We have had this diner on our list of "must try" places for over five years and finally made the drive up to Perry! (Fun fact, we told our kids we were driving to Perry and they thought we meant Paris... ha! Not quite the same as Paris, but still a gastronomical delight!) As other reviews have mentioned, service was very friendly, informative, and surprisingly quick. Our server made several recommendations that we were so grateful for as our food was extremely tasty. We ordered the Perry burger and the chicken fried steak with jalapeño gravy - no worries, the gravy was not spicy at all, just extra flavorful as promised. The interior is decorated like a traditional diner and has a lot of old photos and fun items to look at. Our only disappointment is they were sold out of their legendary cinnamon rolls that day, no problem though - we will be back! read more

Great nostalgic restaurant celebrating 100 years in business this year. Great food, wait staff and ownership. It's like stepping back in time with even stories of Pretty Boy Floyd eating lunch there once in the 1930's. He entered the restaurant with his Tommy gun, ordered everyone out except the staff and ordered "the biggest steak you have", with his machine gun on the table the whole time. After his lunch he left a $20 bill on the table and left. I highly recommend! read more

We drove from OKC after reading some of the reviews for the cafe. The chicken fried steak was mentioned quite a bit with good reviews. The onion rings were also mentioned as some of the best around. We started by ordering the onion rings for our appetizer but we're told they were "out" of them. Which seemed odd as it was just noon when we ordered them so unless they are popular as a breakfast item it must have been that no one cared to make them. We both ordered the chicken fried steak dinner one with mashed potatoes and one with fries both with green beans. The food came out fast and was hot. The chicken fried steak had a good crust but the meat was tough. The milk gravy was very good. Then my second bite of the mashed potatoes had a hair in it that had to be at least 8 inches long. It was a dark hair so I am sure it wasn't mine. I called the waitress over and since there were tables with people at them close by I kept my voice down and showed her the hair. She offered to get me something else and although I wasn't sure I would be able to eat I ordered a plain burger patty without the bun it was greasy and had no flavor. I took two bites and was done. Before we left I visited the restroom. There's only one for everyone to use. I am disabled and have to use a walker. It was very disappointing that the only bathroom available is NOT handicap accessible! I understand that the building is very old and keeping the history and nostalgia is important...but so is the safety of all customers. I was not able to use my walker as it did not fit through the door and there were no hand rails at all. Concerns with the food can happen at times and are not deliberate. But choosing not to do something as easy as installing railing in the restroom is pathetic. Shame on the owners. You could at least let customers know when they arrive that no thought for anyone that needs a handicap accessible restroom has been given. read more

The archetype of a "home cooked meal" is often a myth when purveying eateries and restaurants. Few and far between are the diners of yore that go elbow deep into granny's fridge to procure a meal that satiates not only hunger... but homesickness. Who can resist such an impressively nostalgic exterior? And the pronounced history of this establishment--now 95 years--is enough testament for me that quality grub is to be had here. The staff was indelible with their charm and grace. I would've sat at the counter but the warm air and park bench dappled in sunlight across the street was too enticing. You know what else was enticing? My chicken fried steak breakfast platter! Or at least myself and the neighborhood crows. We gave it a try for lunch. We had a chicken fried steak and a hamburger. At first you think things are going to be a little slow, but they kick the food out fairly fast. The chicken fry was a pan fried, chicken fried steak with a generous portion of French fries and a homemade dinner roll. It was good. Same with the hamburger. We sat in the booth closest to the kitchen and the hamburger was still sizzling when they sat it on the table! It truly is a little laid back cafe in Perry OK close to I-35. According to a news article on the wall, the place has had the same name and the same location for over 40 years (the oldest of such in OK). Best chicken fried steak I've had in a very long time. Everything was cooked just right. Home made dinner rolls were very tasty. The people treated us like we were regulars. We read the history of this place on Yelp & had to stop. Located 2 miles off I-35 in Perry Oklahoma it is a worthwhile detour. Filled with locals on a Saturday during lunch it was a virtual treasure trove of historic memorabilia dating back to the 20's. The service friendly & food outstanding. The hot beef with brown gravy melted in my mouth and the chicken fried steak was as good as you would expect in an old school Oklahoma diner. Took a nice drive up to Perry to try out this cafe. Quaint tiny dinner. The memorabilia on the walls was fun to read. It's like a trip back in time to when meals could be purchased for less than $1. Quite an extensive menu, everything from potato skins to steaks to Mexican food. There were daily specials but we decided on burgers for this trip. We also ordered a side of onion rings to share. The burgers were really good and a great price. The mushroom burger had mushroom gravy on it and needed a fork and knife to eat but was well worth it! The onion rights were homemade and very good. The hubs and I were on our way to Osage Hills state park and needed to fill our bellies! Found this little gem of a cafe on Yelp and thought we'd given them a shot! Let me just tell you how happy we were that we chose this place! Everything is from scratch! The rolls, the hamburger buns, onion rings, chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and pies!!! WOW! My hub had the steak sandwich special with onion rings while I had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and corn! Let me just say that we both "made a happy plate" as our granddaughter would say! Ate every morsel! The chicken fried steak melted in my mouth, the most tender CFS I've ever had!! The mashed potatoes were just the way I like them with no skins! And what can I say about corn... it's been my fav since before I even had teeth! The waitress was friendly and gave us some history on the cafe! It's the oldest continuously operated cafe in the state of Oklahoma! I believe it's in its 96th year! PLEASE if you have the chance take a drive to Perry for a day trip and eat you some delicious homemade food in this little cafe that resembles an old theatre on the outside! Lots of famous people have eaten here... Machine Gun Kelly (infamous bank robber in the 1930s) is an example! Food was inexpensive made to order and pretty good but service was out right rude. We left our ball game on Saturday got there at 1:15pm before they closed at 2:00. They had half the lobby shut down and proceeded to tell my sister in law that they close in 20min and she needed to tell rest of the ball players to not come in because they only have 1 cook and one waitress. She then complained openly about working since 5:00am and after my sister in law got up and left she openly says we'll that doesn't upset me at all. We would of left but had already ordered. The remaining waitress apologized to three tables for lady over and over maybe because she was embarrassed or maybe to try to salvage a tip. I will never go back and assuming that other waitress works there I wouldn't recommend it to anyone ever. read more

Found a hair in my omelet, never said anything about it until. The Owner asked how our food was. I said great until I found this hair. I picked it up showing him it off my plate. He says wow that's a light hair. He then looked close at my hair line. I then lifted my hat to show him I was bald. that it's wasn't my hair and that I literally pulled it from the omelet. However it took over an hour for us to get our food two plates pretty simple stuff. there were also multiple tables that walked out because they had been waiting for over an hour plus. Recommended by a member of a social group to which I belong who stated he called ahead to advise them of our plans and to let them know we'd be wanting some coconut cream pie. Sure wish that person had been with us today to see the disaster that unfolded. 16 of 18 of our group arrived before 11 a.m. since we had been told to show up early because the pies would go quickly during the lunch rush. Upon arrival we were told that only 3 pieces of apple pie remained and the only other pie available was cherry. When we started to order we were told they were already out of ribs and brisket. At least 2 in our group ordered a chili burger but....no chili to be seen. One ordered a chopped steak lunch with gravy but.....no gravy to be seen. Another ordered the beef liver lunch which was overcooked. The manager (?) stopped by to see how we were and stated she didn't have our visit on her calendar. We made her fully aware that we were perplexed as to how the pies for which they are most famous were sold out well before lunch. What an extremely pleasant surprise! We found this hidden gem while headed down I-35 toward Dallas. Feeling a little peckish, we checked Yelp and up came Kumback Lunch, about 2 miles east of I-35 in Perry, Oklahoma. The name did not sound too inviting, but they had a high rating and great reviews. When we pulled up, we knew we had hit gold. On the Perry town square, the front is bright art deco with a billboard and neon lights, looking more like a 1930s movie theatre although this diner has been open since 1926 and has a long and illustrious past. Great food, big portions, reasonable prices, and excellent service with all the things you would expect to find at a diner in the middle of Oklahoma ... chicken fried steak, meatloaf, hot roast beef sandwiches, mashed potatoes and gravy, homemade pies ... they have it all! The only negative, and one of my pet peeves, was the entrees arriving within two minutes of getting our starters (a massive portion of onion rings - $6.95) and the salad that came with my chicken fried steak ($9.99). My chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes, which were very good while hot, became lukewarm and almost room temperature by the time I finished my salad (which was also very good with a sliced egg, tomato, onion and lettuce with bleu cheese dressing). My wife's Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($5.99) was basic, coming only with a few dill pickle slices and two slices of tomato, not a great value for two slices of bread and a slice or two of American cheese. If not for the entrees being rushed out and the overpriced grilled cheese, Kumback Lunch (which is open for dinner by the way) would have gotten the exclusive and elusive 10 Bombs Out Of 10 and a spot on my "Wall of Fame", but alas, it was not meant to be. Let people enjoy finishing their salad or starter before bringing entrees to the table and charge no more that $3.99 for a no frills grilled cheese, otherwise you are doing a great job ... y'all kumback now, hear? How cute is this place?! Kumback has an adorable restaurant front with street parking. There's antiques & photos galore inside. I have had excellent service when I come. The waitstaff is so friendly & open to talk with you about the menu. I love their chicken fry, which they cook on the grill top. I get mine with their real country gravy, mash potatoes & Okra. 40+ year old diner in Perry still looks like it must have looked in its early years...or even a diner from the 60s. So, if you like quaint, this place is for you. As to the food, my lunch today was excellent. I order one of the day's specials...fried fish. I received my food within 10-15 minutes, fresh and hot, with two roughly 8" fillets fried home style (not cornmeal). Taste was excellent as were my two sides, tots (admittedly impossible to screw up) and mac and cheese. Wait staff was friendly and appropriately attentive. $12.50 including sweet tea plus tax and tip is about average these days. Nothing fancy but tasty comfort food! read more

I come here with my father every time I visit him in Perry. This weekend was no exception. It is a great little place to go to soak up some of the history of this town and to experience that small town feel and hospitality. I do wish they would update a little though, not enough to take away from the charm but the ceiling could use a little fixing up and the place could use a deep clean. We get the pie every time because it is always fabulous. When I make cream pies at home I do it on the stove and not using a pudding mix, and you can tell that they do the same thing. The coconut cream here is almost as good as the one I make from my great-grandmother's recipe. I like the food here too, it is tasty! The service is always quick and attentive. If you find yourself in Perry Oklahoma, make sure to come in to this joint, even if you just get a piece of pie, and soak up the atmosphere. read more

(I didn't know Buster Keaton was from Perry) Great friendly service. They seem happy to be working there. We shared a 16 oz sirloin that was cooked perfectly but lacked a little flavor. This was the worst food I have ever been served. I ordered chicken fried steak with eggs over medium. The egg whites were undercooked. Some spots were runny while other areas were overcooked. One yolk was cooked hard and the other yolk was okay. The steak was probably cooked the day before the first time. It was hard and overcooked and very dry. It had a dark color to it instead of the brown crust you want to see on the chicken fry. This one meal was over 16.00 and the quality was very bad. Historic restaurant in small town atmosphere of Perry, OK. Art Deco decor combined with diner-style menu offerings. Surprising that quite a few Mexican dishes were on menu. My open face roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy was decent. Philly steak sandwich looked good and came with generous portion of tasty French fries. Very good traditional and historic diner. This place is 90 years old! I haven't eaten here in 10 years but got a chance to stop in today. I had my old favorite, cheeseburger with mayo and onion rings. The burger is good, juicy, loaded with condiments. The onion rings are huge and have a delicious flavored batter that doesn't fall off the rings. I finished with a piece of lemon pie that was average, but topped off the meal with a nice not-so-sweet finish. The service was exceptional and the old-fashioned waitresses loved to visit. read more

I do not understand how this place is so highly regarded. This place gets three stars because the service is excellent. I do not for a second want to disparage anyone I've ever met working there. They are all amazing. The food, however, is sad. It is a typical greasy-spoon diner meal but without anything elevating it, whatsoever. The pies (their claim to fame in the area) are average, as well. I think the only reason this place still exists is the long history combined with the sheer lack of competition in such a tiny town. read more
