OMG! The honey dipped fried chicken is the bomb! The chicken was exceptionally juicy. There was no flour aftertaste, and the honey added the perfect sweetness. I also loved that the entire skin was crunchy/crispy. The lunch came with the typical local scoop rice and their version of potato salad. Potato salad not a big fan. It was a bit like mashed potatoes with chunks and mayo. I think the recipe needs some tweaking. The location is in Kula, outside the view from the parking lot is spectacular! Possibly one of our best meals on Maui, and a very rewarding dinner following a long day of driving all around the island to Hana, Waimoku Falls and back around from the south through Kula Upcountry. There was a 30 minute wait by the time we got there around 6 pm on a Saturday night. (Was told they don't take reservations for parties less than 8.) However, just make sure to get your name on the wait list as soon as possible, then head across the street to the market and liquor store to pick out a great wine to go with dinner. The restaurant is BYOB with no corkage! We started with the Lobster and Shrimp Mac and Cheese which was really good with lots of fresh plump lobster and prawns -- my only critique would be that the mac could have been a little more al dente. We then shared a Chopped Caesar, which we really enjoyed. For the entree, we shared a special of the night comprising Grilled Mahi Map with Fried Coconut Shrimp over Sweet Potato (taro) Mash. It did not disappoint. The Mahi Mahi was super fresh, perfectly grilled, moist and flavorful. The Coconut Shrimp had a nice light coating, perfectly fried, fresh and juicy. So glad we decided to share as this was a generous portion. It's also hard to resist trying one of their desserts calling out to anyone sitting by the long display counter of a couple of dozen different desserts! We settled on the Lilikoi Pie which was quite a good finish to the meal. We will definitely try to visit again on our next trip to Maui. read more

Some friends and I visited this cute little restaurant last summer. We stumbled upon it on our way up to the lavender farm. The breakfast and service was great! We raved about it to all our friends with pictures on IG when we got back home to Honolulu. Fast forward to this past weekend (Labor Day weekend)- We had a party of 16 but 4 of our friends arrived before us. By the time the other 12 of us arrived, our 4 friends had already finished eating. I waited near the front door for a bit to get seated. No one had approached me so our friends who had already finished eating had told me to sit down at the tables near them. I assumed that they sat themselves when they arrived, too since there was no sign that said "please wait to be seated". About half of the restaurant is empty so I wanted to make sure I reserved the tables near our friends so we could all be together in case a rush of customers come in. As I'm sitting and talking to my friend at the table nearby, a young Caucasian girl (waitress) approached me with somewhat of a bravado and rudely asked how many in my party. I told her we have 12 and she rolled her eyes and proceeded to shove (and I use the word 'shove' because that's exactly what she did) two tables together as if she were upset. She shoved it so hard that the plexiglass almost came off of the table-she ended up having to pull it back on and straighten it. I figured she was having a bad day or upset she got stuck with a large party, so I let it go. She started to clean a third table and I went over to let her know that she didn't have to connect the tables and that she could leave it separated if it's easier for her. She looked up at me and replied in a very sassy tone by saying "whatever you want, it's up to you". I told her that I'm trying to make it easier for her so if it's easier to put tables together it's fine or if she wants to leave it separate that's fine, too since I got the feeling she was upset that she had to connect tables together for my large party. By this time I've had it already and can't stand this passive-aggressive behavior she's giving us. When she came back for the high chair I asked her if everything is okay and she replied again in a sassy tone "Everything is just great!!!!" So I said, "I'm sorry, but I'm getting the vibe that you're upset with me for some reason and I can't figure out what I said or did that upset you so much. I was just trying to make it easier on you by asking you if you'd prefer the tables to be separated, then it's fine with us." Her reply to me was "Well, first of all, you walk into the restaurant and you don't talk to any of us, or tell us how many in your party and you sit at a table. Then you tell me you have a large party and you rush me to get the tables together for you." I said "I'm sorry, but we're not from here so I wasn't sure if we're supposed to seat ourselves or what. There's no sign in the front of the restaurant that says "please wait to be seated" and no one came up to ask me how many in my party or greet me at the door. I'm not rushing you to get any tables together. All I told you was that if it's easier, you can keep tables separated." And then she walked away from me and told her co workers something because they all looked at us while she was talking to them. I went up to the lady who I assumed was the manager (older Caucasian lady) at the register and apologized and said "I'm sorry, I have no idea what she's upset about; I wasn't rude or anything and I was trying to really make her job easier since she seemed upset as soon as I told her how many were in my party." She told me, "Nope, no worries, everything is fine. Don't worry about it. It's just when a large party comes in, we have to figure out how to arrange tables-that's all. Just have a seat, everything is fine, but you'll have the same server." I was thinking to myself "well, that's just great!" We ended up having a new server who was nice. But I still got the vibe that everyone didn't appreciate our business. No, we weren't difficult customers, no, we didn't split the check 5 different ways or ask them for side this or side that; nor were our kids unruly. I observed how the first waitress acted to everyone else that came in (mostly Caucasian tourist visiting from mainland) and she was extremely pleasant and nice to them! We were appalled!! She was even sweet to the couple that came in and sat themselves at a table! They didn't wait for anyone to greet them at the door or wait to be seated-they sat themselves!! She didn't have any problem with them! The food is good, but I think the lady who was the manager could have diffused the situation and appease me(the customer) by apologizing on behalf of the waitress. There was not one "sorry" that was said. And just as a side note-the "please wait to be seated" sign was placed outside after all of this happened. read more

Okay, so this place is great for locals. For tourists, it's off the beaten path, but totally worth the visit if you're heading down from Haleakala. The white chocolate chip pancake with macadamia nuts and coconut syrup is so good! It has a generous amount of the chips and the fluffiness is balanced perfectly with the crunch of Mac nuts. Very good! I'm a Benedict person and as I'm sure other Benedict aficionados know, it's all about the Hollandaise sauce. I had their veggie Benedict and it was fantastic! We have gone to Kula Bistro for 10 years. We usually find the service and food excellent. Today we went for lunch. Waited for 20 minutes before we saw a waitress. Food was slow arriving. Then when I paid with credit card...they charged me $1.50 service charge. There is no notice on the menu or the front door. When I made a comment all I got was there is a notice by the cashier. You pay at your table. No one sees that sign. I thought that was dirty. What a shame. When Kula Lodge opens back up they will see a reduction in customers. read more

This place is open until 9, had a line out the door (always a good sign), clean, friendly waitstaff, and a clean bathroom!!! Score! We had been eating all day so no one was particularly hungry; I had a chicken Caesar which was great, my gf the risotto which she really enjoyed, and our friend had the shrimp scampi. I tried his- it could have been more flavorful and they don't make their own pasta, but it was well cooked. They had a ton of specials. Our waiter wasn't the nicest and seemed annoyed that we weren't regulars. There's a girl who clears tables and such, she has a miserable look on her face and just shuffles her feet around, never once saw her be pleasant with anyone. The lady who was in charge, not sure if she's a manager or the owner, she was the friendliest of them all. Food...I ordered the pesto pasta and it was ok. I probably wouldn't rush back to have it again but it was ok. My husband ordered the coconut shrimp. He said it wasn't very flavorful, didn't eat much of it. The lady in charge took it off our check. We offered to pay for it but she insisted on taking it off. When we first arrived it wasn't too busy, maybe 3 or 4 other tables. Food wasn't wonderful and service was a bit slow for no busier than they were. By the time we left, the place was packed and a long line outside. One positive, you can BYOB. AHH THE BEST! We had fantastic service. On our way driving up to the volcano, we called and ordered ahead. Lindsey picked up the phone and told us that she was gonna put the order in right before it was about to get busy, so we could have our food by the time we got there. This was a ton of food and there will be leftovers if plan to be fat like us. Something else to think about is pasta and swim suits don't mix well. They say not to swim for 30 minutes after eating and this place would say not to wear a swimming suit for 30 hours after eating! My wife and I love this place! We stop by every time we visit Maui. It is a tradition to eat here the day we arrive. Since you can't check into hotels until after 3 pm it is a good use of time. Now for the review on the food. We started with the coconut battered shrimp. They were very good having a lite sauce at the base of the dish and on top of mashed sweet potatoes. My wife got the beef tips and wild mushrooms ($23.95) and it was good but not great. It had a lite flavor but wasn't very memorable. I got the chicken Parmesan ($18.95) and it was really good. Noodles were cooked right and the chicken was so good. The pomodoro sauce was good that it was on but not my favorite. All in all it was great. My wife and I came to Maui for our honeymoon, staying in a condo in Kihei (highly recommend this area). We've been here for 6 days now and have eaten at some of the highest rated spots in Kihei, Lahaina, and Wailea. We went to Kula Bistro last night and it is by far the best spot we've been to this whole time. Thinking about going back again tonight as it's our last night on the island. Kula Bistro is BYOB so find some booze and bring it with you. You'll want to get there around 5:00-6:00p to get in line. We started out with the seafood stuffed mushrooms which were fresh and delicious. We also split a Caesar salad. It was huge, so two, maybe three could share as an app. So good! We each got our own entree. I had the Vodka Penne Pomodoro. The shrimp and scallops were cooked perfectly and the pasta covered in vodka sauce was fantastic! My wife ordered the Beef Tips and Wild Mushroom Pasta dish. I've traveled a lot and had a ton of pasta, including many in the Italian countryside. The Beef Tips and Wild Mushroom pasta dish at Kula Bistro is THE BEST PASTA DISH I'VE EVER HAD. We finished our meal with dessert. I had the Peanut Butter Mousse Cake and my wife had a Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream Sandwich. Both were amazing!!!! There was a 30 min wait on a Wednesday evening but they were super friendly and said we could buy wine or beer at the liquor store across the street and bring it over to drink. They even put our bottle of wine in ice. They ran out of wine glasses but gave us water glasses which we thought was so fun! Everything about the food was on point - the presentation, options and taste. So delicious! OMG and the dessert! I couldn't decide so we got two.
