Since moving to this island three summers ago, I don't get to go out and eat out often because there's not much places to eat. I've found Kum Yo's similar to my fancy. The is great awesome just as I like it. The lady who always serves does not smile, however she's gentle and friendly and fast and puts lots of food for a $25 plate lunch. The inside is decent little areas to eat if you decide to. Will definitely keep coming here. read more

I came to Kum Yo's to pick up lunch before a flight. The parking lot infront was empty on a Tuesday morning. The workers were kind and efficient. You have the option to build your own plate with noodles, meat, and other sides. Everything looked so delicious, but I got one of the premade bentos with meat jun and dumplings. The meat jun was soft and flavorful. I will definitely be back if I ever need a quick meal. read more

First of all, this place does not serve Korean food, so they should remove that from the Yelp cuisine types in the profile. Second, the food is mediocre at best, and way overpriced for what it is. I got a hamburger steak plate with rice, mac salad, and crab (imitation) & broccoli side and my wife got pork adobo, fish jun, rice and broccoli and total came out to $34.82! Third the place is run down and doesn't even have a bathroom for customers - what are we paying for here? You're better off getting a plate lunch at KTA or just about anywhere else read more

2 stars based on price. I'd give a 4 for taste if it were a little more reasonable. I get it, everything is going up and costs increases get passed on to the consumer. But really, $5 for a 3 inch tuna pattt? $2.75 for a 4 in lumpia Whose diameter was less than an inch? That's just a bit of a Stretch. I was headed for the beach and stopped here to pick up some pupus. The ladies in the store were really sweet. I was having a hard time deciding and they were patient with me. I decided on pork tofu patties, Korean chicken, japchae, seaweed salad, shrimps cooked in egg, mandu, and a couple other things. Everything tasted great. My friends and I enjoyed it all. Kum Yo's is one of our favorite lunch spots. I love everything about it, except that their prices went up, but then again, whose didn't??? Anytime I treat my coworkers to lunch they chose lunch from Kum Yo's. What we love-that it's buffet style so you just point to what you want. They have so many sides. We love their greens, their broccoli crab salad, and their daikon. We also love their fish jun with tartar sauce, mochiko chicken, dumplings and their noodles. I always grab a sushi bento too. In a day and age in which the price of a good plate lunch is skyrocketing beyond belief (some places charging ~$15.00 for a two-choice plate), Kum Yo's Okazuya is keeping it real. Boasting a pretty wide array of ready-made local (Korean/Hawaiian) favorites, you can get yourself a heaping plate of food for only around $9.00. In my opinion, the amount of food plus the quality is well worth the price. And their fare isn't limited only to combination plates. Kum Yo's has piles of bentos and spam musubis on deck as well. I've only been to Kum Yo's a couple of times, but the food has been consistently bomb in each of my visits. More than good enough to instill it as one of my go-to spots in town for a quick, reasonably priced bite for lunch on hectic work days. As far as seating to eat inside goes, there are a few tables and booths to sit down at, but really not too much. Most people do just stop by to pick up their food anyway, so finding somewhere to sit isn't usually a problem. Kum Yo's Okazuya is pretty conveniently located right around the Hilo industrial area, next door to Automotive Supply Center. As long as you don't find yourself arriving in the middle of the lunch rush, the parking will typically be pretty good, too. read more

Really great value for the bentos, $8 filled me up. Managed to make it in the store at a somewhat slow moment, only to see a line out the door forming behind me as I was checking out. I definitely understand why after trying the food! The mochiko chicken is as good as it gets, the mandoo had a great ratio of filling to wrapper, and the kimchee was perfect. Kum Yo's Okazuya has ready made bentos for less than $6, or you can order a plate and choose your own items. I arrived here about 50 minutes prior to closing and I didn't see any bentos that appeased to me, so I got a plate. I had rice, mochiko chicken, kim chee, sea weed, and cucumber. My total came out to just under $8. The male server taking my order was helpful at describing what I was looking at, but felt just a little too pushy, constantly asking me "is that all? Is that all?" I felt rushed, even though there was no one behind me. I would equate the food here to that of Cham Cham's. It is good, but not great. The mochiko chicken was light on the batter and had a more mild taste than I'm used to. The kim chee and cucumber tasted just like Cham Cham's, and the sea weed, I thought, was slightly better. If you are in the area and want convenient Korean food at a reasonable price then Kum Yo's is a safe choice. However, it is not someplace I would go out of my way for. read more

Nice okazu place, used to be Ryan's. The food here is the usual Korean/local spread, but better quality. The meat jun was really good, so was the long rice. Also, the Kim chee is good, but mild, and the mochiko chicken is good, but light on flavor. The counter people are friendly and happy. Overall, good food and evenly priced. I do miss Ryan's, but kum yo's is a good replacement. Seeing the other reviews and pics, gonna do dine in breakfast or brunch on the next visit! read more

Could have added more rice $13.95 I started eating the plate and noted two sides had an odd flavor not the usual fermented flavor of kimchee or greens. I believe it was the wattabee and the thin strip daikon. Even though the flavor was off I still ate it for the experience. And oh boy now 2 days later and I'm laid up in bed near the toilet. Sorry no picture. Didn't think I'd be writing a review. This was my first time at Kum Yos. Probably my last. If any body else got sick on Tuesday 10/3 it would be useful to know. read more

Was waiting for my van to get serviced at Dodge across the street when I seen this place outside the window. I decided to walk across and grab something to eat. I have received a good customer service here with welcoming employees, however their food was just okay. For $6, you get lots of rice, some meat jun and gyoza. Chicken teriyaki still had chicken hair on it! If you want authentic, no frills Korean food that you get at a Korean cookout, this is the spot. All the different banchans are made fresh daily and the portions are generous. Their spicy pork bbq is my personal favorite. The kimchi could have been marinated a little longer, but it was still the best kimchi I've had on the Big Island. I can't believe that Kum Yo's only has one review. As this Korean man can attest, this is the best Korean food in Hilo, hands down. You can either order from large variety of hot line ala carte dishes or off the menu, which includes stuff like sondubu chijjae (soft tofu soup) and jjajangmyeon (blackbean sauce noodles), which is very good for Hilo, and way better than Cham Cham. The osobagi (stuffed cucumber kimchi), kkakdugi (radish), and buchu kimchi (chives) is really good. If you order off the menu, they usually give you 4 choices from the cold dish selections (kimchee/tofu/other good stuff). Order to-go or eat in house. I love her fried chicken, which I'm guessing is coated with crush up seasame seeds and flour and marinated in some sort of light shoyu based sauce before frying. I really like her fried rice too. So unlike a Korean BBQ. We went for the mini buffet and then made the nice ladies behind the counter explain what everything was. Every choice we made was really tasty. Three stars for the food. I had a $5.50 bento...meat jun was very tender & the dipping sauce was delicious. Mochiko chicken was tender as well. Kim chee was crunchy with just the right amount of heat. The steam table selection is very good. Although I don't understand why there is no meat jun in the steam table...the only way to get it is in the bento or by ordering an expensive $11.95 lunch plate. Had to minus two stars for having to deal with unfriendly, abrupt, Caucasian man who yelled at an employee for grabbing the wrong take-out plate and kept rushing me to order. read more

Came here for breakfast on the way to the airport. LOVED the fried rice w/bacon and egg (the menu says spam, but they kindly substituted). Came back a second time and ordered the same thing (it's addictive), but I'm looking forward to trying other dishes! read more
