    Meat jun and mandoo
    Sydni K.

I came to Kum Yo's to pick up lunch before a flight. The parking lot infront was empty on a Tuesday morning. The workers were kind and efficient. You have the option to build your own plate with noodles, meat, and other sides. Everything looked so delicious, but I got one of the premade bentos with meat jun and dumplings. The meat jun was soft and flavorful. I will definitely be back if I ever need a quick meal.

Mochiko chicken, teri chicken, and long rice. Bomb.

In a day and age in which the price of a good plate lunch is skyrocketing beyond belief (some places charging ~$15.00 for a two-choice plate), Kum Yo's Okazuya is keeping it real. Boasting a pretty wide array of ready-made local (Korean/Hawaiian) favorites, you can get yourself a heaping plate of food for only around $9.00. In my opinion, the amount of food plus the quality is well worth the price. And their fare isn't limited only to combination plates. Kum Yo's has piles of bentos and spam musubis on deck as well. I've only been to Kum Yo's a couple of times, but the food has been consistently bomb in each of my visits. More than good enough to instill it as one of my go-to spots in town for a quick, reasonably priced bite for lunch on hectic work days. As far as seating to eat inside goes, there are a few tables and booths to sit down at, but really not too much. Most people do just stop by to pick up their food anyway, so finding somewhere to sit isn't usually a problem. Kum Yo's Okazuya is pretty conveniently located right around the Hilo industrial area, next door to Automotive Supply Center. As long as you don't find yourself arriving in the middle of the lunch rush, the parking will typically be pretty good, too.

Mochiko chicken and fried mandoo bento ($8)

Really great value for the bentos, $8 filled me up. Managed to make it in the store at a somewhat slow moment, only to see a line out the door forming behind me as I was checking out. I definitely understand why after trying the food! The mochiko chicken is as good as it gets, the mandoo had a great ratio of filling to wrapper, and the kimchee was perfect. This'll be my new grab n go lunch spot for sure!

Best Korean food in Hilo. Good service, clean reastaurant, super tasty food. Lots of bento and ala carte options available if you're in a rush to get some tasty food.

Kum Yo's Okazuya has ready made bentos for less than $6, or you can order a plate and choose your own items. I arrived here about 50 minutes prior to closing and I didn't see any bentos that appeased to me, so I got a plate. I had rice, mochiko chicken, kim chee, sea weed, and cucumber. My total came out to just under $8. The male server taking my order was helpful at describing what I was looking at, but felt just a little too pushy, constantly asking me "is that all? Is that all?" I felt rushed, even though there was no one behind me. I would equate the food here to that of Cham Cham's. It is good, but not great. The mochiko chicken was light on the batter and had a more mild taste than I'm used to. The kim chee and cucumber tasted just like Cham Cham's, and the sea weed, I thought, was slightly better. If you are in the area and want convenient Korean food at a reasonable price then Kum Yo's is a safe choice. However, it is not someplace I would go out of my way for.

Ala carte. Long rice, spring rolls, shrimp tempura...

Good food, never had a line, fast service and able to sit down and eat. Miss getting plate lunch for field trips when I was little.

There was also live music with a lady playing guitar solo and singing! Service was amazing! We never had to wait long to order/get the bill. We were most impressed by the fact that the waitress made sure to split our Hilo local plate into two plates to make it much easier to share! We almost thought we had received two orders because of how well-plated they were. - Poke tower (8/10): Solid choice for an appetizer! There were ample portions of poke, and the flavors were nice. Not a super stand out dish though. - Hilo local plate (9.5/10): If you want to taste a wide range of Hawaiian cuisine in one dish, I would highly recommend getting this one! The Kalbi ribs were sooo good! They were juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The Kalua pork was pretty good, and both meats paired well with the rice which had an interesting savory haupia sauce drizzled on it. The mango chili slaw and pineapple salsa added a nice tang to balance everything out. - Triple lilikoi pie (5/10): Wayyy too sweet and sugary for our liking, and you can barely taste the lilikoi flavor. We ended up just picking at the graham cracker crust and couldn't finish the rest. It seemed like one of those desserts that are premade unfortunately, and we wish we hadn't ordered this dessert.

There were various options for everyone and easy ordering on the kiosk with pictures, which was super helpful. The dining area is spacious and breezy. I got a green river and portugese sausage loco moco, which are two of my favorite things! A lot of places don't have green river, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it being sold here. The Portuguese sausage was juicy and the gravy was the perfect consistency for the loco moco. I loved how many different meat options they had for their loco mocos. As a born-and-raised local, rice, gravy, and eggs will win me over every time, and I really wanted to love this place for the history alone. I'll be honest though -- the hype set the bar high, and I left a little let down. The regular loco moco was just okay. The hamburger patty tasted pre-made or frozen, though the gravy was solid (thank goodness). The beef stew also tasted pre-made and was lighter on the tomato flavor than I prefer. I ordered the steak as well (around $30), and it came out very well done. On the positive side, they offer a ton of plate lunch options, the space is extremely well kept for a local diner, and there's plenty of parking. It's covered outdoor seating only, but it's comfortable and clean. What surprised me most was the lack of visible history. I expected to see more storytelling about the loco moco origins -- photos, signage, staff sharing pride in it -- something that really leaned into that legacy. It felt a little missing. Still glad I tried it for the experience, but for me, it didn't quite live up to the legendary reputation.
