utensils. While the man was again very polite, he came back with one fork - which he accidentally dropped on the counter in front of my face - but then proceeded to pick back up to give to me. So after my husband and I came in to order together- TWO people - just TWO mins ago, 99% of the menu-he handed me ONE fork- and he couldn't even have the courtesy to give me a clean one. Also calling out that it was the flimsiest of plastic take out forks so it wasn't exactly the high quality utensils that you may want to limit your customers from taking excessively. - when we opened the bag, there were no napkins. I really can't imagine getting delivery or take out from a place where they don't give you anything except the food. Thinking back on it, I'm surprised he even gave us a bag to hold our order lol He missed out -could've had an opportunity on to save on that as well! - the pandan cake - while good, the slice was really tiny. I didn't realize it at the time because I was busy thinking about all the other items to get, but my husband later mentioned that he saw the man look around and actively select what was noticeably the smallest slice. This was before the fork and napkin cheapness so again, he didn't think too much of it - lastly, some of the items the kuih set were over salted so I had to throw it out - and that set wasn't cheap either. I saw on IG the next day that it was a mistake and they would offer half off for the next set you purchase. i think it was $10 a box for like 6 little pieces, so guess it was appropriate At that point, everything left such a bad taste in my mouth - half figuratively, half literally - that I already knew I wasn't going back. I've always either been in the area too early, or too late, and never made it to kuih cafe, but I've kept a close eye on their weekly IG posts and have been meaning to go here for awhile now. Well, yesterday I had the day off from work and made a beeline there to FINALLY purchase some kuih! The owner was lovely, asking how I found out about their business, and commenting about how so many Singaporeans live in NYC, after I said I grew up there and that my parents still reside in Malaysia. Since it was my first time there, I ordered about 80% of the menu for the week. The kuih set, was just spectacular. It was so fresh, the flavors perfectly balanced and I felt as if I had been transported back home. She reminded me that kuih was best eaten the day purchased, and please, do not put it in the fridge (ever). I assured her that it would be consumed that day and.....let's just say that wasn't a hard thing to accomplish, later that afternoon. The pineapple tarts were ok, as I tend to like my pineapple filling to be on the super sweet side, and it's the one Asian baked good that I can actually bake myself. Now, let's just take a second to talk about the cake. Specifically the caramel kaya cake. The pandan cake layers are super, duper, light, fluffy, airy and just the perfect amount of pandan flavoring. And who doesn't love kaya? The caramel kaya was EQUALLY amazing. What saddens me most is that I only purchased a single slice. In the future, I plan on ordering this as a full cake, for a birthday celebration. True baking perfection. As a self proclaimed lover of all things durian, I had to get a slice of the durian cheesecake. Something tells me I will wish there was a second slice in the fridge waiting for me, when I sample it later. I cannot wait to return and sample more of their savory non-desserts (too). read more

My Malaysian friend and I stopped by here quickly to try some Malaysian sweets. It was pretty good. I can't remember the names of the dishes (maybe I never knew) but my friend said it was authentic and that's good enough for me. read more

Finally, I managed to try this little gem of Malaysian cuisine in Chinatown-LES. Perfect name for what it offers. Great selection of Malaysian delicacies home made style kuih's (desserts/cakes/cookies) but that's not all. Today, I had the Nasi Lemak with a curry chicken drumstick, deliciously authentic. It's so important to ensure the coconut rice is fragrantly cooked and the owners have done a fabulous job with their Nasi Lemak. I love their minimalist menu with only true Malaysian food and updated on a weekly basis, so follow their Instagram to know what's on their menu each week. Kuih Cafe opened just before COVID hit NYC last March and I am pleased for the owners to hang in and keep going into 2021, congrats to V & B. I will sure be back for more despite an approx. 45 minutes MTA ride, eager to know "what's cooking" from your weekly Tuesday Instagram update!! read more
