    Shrimp Tempura Roll
    Ryan G.

TL;DR Kumar is a local favorite serving up great sushi and Japanese cuisine, and also has the best shrimp tempura I've ever had. Kumo is a family favorite even for my friends the live out of town. When they come in they want to come Back to Kumo. We have never had a bad experience here. The staff and waiters are always nice and welcoming. Service and food is never slow and the food is always prepared well and consistently. My favorite dish here is the shrimp tempura it's THE ABSOLUTE BEST and the reheat ability is also top tier with an air fryer. They have a wide variety of sushi and appetizers, and also have hibachi. Which is awesome when you want that dish without the show and the price premium. Everyone certainly will find something that they like here. The inside is nice, but can get slightly cramped when it's busy but it's cozy. The music is lively, the locals love it, and it's also great for birthdays. I highly recommend giving them a visit.

2 rolls here. They used to be this big, now they are half the size

I I'm changing my review from 4 stars to 2 stars because over the past year the sushi portions have noticeably decreased. The Crazy Salmon sushi used to be my go-to, at $18 it was satisfying and felt worth it. Now the pieces are about half the size they used to be, and I still feel hungry after finishing my meal, which makes it hard to justify the price. In the picture the crazy salmon roll and spicy tuna roll, from last summer when portions were still nice and big.

First time visiting the restaurant. Ambience was beautiful. Food was amazing. Service was excellent, as well. I'm definitely coming back here again.

No gatekeeping here - introducing our favorite sushi takeout spot - hidden gem - Kumo! We started off with Gyoza and rock shrimp, which is their play on bang bang shrimp! They have amazing sushi rolls which we tried the volcano, black dragon, hot girls! Amazing presentation, but the showstopper was the limited time seared bluefin wild tuna nigiri. They torch it so that it is very soft. Absolutely melting in your mouth. Order some sake or wine and enjoy your sushi, hibachi, bento box in Alexandria, VA!

Nice quiet date night for dinner. Lovely seating and environment. Staff were quick, helpful in decisions, and very polite. Food arrived surprisingly quick, for shrimp fried rice noodles and sushi. Drinks were refilled promptly. Prices are very affordable. Shrimp fried rice was one of the best in the area if not the best. The extras within include onions, carrots, and scrambled eggs. It was great as is, no yum yum sauce needed. But since I had it, I tried a little with and it was another kind of magic. We'll be back. Apologies, forgot to take photos of the food. I was that excited.

Got here at 9:15, it closes at 10. The hostess quickly told me that they were about to close the kitchen and seemed annoyed. So I just told her I wanted mango sticky rice and she asked if I wanted it to go, I said no. It came out hot but with an eyelash in it. Normally I would just send it back and night write a review but if you want to close at 9, just do that. If you're open until 10 please make customers feel welcomed and not rushed. The waitress was pleasant but the whole experience was unfortunate.

Visiting my brother and decided to do takeout. Ordered six different rolls and all were delicious!!! Wish I coukd take this pkace back home with me to NC. Everything came in a really pretty presentation. The person who took my order over the phone was very sweet and accommodated our sesame allergy.

We've only been here once but we'll definitely be back! I'm already craving the Incredible Hulk roll. Our first time at Kumo was absolute perfection. First, let me compliment the staff. The service was impeccable. Everyone was friendly, accommodating and attentive. Our waitress was never too far away, but she kept an eye on us from afar and visited the table as soon as I would look her way. I love that, because it was a date between my husband and I. We were able to have intimate conversation, receive our food and drinks, yet not feel interrupted. Even the owner/manager checked on us once. Now, the food was delicious! I played it safe with lunch hibachi because I wanted to try two of their specialty rolls. Everything was freshly made and hot off the grill. I enjoy complex flavors in my food, where you get layers of seasonings rather than bland tastes. The specialty rolls were absolutely amazing. I highly recommend this place for a date or friend's meetup. The bathrooms were clean and smelled good. There's plenty of free parking, because it's in a shopping center, but didn't let that dissuade you. The food is quality!

Pokemon roll (special) and California roll

I came here with a friend on an abnormally warm November day, where everyone in NOVA was in this shopping center. Once we managed to find parking, we were welcomed with a relatively empty restaurant and warm staff. My friend and I split spring rolls, and I got both the pokemon roll (shrimp tempura, lobster, red tobiko and crunchies with spicy mayo) and a california roll. Sushi always skews a little high but I have to say this food was pretty good and filling for the price in the area. The staff were super attentive and the food came out quickly. Not gonna lie, I'd probably not come all the way out here when there's closer sushi to me, but if you happen to be nearby, it's a safe bet!

Is the sushi rice cooked with mirin alcohol? I'm Muslim, so I don't drink or eat anything containing alcohol.

    Is inside restaurant open?

They're officially open as of 3 weeks ago!!!

    Safe for pregnant women?

The restaurant offers a full menu. There are many regular cooked entrées that you could eat if you are unable to eat sushi.

Does this place have a happy hour for sushi?

I don't think so, majority of their sushi rolls are specialty and even after coming for several years, I've never heard of happy hour specials :[ I do know they have lunch specials!

The eel over rice for $19.00, how big is the portion? It is about half the size of one whole eel?

eel sushi or some maki roll with eel on the top? For eel sushi is $2.50 per piece. For maki roll, depend on which roll you like. We do have a lot of rolls come with eel inside… Read more

Atmosphere: Tucked into a quiet Kingstown strip mall. Interior is nice if not a bit dated and dark. They seem to only have hibachi tables, and when we arrived, it was empty (we did also have a reservation). It got much busier earlier, and I think that is because it takes time to move people in and out with the hibachi. Service: The greeter and server were excellent. We observed some other hibachi chefs who seemed fun and engaged. Our chef, however, seemed really checked out and was not into doing the whole shtick. Here's where I lowered my rating from a 4.5 or even a 5 to a 3 - My wife and I are allergic to shellfish, and my mother doesn't eat shrimp because it's not kosher. The server asked us about dietary restrictions, and we noted right away that we wanted our shrimp that comes with each meal to go to my father, the only member of our party who eats it. We also requested that the rest of the food be cooked further away from the shrimp and not make direct contact, etc. We also repeated this request to the chef again when he started preparing our meal. Despite this, he proceeded to prepare the shrimp with it touching the chicken and beef, and used the same hibachi utensil the entire time, moving between the shrimp and the other meats and veggies without care. Luckily, we don't have a strong contact response , but my throat did feel itchy after the meal. I think this was a reasonable request and one that has been accommodated at every other hibachi restaurant I have ever been to - at Disney, they simply accommodated us by cooking the shrimp after everything else was done and served. The only 'care' our chef took here was omitting the part of the service where shrimp pieces are tossed. On top of this, the food was much greasier than even the average hibachi. Tons of butter - I also thought the way the chef dipped his used grill utensils into a huge vat of butter was unsanitary and likely against code. Everything tasted okay in the moment, but two of us got sick after - not sure if this was from the food safety or the sheer amount of butter and oil. Chicken was flavorful but dry. Steak was flavorful but tough. Veggies were very good. I enjoyed my hot saki and my wife enjoyed her Kirin. Soup and salad are served with the meal. I was surprised that the soup was a clear chicken broth and not miso as is traditional. It was very plain and flavorless. Overall, I would not recommend this place, despite there being fewer and fewer hibachi options around where you get the full grill experience.

I was aware of this spot for a while now after the old Foxfire grill closed but taking the time out to try it has been tricky. Well, what's a better time than 30 minutes before closing time to just pop in and grab a couple of bowls then! It's cold, it's night, it's ramen time! We stumble in grab some shoyu, miso, seaweek salad, takoyaki, karaage, and tiramisu at the end. This place feels like a Japanese version of a Pho shop. Clean restaurant and clean bathrooms. Service was good, straigh forward, skip all the pleasantries. No Bars here but there is a connected space where you can get matcha drinks and boba but its matcha. Everything was matcha. If you're into that stuff, then that's a matcha for you. Ramens were okay. Broth was blowing my mind in flavor. I would say the depth was not too deep but this will work for a cold night. Karaage was okay. Takoyaki lacked impact in flavor also, missing the oomf! Seaweed salad was good but I'm not gonna rave about seaweed salad. We wrapped things up with the tiramisu cake. Oh boy, that was a surprise. It fell flat. The layers were overcooked and had a tough bite. I expect tiramisu to have a tender bite to it. We didn't finish that slice of cake. Well, we left full but half fulfilled. Was it worth it? Not really. If you need ramen and cup o noodles isn't cutting it, this is an option. Then again, there are options.

Taiko has a huge menu, pretty much catering to anything you might hanker. I noticed that in addition to traditional Japanese fare, there were Chinese and Thai dishes as well. For starters we went with the shumai, miso soup and harumaki. The shumai was very good, though I'm a little less certain about the vinegary dipping sauce that came with the shumai. The miso soup was good and we liked the finely diced tofu in it. Harumaki are crispy spring rolls, and we liked these too. We also ordered an eel roll. It had been broiled and with the sauce on it was very tasty. JP's entrée was the Pork Katsu bento box. The pork katsu was excellent and so were the California rolls that came with the box. The bento box also came with miso soup and a side salad. My entrée was the Beef Udon. Very attractively presented, it had a smoky flavor and was packed with beef along with bits of asparagus and zucchini. It was pretty good. We were pleasantly surprised at the end of our meal to receive complementary scoops of a delicious vanilla ice cream. Considering the excellent service, big menu and good food, I'm going with five stars.
