I entered through the balcony eating area, which always seems to be full, went up to the counter and picked up a menu. I read through the dining options but in the back of my mind I always knew what I was going to eat. It had to be the Bento Box, that classic Japanese dish. An assortment of fine foods separated by barricades all inside a box. I looked around the classy joint as I awaited my order. Other people came in and picked up their pre-ordered meals. I wandered around and read newspapers that had been left on the various inside tables. Then finally, my food was ready. I picked up some chopsticks and a serviette and made my way home. I turned on the tele, I opened the box and I tucked in. Japanese food is always a little bit expensive, I find. But it is always good and I am seldom disappointed. This was no exception. Yummo. The only thing I noticed was that the wait staff seemed less attentive than they used to be. We sat down at our reserved balcony table, shortly after we noticed the table besides us had left. I think this was because of the meal although some of my friends suggested it was because of us - who knows. :P The remnants of their meals strewn across the table stayed there until we were about to leave. It was not like they were extremely busy either. To add to this we had to stand and wave our arms around in order to get the attention of the waitresses. They were lovely and polite etc, just didn't check on us or even see us attempting to get their attention more subtly. I left the food until last so I can end on a more positive note. AMAZING - AGAIN! We enjoyed the delights of soft-shell crab salad, sashimi/sushi plater and I never come to this place without ordering their baked salmon roll (DEVINE). The sushi/sashimi here is always fresh and delicious, soft shelled crab is great and you all know what I think of their Baked Salmon Roll! mmm We all left with full bellies but still heading for Bar Italia for a yummy gelato for dessert. To me, it's a very nice "iPad-order" place that does yummy high-quality Japanese. We punched in our orders into the iPads (which we a little too sensitive, but we worked around it). We ordered essentially 3 mains; Niku Yasai Itame Teishoku + Salmon Sashimi ($19.80 + $4.50) This is a fantastic dish with stir-fried meat & veggies in a very tasty (but not over powering) sauce. This is my wife's go-to dish at Yayoi. I would highly recommend ordering this. The table next to us ordered this too. Pork Loin Katsu-toji ($16.30) Pork Katsu in cooked egg in yum sweet/carmelised onion sauce. This is sooo good. I'm glad my wife asked for us to order this in addition to my Udon. I can't actually describe how well cooked the Katsu was. Normally "katsu" is a meh affair at Japanese restaurants, at Yayoi... it's really good. Wagyu Niku Udon ($15.50) I ordered this Udon because I was craving some udon goodness. The barely poached egg that comes on the side might put some off, but hey - it's on the side so you can either use it or lose it. I threw it in, waiting barely a minute for it cook a little in the hot broth, and then mixed it all up. Yum. PRO: - Delicious food - Very fast kitchen (we didn't have to wait much at all before food was out). - Attentive and friendly staff. CON: - new iPad was sensitive and ordering took longer than it should. - large tray can be problematic when ordering more than 2 main dishes on a small table. - Will likely become crowded once people know it's there (but that's good for business I suppose). That being said, we were not there during peak hours. But the food would have been worth waiting for! I ordered a couple pieces of tuna sushi and the spicy Korean fried chicken. I am incredibly picky when it comes to sushi, as raw fish can be tricky and sometimes feel rubbery - but the sushi here was so fresh and tender and flavorful. And this was actually the best Korean fried chicken I've ever had. It's my understanding that this restaurant is fairly new, but deserves publicity because it truly is fantastic!
