I am very happy with the people and the services on this site. I feel like it's every Parent or Guardian's secret weapon in preparing their child's success with reading and math. With all the previous reviews, people would probably not want want to use their services, but trust me when I say that the parking lot is packed everytime I go. During this Pandemic, I feel very safe in bringing in my toddler because not only social distancing is practiced, masks with face shields are a must, partitions or clear plexiglass are placed, temperatures are taken everytime, sanitizers, and wipes are used constantly on the ready. read more

My kids have been here for 2 months. The two main teachers and the owner are kind, patient, diligent, dedicated and responsible! I was suspicious because bad reviews about the school. But my conclusion so far that they deserve 5 stars! read more

Be ware - the management of this Kumon center (Northwest) is the same as the Lincoln Park branch. Kumon is a franchise business, so each center is owned independently. My critique is about the management of this kumon center, not so much the work itself. This particular center suffered from an owner who seemed not to be well trained in customer service or creating a positive environment. CONFUSING, POORLY KEPT ENVIRONMENT: The environment where the kids learn must be kept quiet, but even upon entering, there is no signage or guidance on where to go or sit. I would sit in one area for several weeks, and then be told parents weren't allowed to sit there. Later there would be parents sitting there, and no one saying anything. Bathroom facilities were not well maintained or cleaned, and you got the feeling they just put in the bare minimum effort to keep the lights on and the doors locked. POSITIVITY: No one, and I mean no one is smiling in this place. Its a center for kids, and not one tutor, nor one child looks happy. Parents waiting are the same. I've been to other academic centers, and the culture of the management typically influences how the place feels. NO COMMUNICATION/ERROR IN ACCOUNTING: The Lincoln park branch closed and I did not receive any communication about it. The next thing I know there was supposed to be papers mailed to us, but none came. to this day the new promised center has still not opened. I therefore had to cancel my account due to lack of accessibility. After submitting the paperwork to the owner to cancel my account in March 2015, I was charged 3 subsequent months worth of tuition. I emailed and phoned the owner John Salceda, letting him know, with no response from him. One charge was reversed in May 2015, but the other two still have not been reversed. I finally called the Kumon 800 number and they are now looking into it. I don't believe in using Yelp to gripe or complain unduly, but I felt it was legitimate to let users know about this management. They seem inexperienced and ineffective. read more

This Kumon Center is under the same ownership of the Lincoln Park center that was located on N. Dayton. Unfortunately, the Lincoln Park center has closed effective December 15th 2014 and although we have been told that they will open another center nearby, concrete details and a firm date have yet to emerge. In the meantime families like ours, who live close to Lincoln Park will have to travel to Kedzie and Irving Park despite having signed up because of nearby location which now no longer exists. I am otherwise happy with Kumon but our center closing has been a disappointment. read more

For this review, I write just the facts. Read them and judge for yourself: 1. In February of 2018, we signed up three of our kids for Kumon classes at the Kedzie (both this location and the one in Lincoln Park/Lake View are owned by John Salceda.) At that time, we signed a contract. We were assured, however, that Kumon would only work with people who wanted their services and we could stop if the program wasn't working for our kids. 2. We felt our kids were not advancing in any way at all, and the expenses were substantial. Therefore, we asked to terminate classes. We sent a written e-mail asking to terminate classes on May 26th, 2018. 3. In response, we were told to come into the center in person to wrap up the paperwork. While we assumed this was just a "pitch" to get us to stay, we went to the center in person. During that meeting, we confirmed we wanted to terminate the sessions. 4. After our termination (now both in writing and in person), we did not receive any services or products of any sort or kind from Kumon. We did not receive any communications from anyone at Kumon, no one inquiring about why we were not attending classes (normally, they send out an e-mail saying "your student was absent" if the student misses a class - they never sent one of these during this time period), no one sending materials home to us. Of course this was to be expected, because we had terminated services. 5. Approximately five months later, near the end of October 2018, we came home from a trip to find a huge and heavy box outside our doorstep. Inside the box were dozens of Kumon booklets - the weekly sort they typically hand out at lessons. This was very puzzling - it was literally the first communication of any kind we had from Kumon since our termination. 6. We grew suspicious that Kumon was still charging our account despite our termination, and that this big box of booklets was some kind of attempt by Kumon to justify that ongoing charge. It is significant now to remember we were never told the services were not terminated. We were never contacted about classes, no inquiries of any kind were made, and we received no services or products of any kind for the five months between our termination and the landing of the box outside our doorstep. 7. We checked our bank accounts, and learned that Kumon had withdrawn thousands of dollars from our bank account, without our authority, and without telling us they were continuing to extract funds, despite the fact that we requested terminated and had not attended any classes. 8. We contacted Mr. Salceda and asked him to explain the issue. We were hopeful this was all a big mistake. 9. Through our communications with Mr. Salceda, it became clear this was no mistake at all. Kumon had refused to stop payments from our account. Mr. Salceda claimed the contract bound us for the time period they continued charging us. Despite our repeated requests that the unauthorized deductions be refunded, Mr. Salceda did not offer any refund whatsoever. Eventually, he told us he is referring the matter to his legal counsel. 10. Again, to be clear, it was never our understanding that our termination was "not effective" and that we would continue to get charged. If we believed that to be the case, at a minimum, we might have continued to show up for classes! We never went to another class because we believed the contract was terminated. They never called, never asked why we weren't coming, never sent homework home, never communicated with us in any way after our termination, until the big box (presumably comprising 5 months worth of back up work) landed on our doorstep. Mr. Salceda may fall back on his contract, but I do not believe that contracts that extract funds without providing any services in exchange are enforceable. In addition, the Kumon center did not communicate that our termination wasn't effective or that we were getting charged (and it isn't very unusual to go a few months without reconciling bank statements). Had we received notices that our students were absent from class (as would usually be the case), or told that our termination wasn't effective, or told that funds were still being withdrawn from our bank account, at a minimum, we could have used the services we were paying for. The point is, they withdrew the funds from our accounts without our knowledge and consent, and without offering any goods or services in exchange, and they did not tell us what they were doing. Then, five months later, they shipped a box full of useless papers to our door in an attempt to justify what was clearly intentional conduct. We feel misled. But most disturbing is that lots of the clientele here seem like they are a vulnerable population who may not have the means to fight back against such practices. Update.. I went to Kumon to try to break 2 year contract, John the manager gave me a hard time. I have a friend that went thru the same issue I'm having. Mr. John broke her contract and she told me that he would be compassionate about the my situation. Unfortnuily, my son is in special Ed and her daughter wasn't. I thought he would consider my situation due to the fact that my son has ADHD and the program is not for him and he's not challenge doing addition & subtraction for 6 months. I now have to bring my friend who he broke the contract for and now I have to get his special Ed teacher involve . Hopefully this will work. I can't afford to pay another 1year & half for wasted tutoring when I am paying for tutoring elsewhere to help him with what he is earning at school, which is algebra & geometry. By the time he would learn this at Kumon, he would be in high school. I will see John in 2 weeks with a letter from school. I will have an update in 2 weeks. Hopefully a lawyer won't have to be involve. read more
